Chapter 8 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE MONEY

Federal investigators became involved.
Daniel couldn't tell me everything.
But I knew enough.
The man threatening Rachel wasn't interested in my inheritance.
He was interested in military information.
My family had accidentally become part of something far larger.
Rachel gave investigators everything.
Phone numbers.
Messages.
Addresses.
Payment records.
Eventually, they identified the man.
His name was Marcus Hale.
A former contractor who had connections to people trying to exploit military personnel data.
Rachel had been used because she was desperate.
My mother had unknowingly made the situation worse by sharing financial information.
And I had become the target because of Daniel.
For the first time, I stopped thinking about my mother as the villain.
She had made terrible choices.
But there were people far more dangerous outside our family.
Marcus disappeared before investigators could arrest him.
For two weeks, we lived under increased security.
Daniel slept with the lights on.
I kept Iris close.
Then one night, I woke to a sound downstairs.
I froze.
Daniel was already awake.
He motioned for me to stay in bed.
He went downstairs.
I heard a crash.
Then silence.
I grabbed Iris.
Minutes later, Daniel returned.
"He's gone."
"Who?"
"Someone broke into the house."
My blood ran cold.
"What did he take?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Nothing."
"Then why?"
"He left something."
He handed me an envelope.
My name was written across it.
Inside was a photograph.
My mother.
Rachel.
Marcus.
And another man.
My grandfather.
The photograph was decades old.
On the back was a message:
YOUR FAMILY HAS BEEN LYING LONGER THAN YOU THINK.
I stared.
"What does this mean?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
Laura examined the photograph.
Then she noticed something.
"Look."
In the corner was a company logo.
An old logistics company.
One my grandfather had owned.
The same company that had later become the foundation of my family's wealth.
"Why would Marcus have this?"
Laura looked at me.
"Maybe because this isn't about your grandfather's trust."
"What is it about?"
She turned the photograph over.
"There may have been an investigation into your grandfather's company decades ago."
I felt dizzy.
"Was he involved in something illegal?"
"We don't know."
"Then find out."
Laura did.
Three days later, she found archived court records.
My grandfather had been investigated for financial fraud.
But charges were never filed.
The case had disappeared.
And the person who had provided evidence against him?
A young accountant.
His name was Marcus Hale's father.
I stared at the document.
The connection suddenly became terrifying.
This wasn't random.
Marcus had inherited a grudge.
But why target me?
Because my grandfather's trust contained something else.
A hidden archive.
Documents that could prove what really happened decades ago.
And someone believed I had access to them.
Laura looked at me.
"Do you know where your grandfather kept his personal records?"
I thought.
Then remembered.
"His old house."
"Where is it?"
"Ohio."
Daniel stood.
"We're going."
We arrived two days later.
The house had been empty for years.
Dust covered everything.
I walked into my grandfather's study.
For the first time, I felt like a child again.
I remembered sitting beneath his desk.
Listening to him tell stories.
He had always told me:
"When everyone is shouting, look for the quiet person in the room."
I opened drawers.
Nothing.
Then I saw the bookshelf.
One book sat slightly forward.
I pulled it.
A panel opened.
Inside was a small metal box.
My hands shook.
I opened it.
Documents.
Photographs.
A cassette tape.
And one letter.
The letter was addressed to me.
I opened it.
Elena,
If you have found this, then the past has finally caught up.
There was never anything illegal about the trust.
The secret is in the original company records.
And the person who betrayed me was someone I loved.
I looked at Daniel.
"Who?"
The final line answered.
May you like
Diane knew.
I stopped breathing.
