Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY ACCOUNT

The document was dated eight years earlier.

I was twenty-four.

Fresh out of college.

Newly married.

Already working two jobs while Daniel completed military training.

I remembered that period.

Mom had told me Rachel was struggling.

She said the family needed me.

I had believed her.

But the document showed something different.

My mother and Rachel had apparently discussed my finances as if they belonged to the entire family.

There were notes.

Budgets.

Projected income.

Even estimates of how much Daniel and I could "reasonably contribute" every month.

I felt sick.

Laura confirmed the document was authentic.

"Where did you get this?" I asked.

"I didn't."

Someone had anonymously sent it.

"Could it be fabricated?"

"We're verifying it."

Two days later, Laura called.

"It's real."

"Who sent it?"

"We're trying to find out."

Then she added:

"Elena, there's something you need to understand."

"What?"

"Your mother may have been receiving more than money."

"What do you mean?"

"Someone appears to have had access to your military benefits information."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

"We don't know."

I immediately called Daniel.

"Are your records secure?"

"Why?"

I told him.

His expression changed.

"I'll contact the appropriate office."

That night, I barely slept.

At 2:30 a.m., my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE FAMILY ALONE.

Then another.

MONEY ISN'T THE ONLY THING PEOPLE CAN TAKE FROM YOU.

I stared at the screen.

Then I looked at Iris.

For the first time, fear replaced anger.

I called the police.

An officer came to the house.

He documented everything.

"Has anyone threatened you before?"

I showed him the messages.

He frowned.

"Keep everything."

I nodded.

The next morning, Daniel called.

"Someone attempted to access my personnel information."

My stomach dropped.

"Who?"

"We don't know yet."

"Daniel..."

"I'm okay."

"But Iris—"

"I know."

His voice softened.

"I'm coming home."

"You can't just leave."

"I'm not abandoning my post."

He paused.

"I'm requesting emergency family leave."

For the first time since Iris was born, I let myself believe he might actually be coming home.

Meanwhile, my mother changed tactics.

She stopped calling.

Stopped texting.

Instead, she started talking.

To relatives.

Neighbors.

Friends.

Church members.

Everyone received a version of the same story.

Elena had become selfish after having a baby.

Elena had money but refused to help her family.

Elena had abandoned her mother.

Elena thought she was better than everyone.

The messages began arriving.

Your mother is heartbroken.

You should forgive.

Family is everything.

I didn't respond.

Then someone posted online:

Some daughters become mothers and suddenly forget who sacrificed everything for them.

No name.

But everyone knew.

I saved screenshots.

Laura smiled when I showed her.

"Good."

"Good?"

"She's creating a record."

"Of what?"

"Potential harassment and defamation."

I stared at her.

"I don't want to destroy my family."

Laura's expression softened.

"Elena, you didn't destroy anything."

She tapped the folder.

"They did."

Daniel came home six days later.

I met him at the airport with Iris.

The moment he saw us, he dropped his bag.

He picked up our daughter.

Then he hugged me.

I buried my face in his chest.

"I missed you."

"I know."

"I was scared."

"I know."

For the first time, I didn't have to be strong.

That night, after Iris fell asleep, Daniel sat beside me.

"We're going to handle this."

"I don't want revenge."

"Neither do I."

"What do you want?"

"Peace."

I looked at him.

"And justice?"

He nodded.

"If necessary."

The next morning, Laura called.

"We found the person who sent the document."

"Who?"

She hesitated.

"Rachel's ex-husband."

I stared.

"What?"

"He wants custody of their children."

"And?"

"He claims Rachel has serious financial problems and has been hiding them."

My stomach tightened.

May you like

"What does he know?"

"Enough to change everything."
