Chapter 6

The silence in the lobby was deafening.

I was wearing a tailored ivory pantsuit that concealed the bandages on my back. My hair was pulled into a sleek chignon, my lips painted in the bold scarlet lipstick Caleb had spent seven years forbidding me to wear. At my side stood Silas and Everett, flanking me like twin pillars of iron.

Caleb stared at me as if he were looking at a ghost.

"Madeline?" he gasped, his voice cracking. "What... what are you doing here? You belong in a hospital!"

"I took an early discharge," I said, my voice carrying cleanly across the marble room, echoing into the ears of every employee and camera crew clustered near the doors. "I had urgent business to attend to. As the forty-nine percent shareholder of Harlan Holdings, and the newly appointed proxy for Whitcomb Capital's majority debt position, I just called a vote of no confidence."

"You can't do that!" Vanessa shrieked, dropping her fragile victim act entirely. "You're a housewife! You don't know anything about this company!"

I turned my gaze to Vanessa. She withered beneath it.

"I was structuring cross-border leveraged buyouts on Wall Street while you were still forging expense reports, Vanessa," I said smoothly. "And speaking of your reports—the SEC agents behind you would love to hear how fifty thousand dollars of Harlan Global’s charity fund ended up paying for your personal apartment in Manhattan."

Vanessa's face went completely bloodless. She stepped away from Caleb, instinctively trying to put distance between them.

"Maddie, stop this!" Caleb pleaded, his eyes darting frantically toward the flashing press cameras outside. "Think of Sophie! Think of our family! We can talk about this in private. Whatever you want, we can settle it. Just call off your brothers!"

"You didn't want to talk in private two nights ago, Caleb," I said, walking slowly toward him until I stood just three feet away. "You wanted an audience. You locked the doors. You called thirty strikes 'discipline.' You told me I had nowhere to go."

I reached into my purse and pulled out a sleek flash drive, handing it directly to the lead SEC investigator.

"On this drive, Agent Miller, you will find the complete, unedited server logs from the Harlan estate. It contains video evidence of Ms. Crane staging a false crime to incite an assault, audio recordings of Mr. Harlan plotting offshore wire fraud, and the forensic ledger of forty million dollars being routed through shell entities in Grand Cayman."

"You bitch!" Caleb lunged at me.

Before his fingers could even brush my sleeve, Everett stepped in. Everett caught Caleb by the throat with one hand, slamming him back against the marble pillar with enough force to knock the wind out of his lungs.

"Touch my sister again," Everett whispered into Caleb’s ear, "and the police won't get the chance to arrest you."

Two Stamford police officers immediately stepped in, pulling Everett back while forcing Caleb’s arms behind his back.

"Caleb Harlan, you are under arrest for felony domestic battery, assault with a deadly weapon, and witness intimidation," the officer stated, clicking steel handcuffs around Caleb's wrists.

"Madeline!" Caleb screamed as he was dragged toward the squad car, kicking and thrashing against the officers. "You can't do this to me! I made you! You're nothing without me!"

I didn't blink. I didn't flinch.

As the sirens began to wail, I turned to Vanessa, who was shaking violently as an investigator approached her with a separate set of cuffs.

"Nice dress, Vanessa," I said softly, glancing down at her designer coat. "I hope you like orange."
