Chapter 2 - The Men at the Door

Ethan looked away first.
That hurt more than Grace expected.
Lauren did not.
She remained beside him with her fingers curled possessively around his sleeve, almost daring Grace to force the truth into the room.
"Understand what?" Grace repeated.
Ethan exhaled.
"Lauren and I have feelings for each other."
The sentence was painfully ordinary.
Five years of marriage, and he destroyed it with eleven words.
Grace's fingers tightened around the back of a dining chair.
"How long?"
"Grace—"
"How long?"
Lauren answered.
"Seven months."
Ethan snapped toward her. "Lauren."
"What?" She shrugged. "She asked."
Grace stared at him.
Seven months.
She began counting backward without meaning to.
Seven months ago Ethan had taken her to Charleston for her birthday.
Seven months ago he had kissed her forehead on a hotel balcony and promised that the hardest years were behind them.
Seven months ago they had begun trying for a baby again.
Her stomach turned.
"You were sleeping with her while we were trying to have a child?"
Ethan's face changed.
"What?"
Grace almost laughed.
Of all the things he could have heard, that was the one that frightened him.
She glanced toward the cream-colored box.
Ethan followed her gaze.
He reached for it.
Grace moved faster.
"Don't."
"What's in there?"
"It doesn't matter anymore."
Lauren's expression sharpened.
Ethan stepped toward Grace.
"Give it to me."
"No."
"Grace."
She picked up the box.
He grabbed her wrist.
"Let go."
"Stop acting dramatic."
"You're hurting me."
Lauren rolled her eyes.
"Oh, please."
Grace turned.
"Get out of my house."
Lauren laughed.
"You really think this is your house?"
Grace went still.
Ethan's expression warned Lauren to stop.
She didn't.
"Ethan told me everything. The house is in his name. The company is his. The accounts are his. You have no career, no position at Walker Development, and apparently no idea what's happening in your own marriage."
Grace looked at Ethan.
"Is that what you told her?"
He said nothing.
That silence answered enough.
Grace pointed toward the door.
"Leave."
Lauren stepped forward.
"Maybe you should leave."
Grace's voice dropped.
"Get out."
Lauren's smile vanished.
"You don't order me around."
"Then I'll call the police."
Lauren reached for the cream box.
Grace slapped her hand away.
Lauren gasped.
Ethan moved instantly.
His hand struck Grace across the face.
Silence.
Even Ethan seemed stunned.
Grace's head turned with the force.
Her hair fell across her cheek.
One hand covered the place he had hit.
The other protected her stomach.
Then something inside Grace became very quiet.
No pleading.
No screaming.
No bargaining.
She looked at the man she had loved since she was twenty-four and understood that the marriage she had been trying to save no longer existed.
"You hit me."
Ethan swallowed.
"You shouldn't have—"
Grace's eyes lifted.
"Finish that sentence."
He couldn't.
Lauren took a small step backward.
Then headlights swept across the front windows.
Not one vehicle.
Three.
Doors slammed outside.
Ethan frowned.
"What the hell?"
Grace knew.
For the first time that night, she breathed freely.
The doorbell did not ring.
The front door opened.
Three men entered.
The first was tall, broad-shouldered, and silver-eyed, wearing a charcoal suit beneath a dark overcoat.
Daniel.
At forty, the eldest Mercer brother rarely raised his voice because he had spent most of his adult life becoming the kind of man who didn't need to.
Behind him came Michael, thirty-seven, an attorney whose courtroom calm had dismantled executives, politicians, and corporations.
The youngest, Luke, thirty-four, wore no tie. He had driven fastest.
All three stopped when they saw Grace's face.
Luke's expression changed first.
"Who did that?"
Grace said nothing.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
The silence became dangerous.
Ethan straightened.
"Who are you?"
Luke actually laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because he could not believe the question.
Lauren whispered, "Ethan..."
Michael shut the front door.
"Grace," Daniel said gently, without taking his eyes off Ethan. "Did he hit you?"
Grace looked at her husband.
Five years of excuses rose inside her.
He's stressed.
He's under pressure.
He didn't mean it.
It was only once.
Then she remembered the promise.
If he ever makes you afraid to call us, the promise is over.
"Yes."
Luke surged forward.
Daniel caught his arm.
"No."
"He hit her."
"I heard her."
Daniel stepped toward Grace instead.
His entire face softened.
"Are you hurt anywhere else?"
"No."
"Do you want to stay here?"
Grace looked around the home she had decorated, cleaned, protected, and filled with memories.
"No."
Ethan scoffed nervously.
"This is ridiculous. Grace, tell your friends to leave."
Daniel slowly turned.
"Friends?"
Lauren had gone pale.
She knew something Ethan didn't.
Grace saw recognition in her eyes.
Lauren whispered, "Mercer."
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
Michael glanced at her.
"So somebody in this room does research."
Ethan looked from Grace to the three men.
"Mercer?"
Daniel removed his coat.
"Daniel Mercer."
The color drained from Ethan's face.
Everyone in Charlotte real estate knew Mercer Holdings.
It owned commercial property across six states, financed major developments throughout the Southeast, and controlled investment partnerships worth billions.
Ethan had spent three years trying to get into the same rooms as Daniel Mercer.
Michael stepped forward.
"Michael Mercer."
Luke gave Ethan a humorless smile.
"Luke."
Ethan looked at Grace.
"No."
Grace said nothing.
Daniel's voice was quiet.
"Our sister doesn't use our last name."
Ethan stared.
"Sister?"
Lauren backed into the dining table.
Daniel continued.
"Grace is Grace Mercer Walker."
The room fell silent.
Ethan's lips parted.
"That's impossible."
"No," Michael said. "What's impossible is that you married our sister for five years and never bothered to learn why she knew more about development finance than half your board."
Ethan looked at Grace as though seeing her for the first time.
Then his eyes moved to the cream box in her hand.
"What is that?"
Grace hesitated.
The box slipped slightly open.
The ultrasound photograph fell onto the floor.
Ethan stared at it.
Nobody moved.
His face emptied.
"Grace..."
She bent to retrieve it.
Daniel reached it first.
He looked at the image.
Then at his sister.
His eyes softened.
"You're pregnant?"
Grace nodded.
Ethan whispered, "That's my baby?"
Grace looked at the red mark his hand had left across her face.
Then she answered.
May you like
"Your child was in the room when you hit me."
And for the first time that night, Ethan Walker looked truly afraid.
