Chapter 9 - What Sophia Left Behind

The photograph destroyed our peace.

If there was another baby, then everything we believed about the bombing could be wrong.

Lorenzo wanted to ignore it.

I couldn't.

We investigated quietly.

The photograph had been taken one week before Sophia's death.

The background revealed an old maternity clinic.

A clinic connected to Dr. Vale.

We returned.

The building had been abandoned for years.

Inside, we found a hidden room.

Boxes.

Medical records.

Photographs.

And one letter.

Sophia had written it.

Dear Lorenzo,

If you're reading this, something happened to me.

I need you to know that Leo is not the only child connected to what happened.

I discovered that Victor planned to use our unborn son as leverage.

But I also discovered something worse.

There was another pregnancy.

Margaret had secretly protected a second child.

A child whose identity was erased because powerful people wanted to use him as a bargaining chip.

The child was alive.

The child was mine.

But not biologically.

My heart raced.

Lorenzo stared at the letter.

“What does that mean?”

We found the answer in the final medical file.

Sophia had been pregnant with twins.

One boy.

One girl.

Leo had been born first.

The second child had been delivered minutes later.

But the second child disappeared.

I stared at the file.

“Where is she?”

Lorenzo shook his head.

“We don't know.”

Then I saw a photograph.

A newborn girl.

Tiny.

Wrapped in a pink blanket.

On the back:

MAYA.

I remembered something.

A little girl.

A woman I had seen at St. Catherine's years earlier.

A foster mother.

A name.

Grace Miller.

We found Grace living in Pennsylvania.

She opened the door and immediately began crying.

“You found us.”

Us.

My heart stopped.

Behind her stood a seventeen-year-old girl.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

And a crescent-shaped birthmark near her left ear.

Lorenzo couldn't speak.

Grace looked at me.

“Her name is Maya.”

The girl stared at Lorenzo.

“Who are you?”

He swallowed.

“Your brother.”

Maya stepped backward.

“No.”

Grace handed us a letter.

“Margaret left it.”

It explained everything.

Maya was Sophia's biological daughter.

Leo's twin sister.

She had been hidden to protect her from Victor.

Margaret had arranged for Grace to raise her.

The second baby hadn't been lost.

She had been saved.

And suddenly, our broken family became something none of us expected.

Bigger.

Messier.

But whole.

Maya came to live with us.

She was suspicious of Lorenzo at first.

I understood.

He had been a stranger to her.

Then one evening, Leo crawled into her lap.

She laughed.

The sound filled the house.

“You're annoying,” she told him.

Leo laughed.

“You like me.”

She kissed his forehead.

“Maybe.”

Lorenzo watched from the doorway.

I slipped my hand into his.

He squeezed it.

For the first time, his family wasn't built on fear.

It was built on truth.

But there was still one unfinished matter.

Elena.

She had survived.

And she had escaped custody.

The police called us at midnight.

“She left the hospital.”

Lorenzo sat upright.

“How?”

“Someone helped her.”

My blood went cold.

“Who?”

The officer hesitated.

“We're still investigating.”

Then the phone line went dead.

Our security alarm sounded.

Lorenzo grabbed his weapon.

I picked up Leo.

Maya appeared at the stairs.

“What happened?”

“Stay upstairs.”

Then we heard Elena's voice through the house speakers.

“You really thought I would disappear?”

Lorenzo looked toward the security cameras.

Every screen went black.

Elena laughed.

“I've spent my whole life watching this family.”

May you like

Then she said:

“And tonight, I'm taking back what belongs to me.”
