Chapter 8 - THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE

Robert Mercer had not died.

He had disappeared.

The death certificate belonged to a man whose remains had been misidentified after a warehouse fire.

Someone had used the mistake to erase Mercer's existence.

And Detective Lena Ortiz had unknowingly spent six years mourning a man who was still alive.

She took the discovery personally.

By the next morning, she had assembled a task force.

Financial investigators traced payments from George Kessler's companies to Saint Brigid Recovery Center.

Surveillance teams followed Kessler's known associates.

And Emma returned to work.

Not because she needed the money.

Because she refused to let fear decide where she belonged.

Adrian hated the idea.

"You could stay somewhere safe."

Emma looked at him across the kitchen island in his lakefront mansion.

"Safety isn't a place, Adrian."

He raised an eyebrow.

"That's philosophical for seven in the morning."

"It's practical."

She poured coffee.

"If I hide every time someone threatens me, they'll own the rest of my life."

Adrian watched her.

There was something about Emma that unsettled him.

She was frightened.

He knew she was.

But she refused to let fear make her cruel.

He had spent years believing cruelty was the only language dangerous people understood.

Now he was beginning to question that belief.

"Your father would be proud of you," he said.

Emma's expression softened.

"Don't use him to win an argument."

"I'm not."

"Good."

She slid a mug toward him.

"Because you'd lose."

He smiled.

A real smile this time.

For a few seconds, the darkness surrounding them felt far away.

Then Marco entered.

"Boss. We have a problem."

Adrian looked up.

"What?"

"George Kessler emptied his accounts."

"How much?"

"Almost eighteen million."

Adrian stood.

"Where did it go?"

"Offshore."

Emma set down her coffee.

"He's running."

Marco shook his head.

"That's what we thought."

He placed a photograph on the counter.

George Kessler stood outside a private airfield.

Beside him was a woman wearing a dark coat and sunglasses.

Emma leaned closer.

Her breath caught.

"Catherine."

Adrian stared.

His mother.

Alive.

Standing beside the man who had helped destroy their family.

He reached for his phone.

Ortiz answered immediately.

"We found her," he said.

"Where?"

"At a private airfield outside Aurora."

Ortiz went silent.

Then spoke sharply.

"Do not approach them."

"That's my mother."

"And Kessler may be armed."

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

Catherine's posture was strange.

Her shoulders were tense.

One hand gripped her coat.

The other rested against George's arm.

Then Emma noticed something.

"Zoom in."

Marco enlarged the image.

Catherine's fingers were pressed against George's sleeve.

Three fingers extended.

Two curled inward.

Emma frowned.

"She's making a signal."

Adrian looked at her.

"What signal?"

Emma thought back to childhood.

Owen had taught her simple hand signals used by emergency responders when speaking wasn't possible.

Three fingers.

Then two.

A pattern.

"Help," she whispered.

Adrian's expression changed.

"She's asking for help."

The task force moved quickly.

Police intercepted the vehicle before it reached the runway.

George Kessler was arrested.

Catherine Vale was taken to a hospital.

And for the first time in fifteen years, Adrian saw his mother.

She lay beneath a white blanket, her hair streaked with gray.

When he entered, she turned toward him.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Catherine whispered, "My boy."

Adrian crossed the room.

He fell to his knees beside the bed.

She touched his face.

He closed his eyes.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

He shook his head.

"No."

"I tried to come home."

"I know."

Tears slid down his cheeks.

"I know now."

Emma stood in the doorway.

Catherine looked past Adrian.

Her eyes widened.

"Emma?"

Emma froze.

The older woman began crying.

"My little girl."

Emma approached slowly.

For twenty-eight years, she had imagined what it might feel like to meet the woman who gave birth to her.

She had imagined anger.

Questions.

Rejection.

Instead, Catherine reached for her hand.

Emma took it.

And something inside her finally broke.

"Why didn't you come for me?"

Catherine sobbed.

"Because they told me you were dead."

Emma stared.

"What?"

Catherine looked toward Adrian.

"Robert Mercer told me Owen Lawson's family had been killed."

Adrian stood.

"Mercer?"

Catherine nodded.

"He kept me locked away. He said he'd kill you both if I tried to escape."

Emma's voice trembled.

"Where is he now?"

Catherine's face changed.

Fear returned.

"Adrian."

He leaned closer.

"What?"

"Robert Mercer isn't his real name."

The room went silent.

Catherine swallowed.

"His real name is Thomas Vale."

Adrian stared.

"Thomas?"

May you like

She nodded.

"Your father's younger brother."
