Chapter 4 - The Bloodline Nobody Expected

For a moment, Sophia forgot how to breathe.

Dante stared at the photograph.

Vanessa's pistol trembled.

"Ask your mother," Vanessa said. "Ask her why Adriano was visiting Lucia Rossi in secret. Ask her why your father was willing to die rather than reveal what he found."

Elena closed her eyes.

"Vanessa, put the gun down."

"Don't tell me what to do!"

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"My father has spent twenty years protecting this family from the consequences of your lies. He gave Adriano a chance to cooperate. Adriano refused. And now this waitress appears, speaking your dialect, carrying a key to a hidden archive, and suddenly everyone is pretending she's innocent."

"I'm not pretending anything," Sophia said.

Vanessa swung the gun toward her.

Dante moved immediately, putting himself between them.

"Lower it."

"You would choose her over me?"

"I would choose not to have a murder committed in my mother's house."

The coldness in his voice made Vanessa flinch.

For several seconds, she seemed to consider pulling the trigger.

Then Elena stepped forward.

"Your father told you only half the story."

Vanessa's expression changed.

"What?"

"Adriano discovered the agreement between Vincent Genovese and my husband. But he also discovered that Vincent intended to eliminate the Morettis after gaining control of the docks. Adriano tried to stop him."

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Lucia helped Adriano gather evidence. When the men came for him, she escaped with his daughter."

Sophia shook her head.

"No. My grandmother never said—"

"She was protecting you," Elena whispered. "Your mother was Adriano's daughter. You are his granddaughter."

The words seemed to hollow out the room.

Sophia looked at Dante.

He appeared as stunned as she felt.

"Then we're cousins?" she whispered.

Elena shook her head.

"Not by blood. Adriano was Dante's father. Your mother was Adriano's daughter from a relationship before he married into the Moretti family. You and Dante share a grandfather, not a parent."

Dante took a step back.

The attraction that had begun between them was suddenly tangled in a history neither understood.

He looked at Sophia with something close to anguish.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't know!"

The words burst out of her.

"I thought my grandmother was a seamstress. I thought my mother died when I was little. I don't even know what parts of my life are real anymore!"

Her voice broke.

Dante reached for her, then stopped himself.

Vanessa lowered the gun slightly.

For the first time, she looked uncertain rather than furious.

"My father told me Sophia was dangerous," she whispered. "He said she was the last surviving heir to something that belonged to him."

"The docks?" Enzo asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. Something bigger."

She turned toward Elena.

"The ledger is incomplete. The missing page identifies the owner of the offshore account. My father believes that account controls the money used to finance the entire alliance."

Dante's eyes narrowed.

"And he sent you here to retrieve it."

Vanessa didn't answer.

She didn't need to.

Enzo moved toward her, but Dante raised a hand to stop him.

"Why bring the photograph?"

Vanessa looked at Sophia.

"Because my father told me to kill her if she was who he thought she was."

Silence fell.

Sophia stared at the woman who had arrived in a red designer dress and treated her like an insect.

"You were going to kill me?"

Vanessa's face crumpled.

"I thought you were trying to destroy everything."

"By making your future mother-in-law smile?"

"I didn't know what to believe!"

Dante's voice turned deadly.

"You believed your father over me."

Vanessa looked at him.

"You never trusted me enough to tell me the truth about your own family. You kept me outside every door that mattered. What did you expect me to do?"

For a moment, Dante had no answer.

Then Enzo's radio crackled.

"Boss, we found the shooter."

Dante turned.

"Who?"

The reply came after a long pause.

"One of our own men. He's dead. But before he died, he gave us a name."

Enzo looked directly at Dante.

"Marco Bellini."

Dante's oldest adviser.

The man who had helped raise him after Adriano's death.

The man who had been present at every family meeting for twenty years.

Dante's expression became frighteningly calm.

"Bring him to me."

"He's not here, boss."

"Then find him."

Enzo hesitated.

"There's something else. Marco's office is empty. His safe has been opened. And the security footage shows him leaving the estate twelve minutes before the shooting."

Dante turned toward the photograph in Vanessa's hand.

"Where would he go?"

Elena answered before anyone else could.

"To the place where Adriano died."

Sophia looked at the picture of the Sicilian farmhouse.

For the first time, she noticed a small mark on the stone wall behind her grandfather.

A sunburst.

The same symbol engraved on her grandmother's medallion.

And beneath it, almost invisible, was a second mark.

A number.

47.
