Chapter 7 - The Truth Inside the Locker

The bank was located in a quiet Texas town, far from the streets where Clara had grown up.

She hadn't returned in years.

As their car approached the building, she recognized the old courthouse and the grocery store where her mother used to buy fresh bread.

Memories came rushing back.

Virgilio noticed her hands trembling.

"You don't have to do this."

"Yes, I do."

They entered with Daniel and presented the documents.

The bank manager led them into a secure room.

Inside the locker was a metal box containing photographs, a videotape, several letters, and a thick ledger.

Clara picked up the first photograph.

It showed her father standing beside Virgilio's father.

The second showed Victor Salazar shaking hands with a man Clara didn't recognize.

The third photograph made her knees weaken.

Her father was standing outside a hospital.

Beside him was a young woman wearing a nursing uniform.

Isabella.

Clara turned toward Virgilio.

"They knew each other."

He studied the photograph.

"Apparently."

The letters revealed that Gabriel had helped Isabella escape after the attack. He had arranged medical assistance and provided false information to the people searching for her.

He had also been gathering evidence against Victor.

Virgilio found a handwritten note addressed to him.

If you are reading this, then I failed to deliver the truth while I was alive. Your father believed loyalty could be bought. Victor believed fear could replace loyalty. Neither understood that the people they hurt would eventually become their greatest weakness.

Virgilio read the letter twice.

Then Clara found a small envelope with her name.

Inside was a photograph of herself as a little girl, sitting on her father's shoulders.

A handwritten message followed.

Clara, I never stopped looking for you. I left because staying would have put you in danger. If you are old enough to read this, please know that your mother and I loved you more than anything.

She pressed the letter against her chest.

For years, she had believed her father had abandoned her.

Now she had proof that he had tried to save her.

Daniel examined the videotape.

"We need to watch this somewhere secure."

They returned to a nearby office and played it.

Gabriel appeared on screen, thinner than Clara remembered him, with tired eyes and a bruised cheek.

"If this recording reaches my daughter, I want her to know that none of this was her fault."

He explained that Victor had planned to take control of Virgilio's organization by arranging the assassination of his father and manipulating the aftermath.

Gabriel had discovered the plan too late.

He also revealed that Victor had ordered the attack on Isabella, hoping Virgilio would retaliate against the wrong people.

The final section of the recording was addressed directly to Virgilio.

"Your father wasn't killed because of a failed deal. Victor arranged it. And the man who pulled the trigger was someone you trusted."

The screen went black.

Virgilio stood without moving.

"Who?" Clara whispered.

Daniel rewound the recording.

The image returned.

Gabriel spoke one final sentence.

"The man who killed your father was standing beside you when you inherited the organization."

Clara looked at Virgilio.

"Matteo."

He shook his head.

"No."

But the evidence was becoming difficult to ignore.

Then the bank manager knocked.

"Mr. Marcelo, someone is asking for you."

Virgilio turned.

"Who?"

The manager opened the door.

A man stood in the hallway.

He was older, thinner, and had gray hair at his temples.

Clara recognized him from the photographs.

The man took one step forward.

"Clara?"

She stared at him.

Her lips parted.

"Papa?"

Gabriel Reyes looked at his daughter with tears in his eyes.

"I've been trying to find you for eight years."

Clara ran into his arms.

For a few seconds, neither spoke.

Then Virgilio noticed something.

Gabriel wasn't alone.

A second man had entered the building.

May you like

Victor Salazar.

And he was holding a gun.
