Chapter 2 - THE DECLINED CARD

“I’m sorry, Mr. Vale. It seems there’s an issue.”

The sommelier’s voice was a discrete murmur, but in the sudden lull of the string quartet, it carried.

Richard stopped mid-laugh. He stared at the leather presenter holding his sleek, titanium black card. “Run it again,” he snapped, the charming facade slipping for a fraction of a second. “The machine is obviously malfunctioning.”

I stepped out from behind the velvet curtains. The room was a sea of glittering gowns and tailored suits, but my eyes were locked on my husband.

The sommelier ran it again. The machine emitted a sharp, flat beep.

“Declined, sir,” the man whispered, beads of sweat forming on his brow. The crowd of fifty guests shifted uncomfortably. Martin, who had just been roaring at the joke about me, suddenly found his shoes fascinating.

“This is absurd,” Richard hissed, digging into his jacket for his personal platinum card. He threw it on the silver tray. “Run that. And fire whoever handles your merchant services.”

I walked slowly across the marble floor. My heels made a sharp, rhythmic clicking sound that turned heads. I wore a simple navy silk dress, one Richard had once called ‘too matronly for a CEO’s wife.’

The machine beeped again. Declined.

Vanessa stepped forward, her hand sliding down Richard’s arm. “Darling, don’t stress. Let me put it on the corporate account for tonight. We’ll sort out the bank error tomorrow.” She produced a sleek green corporate card, throwing me a look of pure, condescending pity as she noticed me approaching. “Oh, Eleanor. You made it. We were just saying you might have gotten lost.”

“I know exactly where I am, Vanessa,” I said softly.

The machine beeped a third time. Loud. Unforgiving.

The sommelier looked terrified. “Miss Price… this one is declined as well.”

Vanessa’s perfectly glossed lips parted in shock. “That’s impossible. That account has a six-figure limit.”

“It did,” I corrected her. I reached the table and picked up Vanessa’s card, snapping it cleanly in half between my fingers. The sound cracked like a whip in the silent room. “But as of 8:59 PM, Vale Meridian’s assets have been frozen pending a full forensic audit. And Richard’s personal accounts, which are tied to my holding company, have been suspended.”

Richard’s face drained of color. The arrogant sneer vanished, replaced by a hollow panic. “Eleanor, what have you done? Are you insane?”

“I’m the steady hand on the wheel,” I said, placing the small silver box containing the vintage compass on the tray next to his useless credit cards. “Happy fiftieth, Richard. Try to find your way home.”

I turned to walk away, the crowd parting for me like the Red Sea. But just as I reached the doors, Vanessa’s phone buzzed loudly in the silence. She looked at the screen, and all the color left her face. She looked up at Richard, her eyes wide with terror.

“Richard,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Why is the FBI at our beach house?”
