Chapter 1 - The Woman Who Turned Her Back on the KingAt 1:12 on a rainy Tuesday morning, every conversation inside the Obsidian Lounge died at once.

Clara Vance noticed.

She just did not care.

Her feet had been inside cheap black flats since noon. Her shoulders ached from carrying trays. Her younger sister Maya needed medication before school, the landlord had taped another notice beside their mailbox, and Clara was fifty dollars short of what she needed by morning.

Whoever had just entered the club could wait.

“He’s here,” Julian whispered behind the bar.

Clara wiped a circle of condensation from the mahogany table.

“Who?”

Julian stared at her.

“Lorenzo Moretti.”

The name was enough to explain the silence.

Lorenzo Moretti was thirty-two, obscenely wealthy, and rumored to own pieces of New York that did not appear on property records.

Politicians attended his dinners.

Judges returned his calls.

Men who mocked everyone else lowered their voices when speaking his name.

Six security men entered first.

Then Lorenzo.

Charcoal suit.

Dark hair.

Cold gray eyes.

He crossed the lounge without looking around because men like Lorenzo did not check whether rooms noticed them.

Rooms always did.

Mr. Henderson, the manager, rushed toward Clara.

“VIP booth.”

“Julian can take it.”

“Julian can barely hold a glass.”

Clara sighed.

She carried sparkling water to Lorenzo’s booth.

He never looked up from his phone.

“Water, sir.”

Lorenzo tapped the empty crystal glass with his gold ring.

Clink.

Clink.

Clara poured.

A bead of condensation ran across the table.

Lorenzo snapped his fingers and pointed at it.

Clara looked at his hand.

Then at the elderly woman sitting beside the booth, struggling to retrieve a dropped fork.

Clara turned her back on Lorenzo Moretti.

The room froze.

She crouched beside the woman.

“I’ve got it. Let me bring you a clean one.”

When Clara returned, Lorenzo’s phone was face down.

He was staring directly at her.

“I gave you an order.”

“They needed help.”

“And I did not?”

“You had a drop of water.”

A bodyguard moved.

Lorenzo lifted one finger.

The man stopped instantly.

Lorenzo stood.

He towered over Clara.

“Do you know who I am?”

Clara checked her watch.

“Yes. Table four. Kitchen closes in twenty minutes.”

Someone near the bar inhaled sharply.

Lorenzo’s eyes narrowed.

Clara added, “If you want food, order now.”

Then she walked away.

For several seconds Lorenzo did nothing.

Finally he sat.

“Silas.”

His security chief leaned closer.

“Boss.”

“Who is she?”

“Clara Vance.”

Lorenzo watched her laugh softly with the elderly couple.

“Find out everything.”

Her shift ended at three.

Cold rain covered the alley behind Obsidian.

Clara pulled her thin cardigan tighter and headed for the subway.

A black Escalade rolled silently into her path.

Two men got out.

“Miss Vance.”

Clara reached into her purse.

“Don’t.”

The first man raised both hands.

“Mr. Moretti would like to speak with you.”

“At three in the morning?”

“Yes.”

“Tell Mr. Moretti I’m off the clock.”

She tried to pass.

The second man blocked her.

Clara’s pulse accelerated.

“Move.”

“Please get in the car.”

“That doesn’t sound optional.”

“It isn’t.”

Clara stared at both men.

Then at the empty alley.

She understood arithmetic.

Two trained men.

One exhausted waitress.

Maya waiting at home.

Clara climbed into the SUV herself.

“But tell your boss something for me.”

The guards exchanged a glance.

“If I miss my sister’s morning medication because of him, billionaire or not, he is going to regret meeting me.”

May you like

The door closed.

And the black SUV carried Clara toward Billionaires’ Row.
