Chapter 6 - The Key in the Cotton

Damian knelt before the little girl. He gently took the rabbit from her small hands.
"Show me, sweetheart," Damian said softly.
Mia reached her tiny fingers into the seam where the pocket watch had been hidden. Her fingers fished around the cotton batting and pulled out a small, heavy brass cylinder no larger than a lipstick container. It was cold, sealed with black wax, and stamped with the Romano family crest.
"Mommy said this opens the vault under the museum," Mia whispered, her eyelids fluttering with exhaustion. "She told me the bad men wanted to steal it, so she told me to run into the pretty garden and wait for the man with the gray coat."
"Where is your mommy right now, Mia?" Damian asked, his chest tight.
"Asleep in the van," Mia said innocently. "The men in black coats put her in the back. But she pushed me out the window first and told me to run through the iron bars."
Damian carried the girl over to the leather sofa, tucked a wool blanket over her shoulders, and waited until her breathing settled into a peaceful rhythm.
Then he stood up and examined the brass cylinder. He scraped the wax away with a pocketknife. Inside was a high-frequency security keycard and a small slip of paper with a handwritten address: *The Bellini Gallery, Downtown Philadelphia.*
The Bellini Gallery was owned directly by Silvio Romano.
Damian pulled out his phone and dialed Luca. "Assemble thirty men. Heavy armor. Unmarked vehicles. We’re going to Uncle Silvio’s gallery."
"Boss?" Luca’s voice sounded hesitant over the line. "Uncle Silvio just called the main line five minutes ago. He said he has an urgent matter of life and death to discuss with you. He’s already waiting in the downstairs conference room."

Damian felt a chill run down his spine. The traitor wasn't in Philadelphia. He had just walked into the lion's den.
