Chapter 5 - The Trap Inside Southgate

Grace did not go alone.
That was Daniel's condition.
Luke drove.
Michael followed.
When they reached the warehouse, Ethan's car was parked outside.
Grace entered through a side door and heard voices beyond stacked construction materials.
Lauren.
"You should've stayed home."
Ethan answered.
"You stole from my company."
"You really still think Walker Development is yours?"
Grace stopped.
Luke stood several feet behind her.
Lauren laughed.
"You were useful, Ethan. Ambitious men always are."
"Who is Vale?"
A third voice answered.
"Someone who understands what your wife is worth."
Richard Vale stepped from the shadows.
He was in his late fifties, silver-haired, immaculate.
Grace recognized him from childhood.
He had attended Mercer Christmas parties.
He had once given her a wooden chess set when she was twelve.
She felt sick.
Ethan said, "Grace has nothing to do with this."
"Grace has everything to do with this."
Vale placed documents on a table.
"You married Jonathan Mercer's daughter and never knew it. I almost admire that level of blindness."
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"Leave her out of it."
Lauren smiled.
"Now you're protective?"
Ethan looked at her with disgust.
Whatever illusion existed between them had died.
Vale continued.
"Southgate was supposed to fail after Mercer committed another eighty million to the adjoining corridor. Public scandal, investor panic, regulatory investigation. Daniel Mercer would spend months putting out fires."
"And you?"
"I buy distressed assets through intermediaries."
Ethan stared.
"You used me."
Lauren touched his sleeve.
"You weren't complaining when I was in your bed."
Ethan jerked away.
Grace closed her eyes.
Hearing it aloud hurt differently.
Then Vale said something worse.
"We need his signature."
"On what?"
"A confession."
Ethan laughed.
"No."
Vale's men emerged.
Two.
Large.
Grace felt Luke tense behind her.
Vale slid papers forward.
"You'll admit that you directed the transfers."
"And if I don't?"
"We release evidence of your affair, the fraudulent documents carrying your authorization, and enough financial records to make federal investigators very interested."
"My affair isn't a crime."
"No. But striking your pregnant wife might make the public less inclined to believe your innocence."
Ethan's face changed.
"How do you know that?"
Lauren smiled.
Grace understood.
Lauren had recorded the confrontation.
She had wanted Ethan to lose control.
The slap had been unexpected, perhaps, but useful.
Grace stepped into the light.
"Then your problem just became me."
Everyone turned.
Ethan went white.
"Grace?"
Lauren stared.
Vale smiled slowly.
"Little Gracie Mercer."
Luke entered behind her.
Then Michael.
Vale's smile disappeared.
Grace walked toward the table.
"You always underestimated women, Richard. Dad used to say it was your most expensive habit."
Vale's eyes hardened.
"You shouldn't be here."
"Neither should you."
She picked up the confession.
"You want Ethan to admit he authorized fraudulent transfers."
"He did."
"Some."
Grace studied the papers.
"But these three approvals were digitally executed while Ethan was speaking at a conference in Atlanta."
Lauren's face changed.
Grace continued.
"And this vendor invoice uses Walker Development's old tax registration number. The company updated it fourteen months ago."
Ethan stared at her.
"How did you see that?"
Grace didn't look at him.
"I helped file the original incorporation paperwork."
He went silent.
Vale's composure cracked.
"Take their phones."
One of his men moved.
Luke stepped forward.
"Try."
The man stopped.
Michael smiled faintly.
"I'd advise against it. Our security team is outside, and the entire conversation has been transmitted to two attorneys and one federal contact since Grace entered."
Vale stared at him.
Michael lifted his phone.
"Technology. Difficult stuff."
Grace almost smiled.
Sirens sounded in the distance.
Lauren panicked.
"You said nobody could trace this."
Vale turned on her.
"Shut up."
"You promised me immunity."
Ethan stared.
"Immunity?"
Lauren realized her mistake.
Grace looked between them.
"What did you do, Lauren?"
Lauren backed away.
Vale moved toward a rear exit.
Two officers entered.
Everything happened quickly.
Vale ran.
Luke moved Grace aside.
Police flooded the warehouse.
Lauren began crying before anyone touched her.
Ethan simply stood there.
When officers escorted Vale away, he looked directly at Grace.
"This isn't finished."
Daniel, who had arrived with security, stepped into his path.
"Yes, Richard. It is."
Outside, Grace breathed cold night air.
Ethan approached slowly.
"Grace."
Her brothers watched from several yards away.
She allowed him to come closer.
"I didn't know," Ethan said.
"About Vale?"
"About any of it."
"You knew about Lauren."
He lowered his eyes.
"Yes."
"Then don't hide one betrayal behind another."
He flinched.
"I'm sorry."
Grace looked at him.
There had been a time when those words could repair almost anything.
Not anymore.
"I loved you when nobody knew your name," she said. "And somewhere along the way, you started treating the person who loved you before success like she was embarrassing evidence of who you used to be."
"Grace—"
"I sold Grandma Evelyn's sapphire bracelet to make your payroll."
He stared.
"What?"
"Your first development. You were forty-eight hours from missing payroll."
"Blue Ridge covered—"
"That came later."
His face collapsed.
"I thought you didn't believe in the company."
"I believed in you before you did."
Ethan's eyes filled.
Grace continued softly.
"That's why what you did hurts so much."
He looked at her stomach.
"Can I...?"
His hand lifted slightly.
Grace stepped back.
"No."
He dropped it.
"I want to be part of the baby's life."
"Then become someone safe enough to be part of it."
It wasn't forgiveness.
It wasn't reconciliation.
It was a boundary.
Grace turned away.
Then an officer approached Michael.
"We found something in Vale's office."
He held out a sealed evidence sleeve containing several photographs.
Daniel took them.
His expression changed.
"What?"
Grace looked.
The photographs showed Jonathan Mercer—her father—meeting secretly with Richard Vale.
The dates were recent.
One had been taken only three weeks earlier.
Grace stared at her brothers.
May you like
Daniel looked equally stunned.
And suddenly, the conspiracy they thought they had uncovered became something far more personal.
