Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN ADRIAN’S FATHER MARRIED AFTER ISABELLA’S DEATH HAD BEEN WEARING HER JEWELRY BEFORE THE FUNERALCassandra lived in Palm Beach.

She returned to Connecticut only after subpoena.
She walked into interview wearing cream Chanel and expression of a woman offended that evidence required her participation.
Nia watched remotely with Adrian.
Cassandra was forty-six.
Beautiful.
Controlled.
Not frightened.
Adrian looked at her with open disgust.
“You hated her.”
Cassandra smiled faintly.
“I envied Isabella.”
“That is not same.”
“No.”
“Did you have affair with my father before she died?”
Cassandra hesitated.
There.
“Yes.”
Adrian closed eyes.
Alan Vale had cheated while publicly mourning daughter-in-law?
Wait Isabella is Adrian's wife, Alan father-in-law? No Alan is Adrian's father. So affair with his assistant Cassandra while his son’s wife alive—not directly infidelity to Isabella, but Alan was maybe married? Adrian's mother perhaps dead. If widower, not scandal. Could still be relationship. Better Cassandra was Alan's executive assistant and had been in relationship before Isabella died, hidden due workplace. Fine.
“Did Isabella know?”
“Yes.”
“Did she care?”
“No.”
Interesting.
Cassandra said Isabella actually liked her initially.
They worked together on foundation accounts.
Then discovered missing funds.
Cassandra blamed Julian.
Isabella did not.
They argued.
“What about letters saying Isabella wanted to leave me?”
Cassandra’s face changed.
“They were real.”
“Prove it.”
Handwriting analysts found genuine handwriting but pages altered.
Original sentences cut and recombined? Forensic paper shows copied print? Let's make they were drafts created from Isabella’s actual journal scans with manipulated text.
So false.
Cassandra admitted:
“Your father gave them to me.”
“I believed.”
Maybe.
Then jewelry.
Nia had seen photo files from Isabella.
One charity gala image: sapphire bracelet.
After death, Cassandra photographed wearing same bracelet.
Adrian noticed.
“That was Isabella’s.”
Cassandra looked down.
“Your father gave it to me.”
“When?”
“Before funeral.”
Adrian stood.
Nia touched his forearm.
He stopped.
Cassandra whispered:
“I didn’t know it was hers.”
Could be.
Alan was monstrous controlling narrative.
But did Cassandra trigger brakes?
Network logs showed her assistant terminal active at 9:41.
She claimed she had left computer unlocked.
Who else in mansion?
Margaret.
Staff.
Alan’s driver.
And Evan Vale? Adrian's son, age seven then maybe could accidentally? no.
Then digital investigators found USB command required physical security key.
Registered to Alan Vale.
Father.
So Alan likely ordered brake reduction remotely.
But Alan was at gala.
Could access via phone? Key cloned? Yet registered to him.
Maybe father did it.
Why would father hurt daughter-in-law and granddaughter?
Foundation scandal.
She was going to expose criminal money.
Alan prioritized empire.
A familiar grim answer.
Adrian looked destroyed but almost relieved to have clarity.
Then Cassandra said:
“Your father didn’t activate it.”
Everyone stopped.
“How know?”
“He gave me his physical key at gala.”
“Why?”
“He asked me to take it home because he was drunk.”
“Where was it?”
“In my purse.”
“At mansion?”
“No.”
“You were at gala?”
“Yes until ten.”
Wait then Cassandra couldn't be at mansion. Network terminal activity was remote clone.
Another false lead.
Cassandra produced gala photos proving.
So neither Alan nor Cassandra physically at estate.
Key possibly cloned earlier.
Who had access to Alan’s key?
Security chief Daniel.
Executive assistant Cassandra.
His son Julian.
Margaret sometimes? no.
Then Cassandra finally explained why she and Alan married after Isabella.
Not romance after tragedy.
They were already secretly married? Maybe too much.
Better Alan became dependent and proposed; Cassandra accepted for security/money. She also had knowledge.
She confessed Alan pressured her to keep foundation secrets.
She did.
Inherited money conditioned on NDA.
She regretted but remained silent.
No murder.
Then financial forensic finding:
Foundation theft was not eight million.
Twenty-six million.
Money routed through boys’ names returned into Vale Protective Services.
Company owned by Daniel Pierce.
Adrian stared at security chief.
Daniel did not deny company ownership.
“It’s not what you think.”
Money funded covert relocation program for witnesses and families targeted by old Vale criminal rivals.
Adrian had ordered similar activities? Perhaps father and Julian created.
Why through boys?
Because trusts received lower scrutiny.
Illegal laundering even if used for protective ends.
Isabella discovered.
She thought theft.
Julian tried explain.
Alan wanted silence because exposure would reveal protected witnesses.
So perhaps father delayed Isabella partly because he feared those people endangered.
Not purely greed.
Complex.
Then who wanted Isabella dead?
Someone whose identity protected by program.
A man Isabella might expose inadvertently.
One relocated witness:
Marcus Sloan.
Margaret Sloan’s husband.
Officially dead fifteen years.
Actually alive under protection.
Margaret’s connection.
He had been a Vale enforcer who testified secretly against rival crew.
If foundation audit public, his identity could surface.
Would Margaret kill Isabella to protect husband?
She denied.
But motive.
Where is Marcus?
Unknown even to Margaret? She received messages through attorney.
Then Rachel S. note from Isabella—Rachel S. maybe not nanny Rachel, but Rachel Sloan, Margaret’s daughter.
Ah.
Isabella note said ask Rachel S. about basement ledgers.
Margaret has a daughter Rachel Sloan, now 32.
Nia realized.
Not nanny Rachel.
They had assumed wrong Rachel.
Another twist.
Rachel Sloan lived in Albany.
When contacted, she panicked.
She had not spoken to mother in three years.
Why?
“My mother told me Dad was dead.”
“When did you learn?”
“Isabella told me.”
There.
Isabella had found Marcus alive.
Rachel confronted mother.
Margaret admitted.
Family fractured.
Rachel helped Isabella copy ledger.
“What was Isabella trying to do?”
“Not expose Dad.”
“She wanted to restructure foundation legally.”
“She wanted Adrian to know.”
“So why did she die?”
Rachel went quiet.
“Because Dad came back.”
Silence.
Marcus Sloan secretly returned to Greenwich night of crash.
Why?
He thought Isabella would expose him and other witnesses.
He confronted Margaret.
Then Isabella.
Did he activate brakes?
Rachel did not know.
But she had voice message from father:
If Isabella goes to Adrian, everything we did was for nothing. I’ll stop her before she ruins all of us.
Strong.
Marcus might still be alive.
Police traced old protection payments.
Last withdrawal six months ago in Vermont.
They found cabin.
Empty.
Fresh.
Someone had recently left.
On wall, photographs.
Adrian.
Boys.
Nia.
Nia froze.
Her own picture from first day at estate.
Someone had been watching.
Why her?
Because boys told her.
She had reopened secrets.
Then they found newspaper clipping of her sister.
JASMINE CARTER FUNDRAISER SEEKS $180,000 FOR CARDIAC SURGERY.
Nia’s blood turned cold.
Her vulnerable reason for staying.
Next to clipping handwritten:
72 HOURS. SHE’LL LEAVE LIKE THE OTHERS. IF NOT, USE THE SISTER.
Adrian read it.
Something murderous entered his face.
Nia stepped directly in front.
“No.”
“He threatened Jasmine.”
“Yes.”
“I will—”
“No.”
His voice shook.
“Nia.”
“You told me your sons aren’t bad. They’re angry.”
“What does that have to do with this?”
“So are you.”
“And anger is not instruction.”
He stared.
Then slowly nodded.
Police protection for Jasmine.
Officially.
Nia called sister.
Did not hide.
Jasmine cried.
“You need to quit.”
Nia almost said yes.
Then remembered four boys.
No.
“I need to make sure this ends.”
Jasmine said:
“You don’t have to save everybody.”
Important.
Nia whispered:
“I know.”
She stayed not from martyrdom.
From choice.
That evening boys discovered threat existed.
Evan heard.
He confronted Nia.
“You should leave.”
“Do you want me to?”
“Yes.”
Liar.
“Why?”
“Because people get hurt.”
There.
Nia crouched.
“Listen to me.”
“You did not hurt Rachel.”
“You did not hurt your mom.”
“You do not make adults dangerous by caring about them.”
Evan began crying.
“But everybody leaves.”
Nia’s chest broke.
“I might leave someday.”
He flinched.
She continued:
“But I will tell you.”
“I won’t disappear to teach you a lesson.”
“And if I leave, it won’t mean you destroyed me.”
He cried harder.
Adrian stood in doorway listening.
No interruption.
Later that night, Nia found a blanket outside guest-room door.
No note.
She asked boys next morning.
Nobody admitted.
Adrian said quietly:
“Luke.”
Sweet.
Luke had noticed she slept cold.
Tiny trust.
Then investigation found Marcus Sloan.
Not police.
He called Adrian.
“I need to talk.”
“Where?”
“Not over phone.”
“No private meetings.”
Marcus laughed.
“You finally learned.”
Meeting arranged through federal agents.
Marcus arrived sixty-eight.
Thin.
Tired.
He confessed:
“I was at your estate that night.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Did you kill Isabella?”
“No.”
“Did you touch her brakes?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Marcus looked at him.
“Your son.”
Silence.
Nia felt ice.
Adrian’s oldest, Evan, had been seven.
Impossible intentionally.
Marcus explained:
“The remote key was in study.”
“Evan was playing.”
“He pressed activation.”
No.
Too accidental and cruel.
But logs maybe one command button? Could a child remotely reduce brakes? Implausible because authentication. Better Marcus says Evan took key but someone used his fingerprint? Hmm.
Let's pivot: not Evan himself, but his nanny at time used Evan as cover? Marcus says "your son" maybe account. Yet he means your father called the security token 'Evan'? No.
Better: "Your son was the reason." He didn't say actor. Let's correct:
Marcus said:
“Your son was the reason Isabella’s brakes were triggered.”
Adrian stared.
“What does that mean?”
“Someone told her Evan had been taken.”
A false emergency message.
Isabella left route and drove fast toward estate.
Remote system activated later to slow car? It malfunctioned.
Marcus says plan was not to kill.
They wanted stop her before hospital? Hmm.
Let's make Margaret and Marcus devised scare to recover ledger: they sent message that Evan was sick at estate, then Marcus remotely engaged vehicle safety-limiter intending force car to stop, but defective system locked brakes unpredictably on wet curve. Caroline in car. So not murder intended but reckless.
But who commanded? Marcus.
May you like
This makes him responsible. He says "Your son was the reason" because used false message about Evan. Powerful.
Let's proceed next chapter.
