Chapter 6 - THE MAN WHO CAUSED THE CRASH DIDN’T MEAN TO KILL ISABELLA, WHICH MADE HIS EXCUSE EVEN WORSEMarcus Sloan did not say, “I killed her.”

He said:
“I was trying to stop her.”
Nia hated the sentence immediately.
So did Adrian.
“Explain.”
Marcus looked at table.
“Isabella had copied identities from relocation fund.”
“She didn’t know what they were.”
“She thought they were shell beneficiaries.”
“If she handed everything to board, seven protected families became visible.”
“My name.”
“Other witnesses.”
“Children.”
“I begged Margaret to get drive back.”
“She refused.”
“Then?”
“Julian told me Isabella was going to meet you after gala.”
“So I sent a message.”
“To Isabella?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“That Evan was sick.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“You used my seven-year-old son.”
“Yes.”
The pattern.
Children becoming leverage.
“Isabella left immediately.”
“Caroline was with her.”
“I didn’t know.”
“That’s a lie.”
“I swear.”
Adrian almost lunged.
Nia did not touch him.
He stopped himself.
Marcus continued:
“I had access to remote fleet-control prototype because Vale Protective Services funded it.”
“I intended to place her car into safety mode.”
“Slow it.”
“Force stop.”
“Then get drive.”
“What happened?”
“System malfunctioned.”
“At curve, braking pressure dropped instead.”
“The car went through barrier.”
Silence.
“You called ambulance?”
Marcus looked down.
“No.”
Nia closed eyes.
Of course.
Why?
“If police traced command, relocation network exposed.”
“So you left my wife and daughter in ravine.”
“Yes.”
Adrian stood.
Agents moved.
He raised hand.
Not attacking.
Just needed distance.
Marcus cried.
“I didn’t intend—”
Adrian turned.
“Stop.”
That word cracked.
“You used my child to manipulate my wife.”
“You altered her car.”
“You watched it crash.”
“You chose secrecy over calling for help.”
“Do not tell me what you intended.”
Marcus lowered head.
Good.
Marcus then admitted telling Alan afterward.
Alan moved Isabella to private clinic to contain scandal and protect relocation network.
Alan did not know Marcus caused crash until hours later.
When he learned, he still did not call police.
Why?
Fear of exposing Vale organization and witnesses.
Everyone chose secrecy.
Different motives.
Same result.
Isabella died asking for Adrian.
Caroline died immediately.
Then why Isabella had sedative? Alan ordered to keep her from leaving/communicating.
Criminally horrific.
But he later preserved ledgers? Maybe.
Marcus also confessed Rachel nanny’s fall.
He did not push her.
Who?
Margaret.
Everyone froze.
Margaret had denied.
Marcus said Rachel confronted Margaret with phone.
Threatened to tell Adrian.
Margaret grabbed wrist.
Rachel pulled away.
Lost balance.
Fell.
Not deliberate push perhaps.
Margaret then threatened boys afterward to silence them.
So Margaret’s protection story partly false.
She had caused harm and rationalized.
Charges.
Adrian listened.
All adults around sons had weaponized “protecting family.”
Nia asked:
“Why are you telling now?”
Marcus looked at her.
“Because they sent me your sister.”
She froze.
“What?”
Someone had emailed him Jasmine’s hospital information with order:
Finish what you failed to do four years ago. Remove Carter before Vale understands.
Marcus refused.
“Who sent?”
Encrypted.
But payment offer came from account connected to—
Vale Children’s Foundation.
Again.
Marcus was culprit of crash.
But current threat came from someone else.
Another layer.
Who still had foundation account access?
Adrian.
Daniel Pierce.
Foundation CFO Graham Vale—Adrian’s cousin?
Let's introduce Graham Mercer? Better avoid too many relatives. Use Daniel Pierce security chief and Cassandra trustee. Also board finance director Elaine Porter not established. Need final antagonist surprising but seeded maybe Daniel. Could be Daniel himself.
Daniel had known about Isabella.
Hidden brake evidence.
Met her privately.
Controlled security now.
Could be current actor trying to bury Marcus because his own old role?
What old role?
Perhaps Daniel supplied Marcus remote key unknowingly then later discovered, covered it because he had been diverting foundation money to off-book security ops. He now fears exposure will implicate him in federal crimes. He frames others, targets Nia to prevent boys talking. Could be final villain, but emotional betrayal strong.
Let's uncover.
Digital trace from message to Marcus bounced through Vale Security disaster-recovery server.
Daniel controlled.
He denied.
Server could be compromised.
Again.
Nia asked:
“Who designed disaster-recovery server?”
Daniel answered:
“I did.”
“Who knows hidden authentication?”
“Three people.”
“Names?”
“Me.”
“Adrian.”
“And my deputy, Stephen Cole.”
Adrian frowned.
“Stephen left two years ago.”
“Exactly.”
Where?
Retired after wife died.
Now runs private firm.
Could be. But user wants final twist maybe not endlessly new names. Better final villain is Stephen, who had been involved four years, then left. But less emotional.
Maybe final is Daniel, but with nuance: current attacker is Daniel's son? Hmm.
Let's keep Daniel as suspect and then reveal final mastermind is Adrian's father via posthumous plan? But dead can't current threaten unless loyal executor.
Could be Margaret's son, Stephen Sloan, using system? no.
Let's perhaps make current antagonist Cassandra, but we cleared with gala. She could still orchestrate via remote accounts and wants inheritance. Yet she inherited half Alan estate, maybe if boys die? No need Nia.
Nia is current danger because uncovering old crimes that could void Cassandra inheritance due illegal cover-up. That is motive. She shaped narrative letters, tried to keep Adrian blaming Isabella. She could have hired current surveillance. More emotionally plausible.
But why threat Jasmine through Marcus? She knew Marcus secret from Alan. Yes.
So Cassandra final antagonist. We can reveal in next chapter with financial trace.
Meanwhile sweet dynamics.
Nia's sister surgery funding: Adrian should not simply buy her loyalty. He can offer perhaps loan? Nia refuses condition. Later employee emergency grant? Better Nia job compensation 72h includes enough deposit? She needs surgery. Adrian offers to pay, she refuses if tied. He arranges independent hospital charitable foundation matching? That could feel manipulative. Better Adrian asks what she wants. She wants salary advance with written repayment? He agrees. Nice.
Let's continue.
During night after Marcus confession, Nia packs.
Adrian sees.
“You’re leaving.”
“My seventy-two hours end tomorrow.”
His face changes.
“We need you.”
Nia looks.
“Your boys need stability.”
“Yes.”
“That's not same as needing me.”
He swallows.
“Do you want to stay?”
Nia considers.
Jasmine surgery.
Boys.
Danger.
Her own life.
“I’ll stay thirty days.”
Adrian surprised.
“Why?”
“Because Luke slept through night.”
“Because Evan told me about Caroline.”
“Because Caleb apologized for calling me poor.”
“He apologized?”
“Technically he said, ‘Being poor doesn’t make you completely useless.’”
Adrian almost laughed.
“And Noah asked if I could come to school meeting.”
She looks.
“But I stay under conditions.”
“Name them.”
“No cameras in children’s bedrooms.”
“There aren’t.”
“No monitoring my personal calls.”
“Yes.”
“My sister is never leverage.”
“Never.”
“I handle discipline during my hours unless immediate safety.”
He struggles.
“Yes.”
“And you stop disappearing when boys act badly.”
“What?”
“You work sixteen-hour days because this house hurts.”
He stared.
“That is not your business.”
“It is when four children decide broken lamps are easiest way to make you enter room.”
Silence.
She had noticed.
Every major outburst summoned Adrian.
The boys had learned destruction produced father.
Adrian sat.
“I don’t know how to do this.”
There.
First honest vulnerability.
Nia softened.
“Good.”
He frowned.
“Why do people keep saying that?”
“Because pretending is what got this family here.”
Sweet.
Then he asks salary. She says original rate + overtime. He offers triple hazard. She says double. They negotiate. No charity.
Sister surgery. Adrian asks:
“How much is short?”
“No.”
“Nia.”
“No gifts.”
“What would be acceptable?”
She thinks.
“Salary advance. Written. No interest. Repayment from checks capped 10%.”
Adrian stares.
“That's ridiculous.”
“Then no.”
“Fine.”
This shows respect.
That night he signs loan paperwork drafted by independent HR.
No conditions.
Jasmine surgery scheduled.
Nia cries privately.
Adrian finds her kitchen.
Doesn't assume.
“Good news?”
“Yes.”
He says:
“Can I hug you?”
She looks startled.
Then says:
“No.”
He nods.
She smiles through tears.
“Not yet.”

Tiny romantic beat.
Then major twist: police trace message to Marcus payment account to Cassandra's charitable trust.
