Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH BENEATH THE ASHES

Luca refused to let me go alone.
This time, I didn't argue.
We coordinated with the investigators and approached the old restaurant shortly before dawn. The building stood behind a row of boarded storefronts, its windows blackened by years of weather and neglect.
The sign above the door had almost completely faded.
Bell Street Kitchen.
My childhood.
My father's first business.
The place where everything had supposedly begun with an electrical fault.
We entered through a side door that hung crookedly from its hinges.
Inside, the air smelled of dust and damp plaster. The kitchen had been stripped of its equipment, leaving empty spaces where the stove and counters once stood.
I remembered the warmth of the ovens, my mother's laughter, my father balancing receipts on the corner of the counter while I did homework at a small table.
Then I saw the burn marks on the rear wall.
They were darker than I remembered.
Luca moved carefully through the room.
“Stay close.”
A light flickered in the basement.
We descended the stairs.
My father sat in a chair near the old storage room, his wrists tied loosely enough that he could move his hands. Vanessa stood beside him. Vincent watched from the doorway, while Adrian Bellini held a folder beneath his arm.
“You came,” Vanessa said.
“I came for my father.”
“Of course you did.”
She glanced at Luca.
“And you brought your favorite witness.”
Luca didn't react.
“Release him.”
Adrian laughed.
“Still giving orders as if this were your restaurant?”
“It was never yours,” Luca replied.
Something darkened in Adrian's expression.
“You have no idea what your father took from my family.”
“I know what he paid you to keep quiet.”
Adrian's smile vanished.
Vanessa looked at him sharply.
“You said the ledger was destroyed.”
“It was supposed to be.”
I stepped forward.
“You mean you tried to destroy it.”
Adrian turned toward me.
“You should have stayed in your kitchen.”
“That's what everyone keeps telling me.”
I looked at Vanessa.
“You blamed Marco because he wouldn't help you steal from Luca. You used my father's identity because you thought his illness made him powerless. And you threatened to kill him because you were afraid of what he'd tell us.”
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
“Your father knew the truth. He made a choice.”
“What choice?”
Adrian stepped between us.
“Enough.”
But my father began struggling against the chair.
He looked at me and spoke with more strength than I'd heard in months.
“Fire.”
I knelt beside him.
“Dad, tell me.”
He drew a shaky breath.
“Not... accident.”
“I know.”
He looked at Luca.
“Dominic... tried.”
Luca crouched beside us.
“Tried what?”
My father closed his eyes.
“To stop... them.”
The words came slowly, but each one landed like a blow.
Eighteen years earlier, Adrian Bellini and Vincent Moretti had been moving money through fraudulent supplier contracts. Dominic discovered the scheme and ordered it stopped. My father, who had handled bookkeeping for one of the companies involved, refused to approve a false transfer.
The fire was set to destroy the original records.
My father escaped with copies, but Dominic helped him disappear from the business and arranged compensation for the damage to the restaurant.
He'd believed the threat was over.
It wasn't.
Adrian had spent years searching for the missing documents.
Vanessa had continued the scheme under the cover of her consulting business.
And Vincent had returned to Chicago to claim what he believed should have been his.
Luca stood slowly.
“You set fire to Emma's family's restaurant?”
Vincent looked away.
Adrian's face tightened.
“We didn't intend for anyone to get hurt.”
My father made a bitter sound.
“You knew... family inside.”
For the first time, Adrian had no answer.
Vanessa moved toward the folder.
“Give me the ledger.”
“No,” I said.
She looked at me.
“You have no idea what you're holding.”
“Neither do you.”
I pulled the black notebook from my bag.
Her face went white.
Luca's eyes widened slightly, but he said nothing.
I'd brought a decoy.
The real ledger had been secured with the investigators, along with the original authorization forms and the evidence recovered from Dominic's property.
Vanessa didn't know that.
She lunged toward me.
Luca caught her wrist before she reached the notebook.
“Don't.”
She twisted free.
“You promised me you'd protect me!”
Luca's expression was cold.
“I promised to marry you. I never promised to protect you from the consequences of your own actions.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“You don't understand. Adrian was going to ruin everything. He said if I helped him recover the money, my family would finally be safe.”
“Your family was never in danger from me,” Luca said. “You created this danger yourself.”
Adrian suddenly grabbed my father by the shoulder and pulled him toward the basement exit.
“Enough talking.”
Vincent moved to block Luca.
For a second, everything happened at once.
Luca shoved Vincent away. I grabbed my father's wheelchair handles. Vanessa screamed at Adrian to stop. Then the basement door burst open.
Police officers flooded the room.
“Hands where we can see them!”
Adrian released my father.
Vincent raised his hands.
Vanessa stood motionless, staring at the officers as if she couldn't understand how the world had turned against her.
My father was free.
I dropped to my knees beside him and held him while the officers secured the room.
Luca stood a few feet away, watching his uncle being handcuffed.
He looked older than he had the night before.
Not weaker.
Just changed.
As the officers led Vanessa toward the stairs, she turned back to me.
“You think you've won?”
I didn't answer.
She smiled through her tears.
“You've only uncovered the first lie.”
Then she was gone.
My father was taken to the hospital for examination. Luca accompanied us, staying in the waiting room while the doctors checked his injuries.
For the first time in days, I could breathe.
Daniel arrived shortly after sunrise with confirmation that the ledger and financial records had been secured. The evidence was strong enough to support charges involving fraud, forgery, and the attempted destruction of records.
But Daniel had discovered something else.
A second transfer had been scheduled for that morning.
One point eight million dollars.
The recipient was an account registered overseas.
And the authorization had not come from Vanessa.
It had come from Dominic Moretti's estate.
Luca stared at the report.
“My father has been dead for twelve years.”
Daniel nodded.
“Which means someone has been using his credentials long after his death.”
I looked toward my father, who was finally sleeping peacefully in his hospital bed.
May you like
The past had caught up with us.
But it wasn't finished.
