Chapter 5 - BLOODLINE WHISPERS

The fever struck Laria three hours after she swallowed the first draught of Martha’s cleansing elixir.
It began as a cold ache behind her eyes, then blossomed into a roaring fire that raced through her bloodstream. She lay in the grand bed, her skin burning hot to the touch, drenched in cold sweat, her hands clutching the linen sheets so hard her fingernails shredded the fabric.
"Hold her down!" Martha ordered as Laria’s body arched violently, a strangled shriek tearing from her throat.
Two palace maidens tried to hold her shoulders, but Laria, despite her slender frame, threw them back with sudden, unnatural force. Her bones were shifting beneath the surface, cracking and reforming in an agonizing rhythm as the calcified shell of wolfsbane shattered within her spirit.
"Out," a deep voice rumbled from the door.
Kale strode into the room. He had stripped off his heavy armor, wearing only a loose linen tunic and trousers. Without waiting for Martha’s consent, he sat on the edge of the bed and gathered Laria against his chest.
"Kale... it burns... make it stop..." she sobbed into his shoulder, her teeth chattering uncontrollably even as radiant heat poured from her skin. "It feels like silver needles in my bones!"
"I know, little bird. I know," Kale murmured into her hair, wrapping his thick, muscular arms around her, letting his massive Alpha aura expand like a protective dome over the entire room. He released calming pheromones—the soothing, grounded scent of wet cedar, mountain rain, and unwavering dominance.
As soon as his scent enveloped her, Laria’s violent spasms slowed. Her face pressed into the crook of his neck, breathing in his power like oxygen. Her inner beast, trapped in darkness for nearly a decade, latched onto the Alpha’s life force, drawing strength from his steady heartbeat.
Martha stepped closer with a bowl of ice water, but suddenly she stopped dead in her tracks.
The healer’s eyes widened in sheer shock.
Faint, luminescent silver markings were glowing beneath Laria’s skin. They traced along her neck, over her collarbone, and down her arms like intricate vines of starlight. The air in the room grew thin, charged with an ethereal, crackling energy that smelled of ancient snow and celestial ozone.
"Sweet Mother of the Moon..." Martha gasped, dropping her linen cloth into the water.
"What is that?" Kale demanded, never loosening his protective grip on Laria.
"Those are not ordinary wolf markings, Sire," Martha whispered, her hands trembling as she pointed toward the shimmering silver patterns. "That is the Crest of the Lunar Omega. The legendary bloodline of the White Spires."
Kale’s gaze snapped to the healer. "The White Spires were destroyed two centuries ago. They were said to possess wolves whose shifts could heal pack blights and command the elements themselves."
"Lady Selene never spoke of her true ancestors," Martha whispered, awe softening her wrinkled face. "She fled the southern purge as an infant. Darien did not merely drug his daughter to steal her inheritance, Sire. He knew what she was! If a Lunar Omega shifts, their power cannot be bound by a Beta's authority. Their bond cannot be broken. Darien didn't just want her wealth—he was terrified of her!"
Laria let out another agonizing gasp, her eyes snapping open.
They were no longer human brown.
For three seconds, her irises shone with a brilliant, blinding silver light that cast shadows across the ceiling. A deep, resonant howl echoed not from her throat, but from the spiritual plane, vibrating through the castle foundations. Across the capital city, every guard dog whimpered, and every wolf shifted restlessly in their sleep.
Then, the light faded. Laria collapsed against Kale’s chest, her breathing finally evening out into a deep, healing slumber. The fever broke, leaving her skin cool and the faint silver runes dissolving back beneath her porcelain flesh.
Kale looked down at her sleeping face, brushing damp strands of hair from her forehead. His heart hammered violently against his ribs.
A Lunar Omega.
In shifter lore, an Omega was not weak; an Omega was the spiritual anchor of the kingdom, the ultimate counterbalance to an Alpha King's destructive fury. For generations, the royal line had ruled without a true counterpart, leading to endless wars, border raids, and bloodlust. The gods had placed a living miracle inside a neglected servant's cell, and a corrupt coward had beaten her for eight years to keep her light extinguished.
A knock sounded at the door. Captain Eric, head of the Royal Guard, stood in the threshold, his face pale and grim.
"Sire," Eric said quietly. "We have a problem."
Kale carefully laid Laria back against the pillows, pulling the furs up to her chin, before walking to the threshold. "Speak."
"Beta Darien has escaped his townhouse," Eric reported, clenching his fists. "He had loyalists among the garrison who slipped him past the western wall. And Sire... he did not leave alone. He raided the eastern armory and took the royal vault ledger. He is heading for the Frost Peaks to join the exiled rogue clans."
Kale’s eyes turned murderous. "Send the trackers. Sound the war horn. He does not leave northern territory alive."
"There is more, Sire," Eric hesitated. "Before he fled, he left a proclamation pinned to the Great Gate. He has invoked the Trial of Claws."
Kale went cold.
The Trial of Claws was an archaic, barbaric ritual predating the royal charter. If an accused high lord felt wronged by his monarch, he had the right to demand a public trial by combat under the full moon. If the King refused, the council could deem him an illegitimate tyrant and dissolve the pack alliance.

"He wants a spectacle," Kale growled. "He knows he cannot beat me in open combat. What is his angle?"
"The challenge is not directed at you, Sire," Eric swallowed hard, looking toward the bed where Laria lay sleeping. "The proclamation names Laria. Under ancient law, an unshifted heir accused of bringing shame to a noble line must prove their right to exist in the ring against their sire... or be torn apart as an abomination."
