Chapter 1

## THE GHOST FROM THE TRENCHES

"""Too slow, he muttered deliberately sliding his forearm thick as a log to crush my sister's windpipe. Smack, smack, smack. The sound of her hand frantically tapping out on the mat echoed in sheer desperation.\

Instead of letting go, the 220 lb man just smirked. He drove his forehead into the canvas, tightening the vise for four more seconds until my sister's legs stopped thrashing and went completely limp. Not a single one of the 30 people in that San Diego gym dared to look up or intervene.\

My name is Amy, active duty US special forces. Our parents threw us away to chase a new life. And now this garbage system calling itself martial arts is trying to kill my own blood right in front of me.\

They think this is a safe sport. They have no idea what it costs to wake up a ghost from the trenches. If you've ever choked on the injustice of hypocrites tearing you down, stick around.\

Let me show you how I strip their masks and crush their egos. Let me know in the comments where you're listening from. Hit that like button and subscribe if you believe bullies deserve exactly what's coming to them.\

The pressure on Khloe's neck vanished. She didn't roll away to reset. She collapsed.\

Her body folded, curling into a tight ball on the sweaty blue vinyl. Then came the sound. A high-pitched ragged weeze.\

It sounded like a busted truck radiator hissing out steam. Her lungs were frantically clawing for oxygen, fighting against a crushed trachea. Her narrow chest heaved in violent erratic spasms.\

Tears streamed down her flushed cheeks. Not from crying. It was a raw, uncontrollable physiological reaction to being choked completely out of consciousness.\

I stood leaning against the cold cinder block wall. Arms crossed over my plain black t-shirt. I didn't rush over.\

I didn't scream. I just watched. I noted the physical damage with mechanical precision.\

Bright red welts were already blooming across the pale skin of her throat, tracking down toward her collarbone. Give it an hour, the blood pooling under the skin would turn a deep, ugly purple. The stench of industrial floor bleach mixed with stale, sour sweat hung heavy in the stale air of the gym.\

The room was dead silent, save for the agonizing rasp of my 26-year-old sister trying to remember how to breathe. Dererick stood up. He didn't look down with an ounce of concern.\

He didn't ask if she was okay. He took a heavy step back, his thick bare feet squeaking against the mat, and casually adjusted his GI. He took a sweet time retying his secondderee black belt, pulling the knot tight with a sharp, arrogant snap.\

He looked down at Chloe like she was a piece of garbage left on the curb. You got a tap earlier. His voice was loud, projected, meant for the entire room to hear.\

Don't let your ego get in the way. Right. Her ego, a perfectly crafted excuse.\

He wasn't teaching her a lesson. He was getting off on the power trip. a grown man pushing 220, lecturing a girl 40 lb lighter than him while she dry heaved on the floor.\

He was justifying his cruelty, wrapping his assault up in the sacred of gym culture, blaming the victim before she could even catch her breath to speak. 30 guys in this room, 30 pairs of eyes, not a single one looking at her. These were grown men.\

guys in their late 20s, 30s, 40s, software engineers, mechanics, accountants, guys wearing graphic TE's with alpha wolves and aggressive slogans like earn your armor and no excuses. Right now, they were all suddenly very interested in the ceiling tiles or peeling the athletic tape off their knuckles.\

One guy near the heavy bags was aggressively retying the drawstring on his fight shorts for the third time. Someone cleared his throat nervously, the sound loud in the oppressive silence. Nobody stepped forward.\

Nobody tossed a towel. Nobody even offered her a plastic water bottle. They just kept their heads down.\

Protecting their little spots in this toxic ecosystem. They paid their 150 bucks a month to play tough guy. And intervening meant crossing the resident alpha.\

It meant rocking the boat. It was the bystander effect in its purest, most pathetic form. A room full of fake warriors silently co-signing a brutal bullying just by keeping their mouths shut.\

My jaw locked. My heart rate didn't spike. It actually dropped.\

That icy familiar calm washed over me. The same dead quiet that settles deep in your bones when you're looking through a sniper scope in the dust of a Helman outpost. The world slows down.\

The noise cuts out. I peeled my back off the cinder block wall. My scuffed combat boots hit the hardwood floor.\

Thud. I stepped over the red boundary line, separating the spectator area from the mats. I didn't loosen up.\

I didn't stretch my neck.\
