Chapter 4

The penthouse suite at Massachusetts General Hospital was guarded by two armed sentries when I woke up the following morning.
The scent of antiseptic and clean linen filled the air. My back was heavily bandaged, treated for severe lacerations and deep contusions. Sophie was curled up on a plush sofa across the room, fast asleep under a heavy fleece blanket, clutching a new stuffed bear Dean had bought her.
Sitting in two leather armchairs near the window were Silas and Dean. Their laptops were open, screens glowing with spreadsheets, bank statements, and flight manifests.
"Morning, kiddo," Dean said gently, looking up from his monitor. Despite his military edge, his eyes held nothing but warmth. He walked over, handing me a glass of warm water with lemon. "Doctor says the wounds won't leave permanent scars if we keep the dressings fresh. Sophie slept through the night. She’s safe."
Tears pricked my eyes. "Thank you, Dean."
"Don't thank us," Silas said, adjusting his glasses without looking up from his legal drafts. "Thank yourself for making that call. You should have made it five years ago."
"I was ashamed," I admitted, staring down at my hands. "Dad spent his whole life building an empire, and it killed him. I wanted something quiet. I thought Caleb loved me for me. I didn't want him to feel overshadowed by the Whitcomb name. So I gave up my career, gave up my shares, gave up everything to make him feel like a king."
"A king who hit you with a whip," Dean growled, his knuckles whitening.
"He won't hit anyone ever again," Silas stated flatly. "I’ve filed for divorce on grounds of extreme cruelty, felony domestic battery, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. We are pursuing sole legal and physical custody with zero visitation rights. But Caleb isn't lying down. His PR firm just released a statement to the New York Post."
Silas turned his laptop toward me.
My heart dropped.
The headline was already trending on social media:
TECH MOGUL CALEB HARLAN’S WIFE SUFFERS VIOLENT PSYCHOTIC EPISODE AT CHILD’S BIRTHDAY; ABDUCTS DAUGHTER WITH UNLICENSED MILITIA.
Beneath the headline was a picture of Vanessa Crane, looking frail and bruised, holding up her slashed designer gown. An anonymous source—clearly Vanessa—claimed I had developed severe post-partum paranoia, routinely abused household staff, and destroyed property in a jealous rage before fleeing into the night with armed men.
"He's trying to win the public court before we hit the legal court," Silas said coldly. "He thinks if he paints you as unstable, he can neutralize the abuse allegations and force a settlement."
"Can he?" I asked, a knot tightening in my stomach.
Dean smiled, a terrifying, razor-thin smile. "Madeline, do you think I spent the last twelve hours sleeping?"
He tapped a key on his keyboard.
"Caleb deleted the cloud backups from the estate’s security servers last night," Dean explained. "He thought he was being clever. But Harlan's smart-home network was installed four years ago by a subcontractor that uses our cloud architecture. I restored every single camera feed from the mansion."
On Dean’s screen, a video popped up.
It was timestamped 5:15 PM yesterday—forty-five minutes before the dinner party.
The camera was positioned in the second-floor hallway, looking into the open doorway of the guest suite.
On the screen was Vanessa Crane.
She wasn't crying. She wasn't scared. She was humming to herself as she took a pair of heavy tailor's shears from her purse. Methodically, deliberately, she shredded the cream-colored gown hanging on the door. Then, she looked directly into the vanity mirror, pinched her own cheeks to redden them, and pulled Caleb’s mother’s vintage diamond tennis bracelet out of her pocket, slipping it into her bra.

"She staged the whole thing," I breathed.
"That's just the appetizer," Dean whispered, leaning in. "Wait until you hear what Caleb and Vanessa were discussing in his home office twenty minutes before that."
