Chapter 6 - THE TRIAL OF CLAWS

The Great Courtyard was surrounded by thousands of pack members. Torches hissed against the freezing mountain winds, throwing dancing shadows over the tiered stone bleachers. The scent of bloodlust, anticipation, and fear hung thick in the sub-zero air.

The full moon hung high in the sky like a polished silver shield.

At the center of the courtyard sat the fighting pit—a circle of crushed gravel sixty paces wide, bounded by heavy iron chains and marked with the blood of ancient champions.

Beta Darien stood inside the perimeter. He was stripped to the waist, his broad torso covered in war scars, his hands coated in ceremonial resin and crushed pumice to give his grip extra traction. He wore no armor. A smug, vicious grin stretched across his thin lips. He had arrived under the white flag of judicial challenge, accompanied by three dozen rogue mercenaries who stood at the gate under temporary immunity granted by pack tradition.

"Where is the girl?" Darien’s voice bellowed across the arena, amplified by his Beta tone. "Or has our noble King decided to hide the little cripple behind his skirts? If she does not answer the call before the moon reaches its zenith, her bloodline is forfeit, her mother's lands pass to the council, and the crown stands in violation of ancestral law!"

Murmurs rippled through the spectators. The elders looked uneasy. By law, if a challenger was not answered, the royal court lost its moral authority over the province.

"I will take her place," Kale’s voice rang out from the royal balcony.

The King leaped from the stone balustrade, dropping twenty feet without hesitation, landing in the center of the ring with a heavy crash that sent gravel scattering against the chains. He stood tall, dark, and terrifying, his golden eyes fixed on Darien with lethal intent.

"The challenge was issued to the house of Selene," Darien sneered, crossing his scarred arms. "Under pack law, a blood feud between sire and offspring cannot be intercepted by an Alpha unless the Alpha has taken her as a claimed, marked mate before the sacred fire. Have you marked her, Sire? Have you bedded the unshifted whelp?"

The crowd held its collective breath.

Kale’s jaw hardened. He could lie and claim the bond, but ancient magic governed the pit; any false claim before the full moon would invalidate the trial and invite divine retribution. Laria was not marked. He had respected her boundaries, waiting for her soul to mend.

"She does not fight," Kale said, stepping forward, his claws extending from his fingertips with a sickening shhk. "I will execute you myself for high treason."

"Then you are a tyrant, King Kale!" Darien shouted to the stands, playing to the crowd with seasoned political theatrics. "Look upon your ruler! He tramples upon the laws of the First Wolves to protect an empty vessel!"

"I answer the call."

The soft, clear voice sliced through the roaring wind like a silver blade.

At the edge of the courtyard, the crowd parted.

Laria walked through the ranks of armored warriors. She was dressed in a sleeveless white tunic of raw linen, bound at the waist with a simple leather cord. Her long black hair was braided back, exposing her elegant neck and the fierce determination etched into her features. She looked small against the towering warriors, but she walked with an upright, majestic posture that made the rowdiest mercenaries fall silent.

Kale spun around, his face draining of color. "Laria, no! Step back!"

"I cannot, Sire," she said calmly, entering the iron chain perimeter. "For eight years, I hid behind closed doors, hoping someone would save me. You kicked down that door. But this fight belongs to me."

Darien threw back his head and laughed, a mocking, echoing sound that scraped like rusted metal. "Look at you! You can barely hold a kitchen knife! You think because the King gave you some soup and soft words, your pathetic excuse for a wolf can stand against me?"

"You poisoned me because you were afraid of what I would become," Laria replied, her voice steady, carrying clearly to every member of the council. "Look at me, father. Look at what you spent eight years trying to kill."

Darien’s smile vanished, replaced by an ugly snarl. "I will tear your throat out and end your mother’s cursed line once and for all."

Elder Judith stood at the edge of the pit, her hands trembling as she struck the ceremonial brass gong.

BONG.

"The Trial of Claws has begun!" the elder cried. "No outside interference! To submission or death!"

Darien did not hesitate. With a feral roar, his bones cracked violently as his human form warped. Fur exploded across his shoulders, his jaw elongated into a snout of jagged fangs, and within two heartbeats, a massive, scarred gray wolf weighing over four hundred pounds lunged across the gravel.

His jaws snapped toward Laria’s throat with sickening speed.

Kale lunged forward, his own beast screaming to intervene, but two council sentries dropped their ceremonial halberds in front of him. "Sire, the law! If you interfere, the kingdom falls into civil war!"

"Get out of my way!" Kale roared, his eyes flashing solid gold.

In the center of the pit, Darien’s massive gray wolf closed the distance. Five feet. Three feet.

Laria did not run. She did not flinch.

She closed her eyes and breathed in.

Deep within her soul, the final shard of the wolfsbane prison dissolved into nothingness. The memory of the locked room, the whip, the dark cell, and the lonely tears burned away like morning mist under a blazing sun.

Awaken, her spirit commanded.

A blinding explosion of pure, radiant white light blasted outward from Laria’s body, knocking Darien’s mid-air wolf backward onto the gravel with a thunderous shockwave.
