Chapter 4 - THE GHOST IN THE ROOM

The silence in the shattered glass house was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic crashing of the waves outside. Maya stared at me, the iron poker trembling in her pale hands. The little boy peered up at me, his dark eyes—Richard’s eyes—wide with confusion.
"My name is Eleanor Vale," I said softly, keeping my hands visible and non-threatening. "I am Richard's wife. And I am very much alive."
Maya gasped, stumbling back a step. The poker slipped from her grip, clattering loudly against the hardwood floor. "No," she whispered. "No, that's impossible. He showed me the death certificate. He cried in my arms over your grave."
A cold, sickening dread washed over me. A forged death certificate. A fake grave. The lengths Richard had gone to construct this parallel life were sociopathic.
"I'm sorry," I said, my voice steady despite the earthquake in my chest. "He lied to both of us."
I looked at the little boy. "What's his name?"
"Leo," Maya said, her voice hollow. She pulled the child closer. "He's six. Richard said... he said once the debts were cleared, we could finally get married. He said he was protecting us."
I took a slow breath. Maya wasn't a mistress in the way Vanessa was. Vanessa was a co-conspirator in Richard's corporate vanity. Maya was a victim. A hostage kept in the dark, manipulated by a man who used my supposed death to play the tragic hero.
"Maya, why were the FBI here?" I asked gently. "You mentioned loan sharks."
Tears spilled down her cheeks. "Men have been calling. Threatening us. Richard said they were coming to collect your debts. Tonight, the door was kicked in. They took boxes from his office upstairs. They weren't police, Eleanor. They wore suits, but they didn't have badges."
My blood ran cold. The flashing lights outside had been local police responding to a break-in, not a federal raid. Mara had been wrong. Someone else was hunting Richard.
Before I could speak, my phone buzzed. It was Mara.
"Eleanor, get out of there," Mara's voice was frantic. "I just got into the encrypted ledger. Richard isn't just embezzling. He's been borrowing against the company's stock from the Volkov syndicate. He owes them eight million dollars, and they just figured out the collateral is worthless."
A loud crunch of gravel outside made me freeze. Headlights swept across the glass walls of the house.
"Someone's here," I whispered to Mara, hanging up.
I grabbed Maya's arm. "We have to hide. Now."
Maya scooped up Leo, and we ran toward the back of the house, slipping into a dark walk-in closet just as the front door was kicked open again. Heavy footsteps echoed through the hallway.

Through the slats of the closet door, I saw a man enter the bedroom. It wasn't a Russian enforcer.
It was Richard, holding a silver handgun.
