Chapter 1 - Would You Leave Me Too?

"A Feared Mafia Boss Knelt Before My Wheelchair—But My Five-Word Question Left Him Speechless\
\
The third family rejected me because of my wheelchair, and by the time the black SUVs rolled into our orphanage, I had already decided nobody would ever want me. But when the most feared mafia boss in New York knelt in the dirt beside me, I asked him five innocent words that made his entire world stop.\
\
My name is Lily, and I was only six years old. That morning, I'd spent forever fastening the pearl buttons on my favorite blue dress, hoping someone would finally choose me.\
\
Mrs. Bell had taught me to practice smiling in the mirror. ""Five seconds, sweetheart,"" she'd said, ""so people can see how happy you are.""\
\
I'd even brushed my teddy bear's crooked ear until it lay flat. I wanted everything to be perfect when my new mommy and daddy arrived.\
\
But the woman in the expensive linen suit barely looked at my face. Her eyes dropped straight to my wheelchair.\
\
""Does she need special care?"" her husband asked the volunteer, as though I couldn't hear him.\
\
""She's incredibly bright,"" the volunteer replied. ""Her artwork even won a ribbon at the spring fair.""\
\
""I didn't ask about her drawings,"" he snapped. ""I asked how much trouble she'll be.""\
\
Then his wife whispered the words that crushed me.\
\
""Come on, honey. We need a normal child.""\
\
My smile disappeared, but I refused to cry in front of them. I wheeled myself beneath the old oak tree, clutching Mr. Bear against my chest.\
\
I wanted to tell them I could read, draw beautiful pictures, and recognize every bird in the garden. Instead, I sat alone, wondering why being different meant nobody could love me.\
\
Then three enormous black SUVs entered the courtyard.\
\
Men wearing dark suits climbed out, and suddenly everyone stopped talking. A tall man with tattooed arms stepped from the middle vehicle, his cold eyes sweeping across the orphanage.\
\
I heard someone whisper, ""Dominic Moretti.""\
\
I didn't understand why everyone looked terrified. I only knew the orphanage director rushed toward him, smiling nervously.\
\
""Mr. Moretti! We weren't expecting you personally!""\
\
""I said I'd come,"" he replied, looking past her. ""Why is that little girl sitting alone?""\
\
The director glanced toward my wheelchair. ""Unfortunately, families find her condition difficult.""\
\
""Her condition?"" His voice became dangerously quiet.\
\
""She needs extra assistance. Most families aren't prepared for that responsibility.""\
\
I watched his expression harden. ""Has anyone asked what she wants?""\
\
Nobody answered.\
\
Then, to my astonishment, he walked directly toward me, leaving his bodyguards behind.\
\
""Hello, princess,"" he said, crouching beside my wheelchair.\
\
I stared at the tattoos covering his arms. ""Are you a bad man?""\
\
His mouth twitched. ""Some people think so.""\
\
""Then why did you bring presents?""\
\
""Maybe bad men can still do good things.""\
\
I hugged my teddy bear tighter. ""Do you have any children?""\
\
""No, sweetheart.""\
\
""Do you want one?""\
\
Something changed in his eyes, and I suddenly felt brave enough to tell him the truth.\
\
""Nobody wants me,"" I whispered. ""They say my wheelchair makes me too much trouble.""\
\
His jaw tightened. He took off his expensive jacket, placed it on the grass, and lowered both knees into the dirt.\
\
""Listen to me, Lily. You are not a burden.""\
\
My eyes filled with tears. ""Then why does everybody leave me?""\
\
For several seconds, he couldn't answer.\
\
I reached out, gently touching the tattoo on his forearm. My voice trembled as I asked the five words I'd been afraid to say.\
\
""Would you leave me too?""\
