Chapter 10 - The Promise That Changed Everything

The cemetery gates were locked when Dominic arrived before dawn.

He had left Lily in a secure hospital suite with Elena, Mrs. Bell, and a medical team he trusted. Two separate security teams guarded the entrances, and every member had been personally vetted.

For the first time in years, Dominic had refused to let fear dictate his decisions.

He would protect his daughter.

But he would not turn her life into a prison.

Gabriel Cross waited beside Anthony Moretti's mausoleum, wearing a dark overcoat and holding a leather briefcase.

"You came alone," Gabriel observed.

"Not quite."

Dominic's men were positioned beyond the cemetery wall, close enough to intervene without being seen.

Gabriel smiled.

"Your father would have been proud."

"Don't talk about my father."

"Why? Because you finally understand what he was?"

Dominic stepped closer.

"I understand that he stole my child."

"He saved your empire."

"He destroyed my family."

"Families are always destroyed by something, Dominic. Money. Pride. Love. Your father simply understood which one was most expensive."

Dominic's hand tightened around his weapon.

"Open the mausoleum."

Gabriel unlocked the side entrance.

Inside, beneath the marble floor, they found a narrow metal compartment containing medical records, photographs, and a sealed envelope bearing Elena's name.

Dominic opened the first file.

It confirmed that Elena had survived the delivery. It also contained proof that Anthony had paid hospital officials to falsify the infant records.

But the second file was worse.

Two babies had been delivered within minutes of each other.

One belonged to Elena.

The other belonged to a woman whose name had been removed from the original record.

Both children had survived.

Then one of the hospital's newborn bracelets had been switched.

Dominic read the report twice.

"Who was the other mother?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"Anthony never told me."

"You're lying."

"I'm telling you what I know."

Dominic slammed the file against the stone ledge.

"Why would my father switch two babies?"

"Because the second child was connected to a secret that could have brought down several powerful families. He believed controlling both children would give him leverage over people who could otherwise destroy him."

"Where is the other child?"

Gabriel's silence was answer enough.

Dominic stepped toward him.

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Then why contact me?"

"Because someone else does."

Gabriel opened the final envelope.

Inside was a recent photograph of a teenage girl standing outside a school. She had dark hair, pale eyes, and a silver crescent necklace identical to Elena's.

On the back was a date and an address.

Dominic stared at the picture.

The girl was too old to be Lily's twin, but the resemblance was unmistakable.

"Who is she?"

Gabriel looked at him.

"Her name is Sophie."

"Where did you find her?"

"I didn't. Someone sent me the photograph two weeks ago. The message said the Moretti family had one last debt to pay."

Dominic's phone vibrated.

Elena had sent him a message.

Lily is awake. She wants to know if you're coming home.

For the first time that morning, he smiled.

He photographed the documents, ordered his men to secure the evidence, and left Gabriel in custody to face the authorities.

He would not bury another secret.

Not even to protect his own name.

When Dominic returned to the hospital, Lily was sitting up in bed with Mr. Bear tucked beneath her uninjured arm.

Her face brightened.

"You came back!"

He approached slowly, then knelt beside her bed.

"I promised, didn't I?"

She touched his cheek.

"Are you going to take me home?"

"If you still want to come."

Lily looked toward Elena.

Her mother stood beside the window, tears shining in her eyes.

"Can Mommy come too?"

Dominic looked at the woman he'd mourned for six years, the woman who had survived terrible things and still found the courage to return.

"If she wants to."

Elena crossed the room and knelt beside them.

"I want to."

Lily reached for both of them.

They embraced carefully, mindful of her bandaged arm.

For a long moment, none of them spoke.

Then Lily whispered, "Does this mean I have a real family now?"

Dominic pressed a kiss to her forehead.

"You always deserved one."

"Even with my wheelchair?"

He drew back enough to meet her eyes.

"Your wheelchair doesn't make you less lovable, Lily. And you never have to earn your place in this family by being easy to care for."

She considered that seriously.

"Can I still have the garden?"

Dominic laughed softly.

"We'll build you the biggest garden in New York."

"With birds?"

"Every kind you want."

"And a room for Mr. Bear?"

"That part is nonnegotiable."

Lily giggled, and Elena rested her head against Dominic's shoulder.

The future wouldn't be simple. There would be legal battles, therapy, questions about the past, and a long road toward rebuilding trust. Dominic would have to confront the damage his family's empire had caused and decide what kind of man he wanted to be.

But that morning, he made a different kind of promise.

He would be present.

He would tell the truth.

And when Lily asked whether he would leave her, he would never make her guess at the answer.

Three months later, Lily moved into Dominic's Manhattan home.

The mansion had been redesigned to accommodate her wheelchair. The garden contained raised flower beds, wide paths, and a little wooden bench beneath an old oak tree.

Mrs. Bell visited every Sunday.

Elena began helping Lily recover the memories that had been buried beneath years of fear. Some days were difficult. Other days were filled with laughter.

Dominic sold several properties connected to his father's criminal operations and cooperated with investigators. He didn't pretend that one act of redemption erased a lifetime of wrongdoing.

He simply began making different choices.

On Lily's seventh birthday, she wore the same blue dress she'd worn at the orphanage. The pearl buttons had been repaired, and Mr. Bear sat beside her cake.

Dominic knelt beside her wheelchair while everyone sang.

When the candles were blown out, Lily leaned toward him.

"I have a question."

He smiled.

"Another one?"

She nodded solemnly.

"Do you remember what I asked you under the oak tree?"

He did.

Every word.

"Would you leave me too?"

Lily studied his face.

"You didn't say you'd stay forever."

Dominic's smile faded into something more tender.

"You're right. I didn't."

"Why?"

"Because I can't control everything that happens in life. But I can choose what I do, and I can promise to keep showing up for you."

She thought about that, then held out her little finger.

"Pinky promise?"

Dominic hooked his finger around hers.

"Pinky promise."

She hugged him.

And for the first time in six years, Dominic Moretti felt that the future might hold something other than loss.

Then, just before the guests left, a courier arrived with a small unmarked package.

There was no return address.

Inside lay a silver crescent necklace, an old hospital bracelet, and a photograph of the teenage girl from the cemetery.

On the back, someone had written a message in careful handwriting.

Lily isn't the only daughter Elena gave birth to. Ask her why she never told you about the second baby.

Dominic looked across the room.

Elena was laughing with Lily beside the birthday cake, her face full of a happiness he had once believed impossible.

He slipped the photograph into his pocket.

For now, he would let his daughter enjoy her birthday.

But that night, after Lily had fallen asleep, he would ask Elena one question.

And whatever the answer was, he knew one thing with absolute certainty.

The Moretti family's darkest secret had not been buried with Anthony.

It had only just begun to surface.
