Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF THE TRUTH

Rebecca pushed Khloe and Claire behind the metal desk.
“Stay down.”
The investigator moved toward the door, but a gunshot struck the wall beside him. He dropped behind a filing cabinet.
Lorenzo entered the room carrying a pistol.
His expensive suit was rumpled, his face pale.
“I'm sorry, Khloe,” he said. “I never wanted it to come to this.”
“You let people humiliate me for years.”
“I gave you a job.”
“You threatened to fire me if I made the wrong person uncomfortable.”
“I had debts.”
“So did I.”
For the first time, Lorenzo looked ashamed.
Then the man behind him stepped into the light.
Senator Kensington.
He carried no weapon. He didn't need one. Two men followed him, both wearing the expression of people accustomed to being obeyed.
“Where's the ledger?” the senator asked.
Khloe stood slowly.
“Why did you help kill my father?”
The senator's eyes narrowed.
“Your father was a decent man who made a foolish decision. He believed he could threaten powerful people with documents he didn't understand.”
“He understood enough to know you were stealing money from a child.”
“He understood enough to become a liability.”
Lorenzo looked away.
Khloe felt something inside her harden.
“You're proud of that?”
“Pride has nothing to do with it. Your father was going to expose a financial arrangement that protected dozens of people. Jobs would have disappeared. Political careers would have ended. Families would have been destroyed.”
“You mean people like you would have lost power.”
The senator smiled thinly.
“You sound like your father.”
“Good.”
His smile vanished.
“Give me the ledger.”
“No.”
One of the men moved toward Claire.
Khloe stepped in front of her sister.
The senator sighed.
“I was hoping you'd be more reasonable.”
“You murdered my father, destroyed my mother's life, and tried to frame the man who helped me find the truth. What exactly would you consider reasonable?”
“Survival.”
He nodded toward Lorenzo.
“Take it.”
Lorenzo hesitated.
The senator's voice sharpened.
“Now.”
Lorenzo reached for the folder on the desk.
Khloe grabbed the metal cabinet and shoved it sideways. It crashed into his legs, knocking the pistol from his hand.
The investigator lunged from behind the filing cabinet. One of the senator's men fired, shattering a window.
Rebecca shouted for everyone to get down.
Claire seized the ledger while Khloe kicked Lorenzo's weapon beneath the desk.
Then the office door burst open.
Matteo entered with two Costello security men and several uniformed officers.
“Police!” someone shouted.
The room erupted in confusion.
The senator raised his hands.
Lorenzo tried to run.
Matteo caught him before he reached the hallway.
Within minutes, Senator Kensington was handcuffed beside the desk, shouting about his rights and demanding to speak to the attorney general.
Khloe stood trembling among the broken glass.
Matteo approached her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Good. Dominic told me to find you.”
“Where is he?”
“Still in custody. His lawyers got the arrest warrant suspended, but he hasn't been released.”
“Then why are you here?”
“Because he knew the senator would come for the evidence.”
Khloe looked at the ledger.
“He knew?”
“He said powerful men don't abandon secrets. They eliminate the people who can reveal them.”
The recording was delivered to federal investigators along with the financial records. By morning, the senator's office had been searched, several bank accounts had been frozen, and two former employees had agreed to testify.
But the most important evidence was still missing.
The original trust document that proved Anna's inheritance had never been legally transferred.
Elena believed Daniel had hidden it separately.
“Where?” Khloe asked when she visited her in a protected residence.
Elena looked at the locket in Khloe's hand.
“Your mother once told me that Daniel trusted ordinary things more than locked safes. He said the safest place for a secret was somewhere nobody thought worth searching.”
Khloe remembered the apartment where she'd spent years counting every dollar.
The cracked kitchen tile.
The sewing kit.
The old recipe book her mother had carried from house to house.
She suddenly understood.
“My mother's cookbook.”
Elena nodded.
“Daniel gave it to her the week before he died.”
Khloe rushed back to her apartment with Claire and Rebecca.
The cookbook sat on a shelf above the stove, its cover stained with years of use. Khloe opened it carefully, turning past recipes written in her mother's handwriting.
Halfway through, she found a page that had been glued to another.
Inside was a thin plastic sleeve containing the original trust document.
The signature was genuine.
The seals were intact.
The document named Anna Costello as the primary beneficiary and established that any attempt to conceal her identity or transfer her inheritance unlawfully would trigger an independent investigation.
At the bottom, Daniel had added a handwritten note.
To my girls: If you found this together, then the truth finally brought you home.
Khloe began to cry.
Claire wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
For years, Khloe had believed she had inherited only debt and grief from her father.
Now she understood that he'd left her something else.
A way to protect the family he'd tried to save.
Rebecca photographed the document and contacted the federal prosecutor.
Then her phone rang.
She listened, her face tightening.
“What is it?” Khloe asked.
“Dominic has been released.”
Relief flooded Khloe's chest.
“That's good.”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Not entirely. The prosecutor says Dominic's uncle may have survived the boating accident that supposedly killed him.”
Khloe stared at her.
“That's impossible.”
“Apparently, the death certificate was issued without a body ever being identified.”
For fifteen years, Dominic had believed his uncle was dead.

Now the man who had ordered Daniel Bennett's murder might still be alive.
And he might be watching them.
