Chapter 6 - THE HEIR WHO NEVER EXISTED

Dominic crossed the ballroom so quickly that the guests barely had time to move.

“Mother?”

Elena's face crumpled.

He stopped in front of her, afraid that touching her would make the moment disappear.

For fifteen years, he'd mourned a woman whose grave he'd never been allowed to visit. His uncle had told him the hospital had cremated her remains after the fire. He'd been given a small box of ashes and a funeral attended by people who seemed more concerned with appearances than grief.

Now she was standing before him.

Alive.

“You're real,” he whispered.

Elena reached for his face.

“So are you.”

He closed his eyes as she touched his cheek.

For a moment, the ruthless head of the Costello family became a boy who had spent half his life believing he'd been abandoned by everyone he loved.

Then he stepped back.

“Why?”

Elena's expression fell.

“Because your uncle told me he'd kill you if I returned.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I thought he might spare you if he believed I was gone.”

“You left me with him.”

“I know.”

Her voice broke.

“I've spent every day wishing I'd found another way.”

Khloe watched them from a few feet away. She recognized the pain in Elena's face. It was the same helplessness she'd seen in her own mother's eyes during the final months of her illness.

Some choices were made out of fear.

That didn't mean they left no wounds.

Dominic looked at the young woman standing beside Elena.

“Who is she?”

The woman stepped forward.

“My name is Claire Bennett.”

Khloe's breath caught.

“Bennett?”

Claire nodded.

“Daniel Bennett was my adoptive father. He raised me in Maine under another name. I only learned the truth three months ago.”

She opened her locket.

Inside was a photograph of a newborn and a tiny hospital bracelet bearing the name Anna Costello.

Khloe felt the room tilt.

“Anna?”

“My birth name.”

The missing baby.

The child in the photograph.

The daughter of Dominic's father.

The rightful heir to a fortune controlled by a man who had spent years convincing everyone she had never existed.

“Your father adopted you?” Khloe asked.

Claire shook her head.

“Daniel arranged my adoption with a couple he trusted. He visited when he could. He left letters, but I didn't know who he was until I was twenty-one. By then, he'd been dead for years.”

“Why come forward now?”

“Because someone tried to kill me.”

The ballroom fell silent.

Claire reached into her handbag and removed a photograph of a burned car.

“My adoptive parents died when I was sixteen. The police called it an accident. Three months ago, I found documents proving the car had been tampered with.”

Dominic's expression darkened.

“You believe your parents were murdered?”

“I believe they knew something they weren't supposed to know.”

She looked at Khloe.

“And I believe your father died because he refused to tell them where I was.”

Khloe's knees weakened.

For twelve years, she'd lived with the belief that her father had simply lost control of his car on a wet road. She remembered the police officer who delivered the news, the insurance paperwork, and the hospital bills her mother struggled to pay.

Now every memory seemed contaminated.

“Did you know him?” she asked.

Claire nodded.

“He used to visit me on my birthdays. He brought books, told me stories, and always said my parents loved me more than anything.”

Tears filled Khloe's eyes.

“That sounds like him.”

Claire reached for her hand.

“He told me I had a sister.”

Khloe stared at her.

“He did?”

“He said if I ever found her, I should tell her she wasn't responsible for what happened to our family.”

Khloe broke.

She covered her mouth as tears spilled down her face. Claire wrapped her arms around her, and the two women held each other while cameras flashed around them.

For the first time in years, Khloe wasn't alone in carrying her father's memory.

But the reunion was interrupted by Senator Kensington.

“This is a fabrication,” he announced. “A coordinated attempt to extort the Costello family.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You've spent fifteen years telling that lie.”

The senator lifted his chin.

“Your word means nothing.”

“Then perhaps the evidence will mean something.”

She handed Dominic a sealed folder.

Inside were bank records, private letters, and a copy of the original trust establishing Anna Costello as the primary beneficiary of her father's estate if he died before reaching adulthood.

The trust had never been dissolved.

The assets had never legally transferred to Dominic's uncle.

Instead, the uncle had used forged documents to take control of the family holdings, with the senator helping to conceal the fraud.

Dominic read the final page twice.

His uncle hadn't simply lied about his mother.

He had stolen the family empire.

And Dominic had inherited a criminal organization built on that theft.

“Why did you keep this?” he asked Elena.

“Because I couldn't prove it was safe to reveal. The original ledger was the only document linking the money transfers to your uncle and the senator.”

Khloe looked at the brass key they'd recovered from the brick.

“The ledger.”

Elena nodded.

“Daniel hid it somewhere no one would think to look.”

“Where?”

Elena's eyes moved toward Khloe's locket.

“Your father believed the truth should belong to the people who had suffered for it.”

Before she could explain, the ballroom doors burst open.

Police officers entered, followed by men in dark suits.

Senator Kensington straightened.

“Thank God. Arrest them.”

The lead officer ignored him.

He approached Dominic and held out a warrant.

“Dominic Costello, you're under arrest for conspiracy, racketeering, and the murder of Daniel Bennett.”

Khloe's heart stopped.

Dominic looked at the warrant, then at the senator.

The old man smiled.

It was the first genuine smile Khloe had seen on his face.

May you like

Because the warrant had been issued that afternoon.

And the signature authorizing it belonged to a judge who had died six months earlier.
