Chapter 6 - THE SECRET HER FATHER LEFT BEHIND

Maya spent the night in Daniel’s penthouse.
Not because either of them wanted to acknowledge the intimacy of the arrangement, but because his building had private security, controlled elevators, and enough surveillance to make an unnoticed entry nearly impossible.
Ethan received the guest bedroom.
Maya took the library.
Daniel insisted on sleeping on the couch outside.
At 3:00 a.m., Maya found him awake.
“You own twenty rooms.”
“Fourteen.”
“You're sleeping on a couch.”
“You're counting rooms while somebody is trying to steal a dangerous algorithm.”
“It helps me relax.”
Daniel handed her tea.
She sat opposite him.
For several minutes, neither spoke.
Then Maya asked the question she had been avoiding.
“Why did you become like that?”
“Like what?”
“The man at the restaurant.”
Daniel looked toward the windows.
“My father believed brilliance excused cruelty.”
“That doesn't answer my question.”
“I spent my entire childhood trying to impress him.”
Daniel explained that Arthur Sterling had demanded perfection. Second place was failure. Emotion was weakness. Employees existed to produce results.
Daniel had hated it.
Then, after his father died, he slowly became the same kind of leader.
“The night I met you,” he said, “I was terrified.”
Maya blinked.
“You looked furious.”
“That was easier.”
“Than being scared?”
“Yes.”
Daniel met her eyes.
“And I took it out on someone I thought couldn't hurt me back.”
Maya said nothing.
“I’m sorry.”
There was no press.
No audience.
No hundred-million-dollar check.
That made the apology matter.
Maya nodded.
“Thank you.”
The next morning they decoded Samuel Carter’s clue.
The piano exercises corresponded to frequency intervals.
Those intervals produced a sixteen-part mathematical sequence.
But instead of unlocking Orpheus, the sequence opened another encrypted file.
A video appeared.
Arthur Sterling and Samuel Carter sat together in a laboratory.
Both men looked exhausted.
Samuel spoke first.
“If you're watching this, someone restarted Orpheus.”
Arthur continued.
“Do not activate the complete system.”
They explained the truth.
Orpheus wasn't worth hundreds of millions.
Properly implemented, it could be worth tens of billions.
Its predictive technology could transform power consumption worldwide.
But the original version was unsafe.
Samuel had designed a replacement architecture shortly before his death.
The design had never been completed.
Maya stared at the equations behind her father.
She understood them.
Not completely.
But enough.
“He wasn't hiding the key to Orpheus,” she whispered.
Daniel understood.
“He was hiding the key to replacing it.”
Maya spent twelve hours reconstructing Samuel’s unfinished architecture.
Daniel stayed beside her.
At midnight, she found the solution.
The dangerous centralized control system could be divided into independent verification nodes.
No single person could manipulate the network.
Orpheus could finally become what their fathers had intended.
Then security called.
Marcus had been found.
Alive.
He had escaped from an abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn.
At the hospital, Marcus identified the person behind the operation.
Victor Lang.
Sterling’s vice chairman.
Arthur Sterling’s oldest business partner.
Daniel looked stunned.
Victor had known Daniel since childhood.
“He was practically family.”
Marcus shook his head.
“He believed Arthur betrayed him by shutting Orpheus down.”
Victor had quietly built a position inside Vantage Dynamics while remaining on Sterling’s board.
The failed demonstration had been deliberate.
Victor wanted Sterling’s valuation to collapse before Vantage acquired it.
Then he would own Orpheus.
But Maya’s intervention destroyed the plan.
Now Victor needed Samuel Carter’s safeguard.
Police moved to arrest him.
Too late.
Victor had vanished.
The following morning, Sterling’s board called an emergency meeting.
Daniel expected support.
Instead, Victor appeared by video.
He calmly accused Daniel of gross negligence, concealing dangerous technology, and allowing an unqualified waitress access to proprietary systems.
Several board members sided with him.
Daniel was temporarily suspended as CEO pending investigation.
Security escorted Daniel from his own building.
Outside, hundreds of reporters waited.
One shouted:
“Mr. Sterling, did Maya Carter manipulate you into giving her access?”
Daniel stopped.
Maya expected him to keep walking.
Instead, he turned toward the cameras.
“No.”
The crowd quieted.
“I underestimated Maya Carter because of the uniform she wore. That was my mistake.”
Maya stared at him.
Daniel continued.
“She earned every room she entered after that.”
Then he walked away.
Maya followed.
As the cameras flashed around them, Daniel whispered:
“I may have just lost my company.”
Maya looked at him.
“No.”
May you like
She opened her laptop.
“We're going to take it back.”
