Chapter 8 - The TrialThe trial lasted seven weeks.

Harlan cooperated fully.

He handed over evidence against Victor.

He surrendered financial records.

He testified.

For the first time in his life, he stopped hiding behind power.

The newspapers called it the downfall of the Voss empire.

But something unexpected happened.

People who had feared Harlan began seeing something else.

A father.

A man protecting his daughter.

A man willing to sacrifice his fortune rather than protect criminals.

Most of his businesses survived.

Some didn't.

He didn't care.

Belle was healthy.

That was enough.

One afternoon, after the verdict, Harlan came home carrying a paper bag.

“What is that?”

He handed it to me.

Inside was a cheap red scarf.

“I saw it.”

“You bought me a scarf?”

“Yes.”

“You're terrible at gifts.”

“I know.”

I smiled.

Belle ran into the room.

“Daddy!”

He caught her.

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

Then looked at me.

“Rue!”

“Yes?”

“Daddy has something else.”

Harlan frowned.

“What?”

Belle pointed to his pocket.

He sighed.

“You told her?”

“She knows everything.”

I laughed.

Harlan removed a small box.

My heart stopped.

“Rue.”

He opened it.

Inside wasn't a diamond.

It was a simple silver key.

“What is this?”

“The front door.”

I looked at him.

“I don't understand.”

“You have your own apartment.”

“Yes.”

“You have your own job.”

“Yes.”

“You have your own life.”

I nodded.

He smiled.

“But if you ever decide you want to come home…”

He placed the key in my palm.

“You'll always have a place.”

I couldn't speak.

Belle hugged my waist.

“Come home, Rue.”

I looked at Harlan.

Then Belle.

And suddenly I understood.

May you like

Home wasn't a mansion.

It was where someone waited for you.
