Chapter 5 - Opal’s Real Fortune

Audrey read the sentence three times.

Micah leaned over her shoulder.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

The ledger explained.

Opal Finch had never been merely a baker.

In the 1980s, after her husband died, she had begun buying neglected commercial properties around Midwestern downtown districts.

Cheap storefronts.

Old warehouses.

Half-empty buildings.

She repaired them slowly, rented them conservatively and almost never sold.

By the time Audrey was born, Opal controlled a portfolio worth several million dollars.

But that was still not the secret.

Inside the compartment was a second corporate ledger.

Finch Grain & Property Cooperative.

Audrey called Arthur.

There was silence after she read the name.

“You found it.”

“You knew?”

“I knew it existed. I didn't know where Opal kept the controlling documents.”

“What is it?”

“Something Brett has been trying to find for nine years.”

Audrey's stomach dropped.

Nine years.

Before Sierra.

Before their marriage began visibly collapsing.

Perhaps even before Micah started school.

Arthur explained.

Finch Grain owned minority interests in multiple properties on which Holloway House restaurants operated.

More importantly, it owned the land beneath the company’s two most profitable locations.

Brett had never owned them.

The supposed landlord?

A holding company controlled by Opal’s trust.

Audrey sat on the bakery floor.

“So he has been paying rent to…”

“You.”

Micah blinked.

“Mom owns Dad’s restaurants?”

“Technically,” Arthur said through the phone, “your mother owns substantial portions of the property under them.”

Micah smiled.

Audrey didn't.

Something bothered her.

“If Brett knew about Finch Grain, why didn't he tell me?”

Arthur was silent.

“Arthur?”

“Because I believe Brett has been trying to acquire it.”

The photograph inside the compartment suddenly mattered.

Audrey picked it up.

Opal stood beside a much younger man.

Audrey recognized him.

Graham Vale.

The Vantage Meridian executive.

On the back, Opal had written:

Never let this man near Audrey’s inheritance.

The betrayal expanded.

This wasn't only Brett.

Audrey returned to Chicago the next morning and called an emergency board meeting.

Brett arrived smiling.

He had regained his composure.

He expected Audrey to accuse him of adultery.

Instead, she distributed forensic accounting reports.

His smile disappeared.

“We have discovered seventeen unauthorized transfers,” Audrey said.

Board members shifted.

“Three undisclosed loans.”

Brett stared at her.

“Two falsified ownership schedules.”

His attorney whispered something.

“And an attempted sale to Vantage Meridian.”

That caused the room to erupt.

Brett stood.

“This is defamatory.”

Audrey slid a document across the table.

“Is that your signature?”

Silence.

“Brett?”

His lawyer touched his sleeve.

He sat.

Audrey continued.

“Under the Finch trust agreement, my voting rights activated when you attempted to transfer protected assets.”

She looked around the table.

“I am exercising them.”

Brett stared at her.

“You don't know how to run this company.”

Audrey almost smiled.

“I've been running it since before you learned which fork goes beside the salad plate.”

The vote followed.

Brett Holloway was suspended as CEO pending investigation.

Audrey became interim chair.

But Graham Vale had prepared for that possibility.

Before the meeting ended, every board member’s phone buzzed.

Vantage Meridian had filed suit.

They claimed rights to acquire the company based on an agreement Brett had already signed.

Worse, the company’s primary lender demanded immediate review of its loans.

If certain representations proved fraudulent, millions could become due.

Brett smiled again.

“You remove me,” he whispered, “and everything collapses.”

Audrey looked at him.

“You built the trap that way.”

“I built the company.”

“No.”

Audrey placed Opal’s ledger on the table.

“My grandmother did.”

Brett’s face changed.

For the first time, genuine panic appeared.

“Where did you get that?”

There.

Audrey had her answer.

He knew exactly what the ledger was.

Brett lunged for it.

Arthur pulled it away.

And Micah, seated quietly in the corner, suddenly spoke.

“Mom.”

Audrey turned.

Her son was looking at Brett.

Not angrily.

Sadly.

“Ask him about Grandpa.”

Brett froze.

Audrey frowned.

“My father?”

Micah nodded.

“I found emails.”

Audrey stared at her husband.

Her father, Thomas Finch, had supposedly disappeared from Opal’s business affairs after a catastrophic falling-out twenty years earlier.

Audrey had been told he wanted nothing to do with them.

Micah swallowed.

“Dad has been talking to him.”

“How long?”

Micah looked down at the printed emails.

“Eight years.”

May you like

Audrey slowly turned toward Brett.

And realized the affair with Sierra might be the smallest betrayal in the room.
