Chapter 8 - THE LAST TEST

Gunfire tore through the safe house.

Zeo pulled Nora behind a stone counter.

Gabriel killed the lights.

Eli’s therapist rushed him into the reinforced basement.

For four minutes, the house became thunder.

Then silence.

Thomas’s men withdrew as quickly as they arrived.

They had not come to win.

They had come to prove they could reach Zeo anywhere.

When dawn arrived, Zeo made a decision.

He would give Thomas the ledger.

Not the copy.

The real one.

Gabriel thought he had lost his mind.

Nora understood.

“You want Thomas to believe he won.”

“Yes.”

“And then?”

“I send the complete files somewhere he cannot stop.”

“Federal prosecutors?”

“Not one.”

Zeo had finally learned.

“One copy goes to federal prosecutors in three districts. Another to two investigative newspapers. Another to attorneys instructed to release everything if I disappear.”

Gabriel whistled.

“Mutually assured destruction.”

“Transparency,” Nora said.

Gabriel looked at her.

“Your version sounds nicer.”

By afternoon, the files were scheduled for release.

Zeo recorded a statement admitting his own crimes.

He did not minimize them.

He did not blame Thomas.

Nora listened from outside the room.

For the first time, Zeo Rossi was surrendering control voluntarily.

That evening, he dressed in a charcoal suit.

Nora saw him adjusting his cuff.

“You look ridiculous.”

He looked down.

“This suit costs twelve thousand dollars.”

“That is why it’s ridiculous.”

He smiled.

“I may be arrested tonight.”

“You probably will.”

“You’re comforting.”

“I clean hospital bathrooms. Emotional counseling costs extra.”

He laughed.

A real laugh.

Nora had never heard it.

It changed his whole face.

Then the laughter faded.

“If I don’t come back—”

“No.”

“Nora.”

“No dramatic goodbye.”

“I need to say this.”

“Then come back and say it.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

“Fine.”

She stepped closer.

“Good.”

Neither moved.

Then Nora kissed him.

It was not elegant.

It was brief and angry and frightened.

When she pulled away, Zeo looked stunned.

“You kissed me.”

“Excellent observational skills.”

“I thought you hated me.”

“I’m reconsidering.”

“Which part?”

“The hate.”

She touched his lapel.

“Come back.”

“I will try.”

“No.”

Her eyes held his.

“Come back.”

Zeo nodded.

“I will.”

The exchange took place at midnight inside Rossi Shipping Terminal 6.

Thomas arrived with twenty men.

Zeo brought Gabriel and nobody else.

Thomas smiled.

“You finally understand.”

Zeo held up the drive.

“You wanted the ledger.”

Thomas extended his hand.

Zeo tossed it.

Thomas caught it.

“You built an empire and destroyed it for a maid.”

“No.”

Zeo looked around the terminal.

“I destroyed it because it deserved to end.”

Thomas laughed.

“You’ve gone soft.”

“Maybe.”

Thomas inserted the drive into a laptop.

The files appeared.

His smile widened.

Then he deleted them.

“Finished.”

Zeo checked his watch.

11:59.

“No,” he said.

“Beginning.”

Midnight.

Phones began vibrating.

Thomas’s men checked their screens.

News alerts.

Federal warrants.

Leaked financial documents.

Thomas stared at Zeo.

“What did you do?”

“Stopped testing everyone else.”

Sirens erupted outside.

Thomas drew his gun.

Gabriel fired first.

Chaos.

Thomas ran toward the docks.

Zeo followed.

They reached the edge of the pier.

Thomas turned and fired.

The bullet missed.

Zeo tackled him.

They crashed against wet concrete.

Thomas punched Zeo’s wounded chest.

Pain blinded him.

Thomas reached for his gun.

Then stopped.

Nora stood ten feet away holding a pistol.

Both men stared.

Zeo’s expression became furious.

“What are you doing here?”

“Apparently making bad decisions.”

Thomas laughed.

“The maid.”

Nora aimed at him.

“Move away from him.”

Thomas stood slowly.

“You won’t shoot.”

“No.”

Her voice remained steady.

“But the twelve federal agents behind you might.”

Thomas turned.

Agents filled the pier.

For the first time, fear entered his face.

He looked at Zeo.

“You gave them everything?”

“Yes.”

“You’ll go down too.”

“Yes.”

Thomas could not understand.

That was his final defeat.

Zeo had chosen something more important than winning.

Agents handcuffed Thomas.

Then they approached Zeo.

Nora’s smile disappeared.

Zeo offered his wrists.

One agent cuffed him.

Nora walked closer.

“You said you’d come back.”

Zeo looked at her.

“I did.”

“This doesn’t count.”

His expression softened.

“No.”

Then he leaned close enough that only she heard.

“Wait for me?”

Nora’s eyes filled.

She shook her head.

Zeo’s face fell.

“I’m not spending years waiting beside a window like some tragic movie heroine.”

He almost smiled.

She continued.

“I’ll live my life.”

“That sounds fair.”

“And when you’re finished paying for yours…”

She touched his handcuffed fingers.

“…find me.”

May you like

Zeo was taken away.

Nora stood beneath the terminal lights until the vehicle disappeared.
