Chapter 6 - The Broken Heir

Amy didn't cower. The fear that had lived in her chest for months evaporated, burned away by pure, cold clarity. She gathered the forged documents from the counter, slipped them into her coat, and walked straight to the door.

She unlocked the deadbolt and pulled it open.

Daniel stood on the threshold, chest heaving, rain dripping from his chin. Vance stood two paces behind him, holding an umbrella and a leather folder.

Daniel looked past her and saw Vanessa standing in the kitchen. His eyes flared with a mixture of betrayal and fury. "Vanessa? What the hell are you doing here?"

"Saving your wife from your mother, Daniel," Vanessa said coldly. "Something you were too cowardly to do."

"Shut your mouth!" Daniel stepped into the cabin, but Amy blocked his path with a rigid arm against his chest.

"You don't take another step into this house," Amy said. Her voice wasn't loud, but the steel behind it stopped Daniel cold. "You brought your lawyer to my family's cabin, Daniel? To do what? Force me to sign a confession?"

Daniel looked down at her arm, then into her eyes. "Amy, listen to me. Things are out of control. My mother... she went to the board tonight. She told them you took three million dollars from the foundation's reserve accounts before you left New York."

"And you believed her?"

Daniel swallowed. "There are wire transfers with your electronic signature, Amy! The records are right here!" He gestured toward Vance. "I came here to protect you. If you come back with me right now, we can handle this privately. We announce the pregnancy, we claim it was an accounting misunderstanding, and we keep the federal prosecutors out of our lives."

Amy looked at him with profound pity. "You still think this is about saving our marriage."

"It *is* about saving our marriage!"

"No, Daniel," Amy said, pulling the documents Vanessa had brought from inside her coat. She thrust them directly into his wet chest. "It's about saving your skin. You forged my name on Cayman shell companies while I was lying in a hospital bed losing our first child."

Daniel looked down at the documents. His face shifted from anger to sheer, unadulterated panic.

"Where did you get these?" he whispered.

"From your PR director," Amy said. "The woman you trusted to bury your secrets. Did you really think you could turn me into your fall guy, Daniel? Did you really think I'd raise your child behind bars while you inherited your mother's empire?"

Daniel spun around to face Vance. "Vance, what is this? You told me these transfers were sealed!"

Vance didn't flinch. The old lawyer calmly adjusted his glasses. "Daniel, your mother gave very specific instructions regarding the contingency protocol. You were never meant to review those specific documents."

Daniel took a step back, his eyes widening. "Contingency protocol? What are you talking about?"

May you like

"Your mother didn't send Vance to help you bring me home, Daniel," Amy said softly, watching the reality finally dawn on her husband. "She sent him to make sure neither of us ever speaks to the press again."
