Chapter 9 - The Family Secret

Gabriel survived the surgery.

The bullet had missed his vital organs, but the doctors warned that his recovery would take time.

Clara spent the night beside his hospital bed.

Virgilio remained outside, speaking with investigators and arranging security.

Victor had finally been taken into custody. Matteo had provided a detailed statement, including evidence that Victor had manipulated the organization for years.

But one question remained.

What had Virgilio's father known about Clara's birth?

He contacted an elderly former family attorney named Richard Lawson.

Richard initially refused to speak.

Then Virgilio mentioned Gabriel Reyes.

There was a long silence.

"Your father left a sealed document," Richard finally said. "I was instructed to deliver it only if the truth became necessary."

Virgilio met him the following morning.

The document contained a birth certificate, a hospital record, and a letter written by his father.

Virgilio opened the letter.

If you are reading this, the people I trusted have probably turned against each other. There is one thing I should have told you before I died.

The letter explained that years earlier, Virgilio's father had discovered that a woman connected to his organization had given birth to a child whose identity needed to remain secret.

The woman was Elena Reyes.

Clara's mother.

But the document did not identify the child's father.

Instead, it revealed that Gabriel had been paid to raise the child as his own while keeping the biological connection hidden.

Virgilio read the final paragraph.

I made a promise to protect that child. I failed to keep it. If you ever meet her, do not make the same mistake.

He stared at the document.

There was no proof that Clara was related to his family.

But there was enough to make him question everything.

When he returned to the hospital, Clara was waiting outside Gabriel's room.

"What did you find?"

He handed her the letter.

She read it slowly.

Her face changed with every line.

"My mother never told me."

"Maybe she wanted you to have a normal life."

"Normal?" Clara laughed bitterly. "I spent eight years running from people who wanted to collect my father's debt."

Virgilio looked down.

"I know."

She handed the letter back.

"Do you think your father was my biological father?"

"I don't know."

"Do you want me to be?"

The question caught him off guard.

He looked at her for a long moment.

"I want you to know the truth. Whatever it is."

That afternoon, Gabriel was strong enough to speak.

Clara sat beside him.

"Tell me everything."

Gabriel took her hand.

"Your mother and I loved each other. I raised you as my daughter because you were my daughter in every way that mattered."

"Who was my biological father?"

Gabriel looked toward the door.

Virgilio entered.

For several seconds, Gabriel said nothing.

Then he whispered a name.

"Giovanni Marcelo."

Virgilio stopped breathing.

Giovanni was his father.

Clara looked at him.

The room seemed to tilt.

"You're saying we're related?"

Gabriel nodded.

"Your mother and Giovanni had a relationship before she married me. He knew about you. He wanted to take responsibility, but his enemies were already watching the family."

Clara's eyes filled.

"Why didn't he tell me?"

"Because he believed keeping you away from his world was the only way to save you."

Virgilio looked toward the window.

His father had hidden a daughter from him.

A sister he had never known.

And someone had used her as a weapon against him.

"Does Matteo know?" he asked.

Gabriel nodded.

"He helped your father keep the secret."

Virgilio turned toward the hospital door.

"Then why did Victor know?"

Gabriel swallowed.

"Because Victor was the one who arranged the payments. He knew the truth from the beginning."

Clara looked at Virgilio.

"What does this mean for us?"

Virgilio took her hand carefully.

"It means you're family."

For the first time since the attack at El Puente, Clara began to cry without trying to hide it.

But before either could speak again, Virgilio's phone rang.

It was Richard Lawson.

"There's another document," the attorney said urgently. "Your father left instructions that it must never be opened unless Clara was found."

"Where is it?"

"In a private vault."

"What's inside?"

Richard hesitated.

"An original photograph. And a letter from your father."

Virgilio closed his eyes.

"What does the letter say?"

May you like

Richard's voice dropped.

"It says Clara wasn't the only child Giovanni Marcelo kept hidden."
