Chapter 6 - THE STORAGE UNITNatalie wanted to go home.

Absolutely not.

“You cannot lock me in a safe apartment because Ryan is insane,” she argued.

“Yes, I can.”

“You're not my mother.”

“No. I'm your pregnant older sister with nothing left to lose.”

Detective Ortiz almost smiled.

Natalie didn't.

The police moved us again.

This time to a farmhouse outside the city belonging to Rebecca's brother.

No public records connected me to it.

No familiar neighbors.

No routine.

For three days, we stayed inside while investigators searched for the pickup truck and processed Vanessa's statement.

Then Brooks called.

The storage unit had been located.

Vanessa had hidden the key inside a safe-deposit box.

Inside the unit were fourteen banker boxes.

Company ledgers.

Contracts.

Burner phones.

Printed emails.

Photographs.

Ryan's family hadn't just been stealing money.

They had been bribing inspectors to approve unsafe construction work.

One project was a public elementary school.

I felt physically sick.

Brooks said federal investigators were joining the case.

Margaret Hale had spent twenty years building a reputation as the woman who donated playgrounds to children.

Meanwhile, she had allegedly profited from shortcuts that could endanger them.

That evening, the power at the farmhouse went out.

Natalie looked at me.

“Storm?”

There was no storm.

Ortiz, who had been assigned to stay with us overnight, immediately moved toward the window.

“Basement. Now.”

We didn't argue.

The farmhouse had a reinforced storm cellar beneath the kitchen.

Natalie helped me down the stairs.

My movements were still careful, and pregnancy had turned every step into work.

Ortiz locked the door above us.

We heard nothing for thirty seconds.

Then glass broke.

Natalie grabbed my hand.

Someone was inside.

Footsteps crossed the kitchen.

Slow.

Searching.

My entire body went cold.

Ortiz stood on the stairs with her weapon ready.

Another crash.

Then silence.

A man's voice called:

“Emma?”

Ryan.

My knees nearly gave out.

Natalie whispered, “How did he find us?”

I didn't know.

Ryan walked through the kitchen above.

“Emma, I know you're here.”

Ortiz silently radioed for backup.

No response.

The power outage had affected the signal booster too.

Ryan continued.

“You're destroying everything.”

I stared at the ceiling.

No.

He was.

He always had been.

“Come upstairs,” he said. “We can talk.”

Natalie mouthed, Don't.

I wasn't going anywhere.

Then another voice.

Margaret.

My blood froze.

“Enough games, Emma.”

She was inside too.

Ortiz whispered, “Two suspects.”

Ryan started moving furniture.

Looking for the cellar entrance.

The door handle rattled.

Locked.

Margaret said, “Break it.”

A heavy impact shook the door.

Natalie pressed both hands over her mouth.

Another impact.

Wood cracked.

Ortiz moved lower on the stairs.

“Police!” she shouted. “Back away from the door!”

Silence.

Then Ryan laughed.

“You brought a cop?”

A window shattered somewhere else in the house.

Ortiz's eyes widened.

A third person.

Footsteps approached from another direction.

This was planned.

The cellar had a second exit through a narrow storm hatch leading behind the barn.

Ortiz pointed.

“Go.”

Natalie helped me through first.

Cold air hit my face.

We moved across wet grass toward the tree line.

Behind us, the cellar door broke open.

Ortiz fired one warning command.

“Stop!”

Then everything exploded into motion.

Ryan shouted.

Margaret screamed.

Someone ran through the farmhouse.

Natalie and I reached the barn.

Headlights suddenly came on.

A dark pickup sat behind it.

The same type police had been searching for.

Its engine started.

“Run!” Natalie screamed.

The pickup accelerated toward us.

I couldn't run fast.

Not pregnant.

Not injured.

Natalie grabbed my arm and pulled me sideways.

The truck tore through the grass, missing us by feet.

It turned.

Coming back.

Then another vehicle slammed into its side.

A sheriff's SUV.

The impact spun the pickup toward the fence.

Deputies poured out.

“Hands! Show me your hands!”

The pickup driver opened the door and ran.

Detective Ortiz came from behind the farmhouse.

She tackled him before he reached the woods.

When officers rolled him over, I recognized him.

Calvin Rusk.

Ryan's private investigator.

Ryan came out of the house with his hands raised.

Margaret followed.

She wasn't screaming anymore.

She looked at me across the yard.

No apology.

No shame.

Only hatred.

“You ruined my family.”

I stared back at her.

“No.”

My voice was steadier than I expected.

“I survived it.”

Deputies placed Ryan in handcuffs.

Then Margaret.

For the first time since I had married into the Hale family, I watched someone else decide where they were allowed to go.

But the night wasn't over.

As paramedics checked me, Detective Brooks arrived holding a phone.

“We found something in Rusk's truck.”

“What?”

“A list.”

He showed me.

Six names.

Marcus Bell.

Vanessa Keene.

Detective Brooks.

Rebecca Shaw.

Natalie Carter.

And me.

Beside my name were two words.

BEFORE TRIAL.
