Chapter 5 - VANESSA’S SECRET

Roman read the message three times.

Then he put the laptop down.

Miles watched him carefully.

“Say something.”

Roman’s voice was flat.

“Find her.”

This time, the words carried no panic.

Only betrayal.

The recovered messages told a story neither man had expected.

Vanessa had contacted Gabriel months earlier.

At first, the messages sounded like complaints.

Roman no longer visited as often.

Roman spent holidays with Amelia.

Roman was going to become a father.

Then resentment became something darker.

Vanessa believed Anthony Marino’s sacrifice had created a permanent bond between Roman and the Marino family.

Gabriel encouraged it.

He owes us everything.

Vanessa replied:

Then why does she get everything?

But the kidnapping had not been Vanessa’s idea.

According to the messages, Gabriel suggested staging an emergency to remind Roman of his promise.

Vanessa agreed to be frightened.

Not hurt.

Amelia was never supposed to be taken.

At least, that was what Vanessa claimed in her final messages.

Gabriel had changed the plan.

He had turned a cruel emotional test into a real kidnapping.

And now Vanessa had vanished because she knew too much.

Roman drove to St. Michaels himself.

Again, he stopped outside Evelyn’s property.

This time Amelia came to him.

“You found something.”

Roman handed her printed copies.

She read them silently.

When she reached Vanessa’s line—why does she get everything?—her expression barely changed.

Roman wished she would shout.

Instead she handed the papers back.

“She wanted you.”

“Yes.”

“And you never knew?”

“No.”

Amelia looked at him for a long moment.

“I did.”

Roman frowned.

“What?”

“Every woman knows when another woman is waiting for her husband to become available.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I did.”

Roman opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

He remembered.

A dinner eighteen months earlier.

Amelia saying Vanessa called too often.

Roman answering, Her father died for me.

A Christmas party.

Amelia asking why Vanessa had a key to their townhouse.

Roman answering, She’s family.

Their anniversary.

Vanessa had called at midnight because her car would not start.

Roman had left.

Amelia had said, She has roadside assistance, Roman.

He had accused her of jealousy.

Now he felt sick.

“You told me.”

“Yes.”

“And I dismissed you.”

“Yes.”

Roman looked toward the water.

“I’m sorry.”

Amelia studied him.

“You’ve been saying that a lot.”

“I have a lot to be sorry for.”

“That doesn’t mean apologies fix it.”

“I know.”

For once, Roman did not defend himself.

That mattered more than Amelia wanted it to.

His phone rang.

Miles.

Roman answered.

“We found Vanessa.”

“Where?”

“Federal Hill.”

“Alive?”

A pause.

“Barely.”

Roman turned away.

Amelia watched his shoulders stiffen.

Then he asked the question that surprised her.

“Is an ambulance there?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“You coming?”

Roman looked at Amelia.

“No.”

Miles went silent.

Roman continued.

“Have security stay with her. Call me when she’s stable.”

He ended the call.

Amelia stared at him.

“You’re not going?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because doctors are with her.”

“That never stopped you before.”

“No.”

“Then what changed?”

Roman’s gaze settled on her stomach.

“I finally understand that saving someone doesn’t always require abandoning someone else.”

Amelia looked away.

It would have been easier if he had learned nothing.

Vanessa survived.

Gabriel had apparently held her in an apartment for nearly thirty hours, demanding access codes to accounts Anthony had created years earlier.

Those accounts contained something Gabriel wanted badly enough to kill for.

A ledger.

Not money.

Names.

Payments.

Police officers.

Judges.

Businessmen.

People Anthony Marino had bribed during the most violent years of his organization.

Roman had never known the ledger existed.

Vanessa had inherited the encryption key without realizing what it unlocked.

Gabriel had spent eight years trying to recover it.

The kidnapping had served two purposes.

Manipulate Roman.

And obtain the key.

But Gabriel had made one mistake.

He believed Vanessa possessed the ledger.

She didn’t.

Anthony had hidden it with someone else.

Evelyn.

When Roman told his aunt, she became very quiet.

“I wondered when this would come back.”

Amelia stared.

“You knew Anthony?”

“Better than Roman realizes.”

Evelyn disappeared upstairs.

She returned carrying an old cedar box.

Inside was a photograph of Anthony Marino standing beside a much younger Evelyn.

And a brass key.

Roman looked stunned.

“What is that?”

“The reason Anthony really died.”

Evelyn sat.

“Your version of that night is wrong.”

Roman’s face hardened.

“He took a bullet meant for me.”

“Yes.”

“He made me promise to protect Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“Then what am I missing?”

Evelyn looked at Amelia.

“Anthony wasn’t trying to save Roman from an assassin.”

She placed the key on the table.

“He was trying to get Roman out.”

“Out of what?”

“The organization.”

Roman went completely still.

Evelyn continued.

“Anthony knew Gabriel was planning to turn you into your father.”

Roman’s jaw tightened.

“He died preventing it.”

The room fell silent.

Then Evelyn looked directly at him.

“His final promise wasn’t supposed to become your prison.”

Roman whispered, “He said take care of Vanessa.”

“Yes.”

“He made me swear.”

“He also told me something else before he died.”

Roman stared.

Evelyn’s voice softened.

“He said, ‘Make sure the boy learns that protecting someone and belonging to them are not the same thing.’”

Roman sat down.

For eleven years, guilt had shaped every decision involving Vanessa.

Now the foundation beneath that guilt cracked.

Amelia saw something disappear from her husband’s face.

Not love.

Not grief.

A chain.

Roman looked at her.

“I chose a dead man’s words over my living family.”

Amelia said nothing.

Then Evelyn’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed immediately.

“What?”

Roman stood.

Evelyn slowly lowered the phone.

“That was the hospital.”

“Vanessa?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

She looked at Amelia.

“Your obstetrician.”

Amelia went pale.

“What happened?”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Someone broke into her office last night.”

Roman’s expression hardened.

“What did they take?”

May you like

Evelyn looked directly at Amelia.

“Your complete medical file.”
