Chapter 1 - THE WIFE HE LEFT BEHINDVincent Moretti promised his pregnant wife he would come back for her when their private jet suffered a catastrophic emergency. But he took his first love to safety first—and seconds later, the aircraft exploded with Anna still inside. For three years, Vincent believed he had buried his wife and unborn child… until one crowded gala changed everything.

Anna Bennett Moretti had always believed Vincent would protect her.
He was one of the most powerful men in Chicago, feared, wealthy, and accustomed to controlling every crisis around him. Yet despite everything surrounding his dangerous world, Anna had never doubted one thing: when it truly mattered, her husband would choose her.
Then Sophia Carter joined their vacation.
Sophia was Vincent’s first love, and Anna had never understood why the woman still had such easy access to their marriage. The trip was supposed to be a quiet getaway before Anna gave birth, but when Sophia asked to come along, Vincent agreed without even consulting his wife.
“Vincent, I thought this was supposed to be our vacation,” Anna said.
“It still is.”
“Then why is Sophia here?”
He gave her an impatient look. “Don’t turn this into an argument.”
Anna swallowed the hurt and said nothing.
Hours later, high above the ground, the private jet began shaking violently.
At first, Anna thought it was turbulence. Then another brutal jolt threw her against her seat belt, alarms sounded, and the crew announced that they had to prepare for an emergency evacuation.
Anna immediately placed both hands over her pregnant stomach.
“Vincent?”
He turned toward her.
For one desperate second, she thought he would come to her side.
Then Sophia grabbed his arm.
“Vincent, I’m scared.”
He moved toward Sophia instead.
Anna stared at him in disbelief. “What about me?”
His jaw tightened.
“I’m taking Sophia out first.”
Anna’s face drained of color.
“I’m your wife.”
“I know.”
“I’m carrying your baby.”
“I know that, Anna.”
“Then why are you leaving me here?”
Vincent stepped closer and took her hand. “Because I can get Sophia out quickly and come back for you.”
“What if there isn’t time?”
“There will be.”
He looked directly into her eyes.
“I promise.”
Then Sophia called his name again.
Vincent released Anna’s hand and led Sophia toward the emergency exit.
Anna remained behind, one hand gripping a seat and the other protecting her unborn baby as the aircraft continued trembling around her.
Before disappearing, Vincent turned back.
“Anna! Stay there. I’m coming back!”
She watched him go.
Outside, Vincent barely managed to get Sophia to safety before turning toward the jet again.
Anna was still inside.
He started back.
Then the aircraft exploded.
“ANNA!”
The blast stopped him cold.
Flames swallowed the jet while Vincent stood helplessly watching the woman carrying his child disappear before his eyes.
For three years, he lived with that moment.
He arranged a funeral for Anna and their unborn baby. He remembered her asking whether he would have enough time to return—and remembered promising that he would.
Then, three years later, Vincent attended a crowded gala with Sophia.
A woman crossed the ballroom.
Vincent froze.
Her face.
Her walk.
Everything about her was impossible.
“Anna?”
The woman kept moving.
Vincent tore his arm away from Sophia and pushed through the crowd.
“Anna!”
He was only a few steps away when he reached toward her.
Then a little boy suddenly ran through the ballroom and threw himself toward the woman.
“Mommy!”
May you like
Vincent stopped breathing.
