Chapter 8 - The Second Gala

Three months after the Blackstone humiliation, Holloway House held its annual foundation dinner.

Brett assumed it would be canceled.

Audrey moved it to the same ballroom.

Same chandeliers.

Same stage.

Same front table.

But this time, the program read:

HOLLOWAY HOUSE HOSPITALITY

Founded by Audrey Finch Holloway & Brett Holloway

Audrey could have erased Brett.

She didn't.

Truth did not require rewriting history.

Brett had helped build the restaurants.

He had also nearly destroyed them.

Both things could be true.

He arrived under subpoena, not invitation.

The board had scheduled a shareholder meeting immediately before the charity dinner.

Graham Vale came with three attorneys.

Elias Mercer came alone.

Sierra entered quietly and sat near the back.

Micah wore the same tuxedo.

“Please don't have another flash drive,” Audrey whispered.

Micah grinned.

“No promises.”

“Micah.”

“Kidding.”

The meeting began.

Graham proposed that Vantage purchase Holloway House debt at a discount.

Audrey declined.

Then he threatened foreclosure.

Elias finally spoke.

“You can't foreclose on debt you don't own.”

Graham smiled.

“We acquired the senior position yesterday.”

“No,” Elias said.

“You attempted to.”

Arthur distributed documents.

The lender had rejected Vantage’s purchase after discovering material misrepresentations connected to Brett’s collateral.

Instead, another party had purchased the loan.

Graham looked at Audrey.

“You?”

“No.”

Elias raised one hand.

“Me.”

Graham's face tightened.

Elias continued.

“And I have refinanced it under terms approved by Mrs. Holloway.”

Brett slammed his palm against the table.

“This is insane.”

Audrey looked at him.

“No. This is what happens when people read documents before signing them.”

Then Sierra testified.

Emails.

Recordings.

Messages.

Finally, Brett’s written attempt to exchange Micah’s custody for Audrey’s Mercer shares.

Even Graham's attorneys stopped taking notes.

Brett whispered, “Sierra.”

She looked at him.

“You told me Audrey was weak.”

A pause.

“You confused kindness with permission.”

Audrey felt Opal in that sentence.

The board voted.

Brett was terminated permanently.

Audrey was confirmed as chair.

Vantage’s acquisition agreement was declared unenforceable pending litigation and fraud review.

Graham left without speaking.

Brett remained seated.

For the first time in Audrey’s memory, nobody waited for him.

No assistant.

No driver.

No employee.

No mistress.

Just Brett.

When Audrey passed him, he whispered:

“Was any of it real to you?”

She stopped.

The question stunned her.

“You're asking me?”

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

His eyes lifted.

“You don't believe me?”

“I believe you loved how I made your life possible.”

He flinched.

Audrey continued.

“And maybe somewhere inside that, you loved me too. But love without respect becomes possession.”

She walked away.

That evening the ballroom filled again.

Audrey stood backstage, suddenly terrified.

“I can't do this.”

Micah appeared beside her.

“Yes, you can.”

“There are five hundred people out there.”

“You fed five hundred people at the Christmas opening three years ago when the catering company canceled.”

“That was different.”

“You also threatened a fish supplier with a lobster.”

“I did not threaten him.”

“You held it aggressively.”

Audrey laughed.

The stage manager signaled.

Micah squeezed her hand.

“Watch me?”

Audrey shook her head.

“No.”

She squeezed back.

“Watch us.”

They walked onto the stage together.

The applause rose.

This time Audrey did not hide from it.

But halfway through the dinner, Arthur approached.

His expression was grave.

“What happened?”

“Graham disappeared.”

Audrey frowned.

“With what?”

Arthur handed her a photocopy.

One page was missing from Opal’s ledger.

The page identifying a dormant account containing proceeds from a property sale twenty-two years earlier.

May you like

Thirty-two million dollars.

And Graham had apparently spent twenty years looking for it.
