Chapter 9 - THE LAST ORDER

Thomas Vale had spent fifteen years building an empire from the ruins of his brother's death.
And Adrian had unknowingly helped him.
The revelation arrived in pieces.
Financial records.
Hidden ownership documents.
Testimony from Catherine.
A photograph recovered from Saint Brigid.
Thomas had been the unseen investor behind several of Adrian's legitimate businesses.
He had used intermediaries to finance warehouses, freight contracts, and construction projects.
Every time Adrian expanded, Thomas gained another route through which to move money.
Adrian sat in his study as Detective Ortiz explained the evidence.
"So I've been funding him."
"Indirectly," she answered.
"For years."
"Yes."
Adrian looked at the financial statements.
His hands curled into fists.
Emma stood beside the window.
She had watched him struggle with rage for the past hour.
But the rage wasn't what frightened her.
It was the shame.
Adrian had spent his adult life trying to prove he was different from his father.
Now he was discovering how deeply the family's crimes had shaped his success.
"I should have known," he said.
Emma turned.
"You didn't."
"I signed the contracts."
"You signed contracts that were deliberately designed to deceive you."
"People got hurt."
"Then help them."
He looked up.
Emma crossed the room.
"Don't waste the truth by turning it into another reason to hate yourself."
Adrian stared at her.
"What am I supposed to do?"
"Something your father never did."
"What's that?"
"Take responsibility without making everyone else pay for it."
The words struck him harder than any accusation.
He looked down.
Then nodded.
By evening, Adrian had given federal investigators access to his companies' records and placed the implicated accounts under independent review.
He also established a fund to compensate victims of the fraudulent operations.
It wouldn't erase the harm.
But it was a beginning.
George Kessler agreed to cooperate after prosecutors confronted him with evidence of kidnapping, conspiracy, and attempted murder.
His testimony revealed that Thomas had ordered Owen Lawson's death.
He had also arranged the attack at the Kingsley garage.
Vincent Vale had discovered his younger brother was stealing from the family.
The brothers argued.
Catherine threatened to expose both of them.
Thomas decided to eliminate everyone who could testify.
But something went wrong.
Adrian survived.
Catherine disappeared into captivity.
And Thomas used the chaos to erase himself.
For fifteen years, he watched from the shadows.
Now the shadows were disappearing.
At eleven that night, Adrian received a call.
Unknown number.
He answered.
"Hello?"
A man's voice spoke.
"Hello, nephew."
Adrian stood.
"Thomas."
A soft laugh.
"I see Catherine finally told you."
"Where are you?"
"Close enough."
Adrian glanced toward the security cameras.
"You're finished."
"Am I?"
Thomas sounded amused.
"You think giving a few files to the police makes you innocent?"
"I never said I was innocent."
"Good. Because your father wasn't either."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"What do you want?"
"One final conversation."
"Then come to the police station."
Thomas laughed again.
"Still trying to be the good son."
Adrian's voice turned cold.
"My father is dead."
"Yes."
A pause.
"And tonight, you'll finally understand why."
The call ended.
Seconds later, an alarm sounded downstairs.
Marco shouted through the hallway.
"Security breach!"
Adrian moved toward the door.
Emma caught his arm.
"Don't."
He looked at her.
"Stay here."
"No."
A loud crash echoed through the mansion.
Then gunfire.
Marco shouted again.
"Boss! Get down!"
Adrian pushed Emma behind the desk.
A bullet shattered the study window.
Glass rained across the floor.
Adrian grabbed Emma and pulled her toward the interior wall.
Another shot struck the doorframe.
He twisted to shield her.
A burning pain tore through his side.
He fell against the leather chair.
Emma screamed his name.
Blood spread across his white shirt.
Outside, security guards exchanged gunfire with intruders.
Emma pressed both hands against the wound.
"Stay with me."
Adrian looked at her.
His breathing was shallow.
His eyes filled with something she had never seen before.
Not fear of dying.
Fear of being alone.
"Emma."
"I'm here."
He reached for her.
"Can you hug me for two minutes?"
Her heart broke.
She wrapped her arms around him.
And as his forehead fell against her shoulder, she whispered the words her father had spoken fifteen years earlier.
"Stay with me for two minutes, kid. Just give me two minutes."
Adrian froze.
Then lifted his head.
And Emma finally told him everything about Owen Lawson.
But before he could answer, Marco appeared in the doorway.
His face was pale.
"Boss."
Adrian looked up.
"What?"
Marco swallowed.
"We caught one of the attackers."
"Who sent him?"
Marco hesitated.
Then said the words no one expected.
"He says Thomas Vale didn't order the attack."
Emma stared.
"Then who did?"
May you like
Marco looked directly at Adrian.
"Your father."
