Chapter 1 - The Garden

If your hand moves another inch, we're going to have a problem.

Damian Romano said it before he opened his eyes. He regretted it as soon as he saw her.

A little girl stood beside the bench, close enough to touch the pistol under his jacket. She was barefoot, and her feet were gray with garden dust. She held a stuffed rabbit by one ear, and its fur had been loved down to the threads. She was perhaps three years old.

Hi, she said.

She said it the way you greet a neighbor over a fence. This was the private garden of the most feared man in Pennsylvania, behind walls and cameras and thirty-eight armed guards.

Damian's hand stayed where it was. Who are you?

Mia.

She climbed onto the bench, and he let her, because no part of him had been trained for this. She crawled across his lap and settled against his chest. Her cheek found the place over his heart and stayed.

You're warm, she whispered.

Seconds later she was asleep.

Damian sat rigid, arms lifted away from her like a man holding something that might go off. Men had tried to shoot him. Men had tried to poison him and take his family apart, and he had learned to read every one of them by their eyes. Now he could feel a small, steady breath through his shirt. He could not read it at all.

He counted what she had passed. The wall, the sensors, the cameras, the dogs, and the men who rotated every four hours. Nobody had stopped her.

Something caught the light.

A torn seam ran along the rabbit's side, and a silver chain poked through it. Damian worked it free slowly, with two fingers, so as not to wake her.

A pocket watch slid into his palm.

The silver was worn smooth on one side, where a thumb had rubbed it ten thousand times. Damian knew that thumb. He had watched it every morning of his childhood, flicking the lid open at the breakfast table while his father pretended not to check whether Damian was finished with his eggs.

His father had carried this watch for thirty years. Twenty-two years ago, Anthony Romano had died of a heart attack in the family boathouse. The watch had never been found.

Boss?

Luca Marino stood on the gravel path with one hand half-raised toward his holster. He stared at the child on Damian's chest as though the world had stopped following its own rules.

How the hell did she get in here?

Damian looked at him for a long, cold moment.

May you like

You tell me.
