Chapter 7 - The True Architect

Vance stepped under the cabin’s porch roof, shaking the rain from his umbrella. His face was entirely devoid of emotion.
"Daniel, you should return to the car," Vance said quietly. "Let the adults resolve this."
"Excuse me?" Daniel’s voice cracked. "I am the CEO of Harrison Holdings! You work for me!"
"I work for the trust, Daniel. And the trust is Margaret Harrison," Vance replied, his tone chillingly dismissive. "Your mother has carried your incompetence for seven years. She allowed you to play the dashing young philanthropist while she managed the real debts your father left behind. But your reckless entanglement with Miss Cole and your inability to manage your own household have made you a liability."
Daniel looked like he had been struck with a physical blow. He staggered backward onto the wet porch steps. "My father left debts? What debts? We have thirty million in liquid assets!"
"You had thirty million ten years ago," Vanessa interjected from inside the cabin. "Before Margaret lost eighty million in the European commercial real estate crash. She used the foundation to mask the losses, Daniel. She made you sign the loan guarantees, and she put Amy's name on the shell transfers. If the ship goes down, you both go down with it. Margaret retains the core trust, protected by offshore indemnities."
Amy watched her husband crumble. The polished, untouchable Manhattan elite, the man who had towered over her life for nearly a decade, was nothing more than an ornamental figurehead in his mother's crumbling empire.
"This is insane," Daniel stammered, pulling at his wet collar. "My mother wouldn't sacrifice me. I'm her only son."
"Your mother values the Harrison name above any human being who bears it," Vance said bluntly. He turned his gaze to Amy. "Mrs. Harrison, I have an offer for you. Signed by Margaret ten minutes before my flight departed."
Vance opened his leather portfolio and withdrew a fresh legal agreement.
"Five million dollars, transferred immediately to an offshore account in your name. Full custody of the child, on one condition: you sign a complete non-disclosure agreement, relinquish all future claims against the estate, and agree to give birth under an assumed name in Switzerland. You will never set foot in the United States again."
Amy looked at the document. Five million dollars. Total freedom from the Harrisons. A life of comfort for her child, far away from the poison of Manhattan.
"And if I refuse?" Amy asked.
Vance snapped the folder shut. "If you refuse, the wire fraud evidence will be delivered to the Southern District of New York at 9:00 AM tomorrow. You will be arrested before you can check into an obstetrician."
Amy looked from Vance to Daniel, who sat on the wet stairs with his head in his hands, completely broken.
Then she looked at Vanessa. Vanessa gave her a slow, barely perceptible nod.

"Give me the pen," Amy said.
