Chapter 8 - Fifteen Men Vanished

By morning, the story had spread through the criminal underworld.

Fifteen men associated with the Blackthorn crew had been located, detained, or placed under active investigation.

Some were arrested on existing warrants. Others were questioned after evidence connected them to the warehouse assault. Several had disappeared from their usual residences after learning that federal investigators were reviewing the ledger.

That was what people meant when they said fifteen men had vanished.

They had not been killed.

They had vanished from the streets, the bars, and the back rooms where they once believed themselves untouchable.

Declan had not ordered a massacre.

He had ordered the evidence preserved, the witnesses protected, and the people responsible brought into the light.

But the operation uncovered something far more serious than a single assault.

Victor had been using Blackthorn to pressure employees, intimidate witnesses, and conceal the movement of illegal cargo through several shipping companies.

The ledger connected him to the network.

Marcus's testimony connected him to the assault.

And the payment records gave investigators a new lead in Daniel Miller's death.

Then Victor made a mistake.

He contacted Declan directly.

The message arrived shortly after sunrise.

You have made this personal. Return what belongs to the family, and we can end it.

Declan typed a response.

The ledger belongs to the truth.

Victor called immediately.

“You have no idea what you're doing,” he snarled.

“I know exactly what I'm doing.”

“You're destroying your own family.”

“No. I'm refusing to let you use it as a shield.”

Victor laughed bitterly.

“Your father would have understood.”

“My father spent his life trying to stop men like you.”

“He was a fool.”

Declan's eyes turned cold.

“He was a better man than either of us.”

Victor's voice dropped.

“Do you think a few documents will save you? People have died for less.”

“Then you should be careful what you say next. This call is being preserved for investigators.”

There was a long silence.

Then Victor ended the call.

Declan passed the recording to the authorities.

The next operation was conducted by law enforcement, with assistance from witnesses and security personnel who knew the properties involved.

Victor was located at the Connecticut estate and arrested after investigators recovered additional records and communications linking him to the intimidation campaign.

He did not go quietly.

He accused Declan of betrayal, claimed the evidence had been fabricated, and demanded to speak to the family's lawyers.

But the documents were real.

The witnesses were real.

And the fifteen men who had once terrorized the warehouse district were now facing the consequences of their actions.

When Declan returned to the estate, Sadie was waiting in the garden.

“Is it over?” she asked.

“The immediate danger has passed. The legal case will take time.”

She nodded slowly.

“Thank you.”

“You don't owe me anything.”

“I know.”

She looked at her bandaged arm.

“For years, I thought surviving meant keeping my head down and making sure nobody noticed me.”

Declan stood beside her.

“Sometimes surviving means that.”

“And sometimes?”

“Sometimes it means letting people see what happened.”

Sadie looked toward the house, where Jamie was laughing with one of the security guards.

“I think I'm ready for that.”

May you like

Declan nodded.

“Then we'll make sure you're heard.”
