THE THREE CRIES OF MIDNIGHT / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - THREE CRADLES AND ONE LAST BATTLE

Richard's arrest triggered chaos.

News networks discovered the Vale scandal.

Financial investigators uncovered decades of fraud.

Several executives were arrested.

Politicians who had once attended charity dinners with Richard suddenly denied knowing him.

The world watched.

But I wasn't interested in the headlines.

I was interested in Claire.

She had nightmares every night.

Sometimes she woke screaming.

Sometimes she checked the nursery three or four times.

I never stopped her.

I went with her.

One night, we stood beside the cribs.

Emma slept peacefully.

Noah had kicked off his blanket.

Grace made a tiny sound.

Claire smiled.

“They don't know any of this happened.”

“They shouldn't.”

She looked at me.

“They'll grow up knowing they're loved.”

I kissed her forehead.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

“Richard escaped custody.”

My heart stopped.

“How?”

“Transport failure.”

“Where is he?”

“We don't know.”

I immediately woke the security team.

Within minutes, the house became a fortress again.

Then the lights went out.

Claire grabbed my arm.

A voice came through the darkness.

“Mason.”

Richard.

I moved Claire behind me.

“Stay away from my family.”

“You think you've won?”

“No.”

I looked toward the nursery.

“I know I have.”

Richard laughed.

“You're still protecting a woman who lied to you.”

Claire froze.

I turned.

“What does he mean?”

Richard continued.

“Ask Claire about the fourth child.”

Silence.

My heart stopped.

“Richard!”

The line went dead.

I looked at Claire.

She was crying.

“Mason…”

“What is he talking about?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't know how to tell you.”

“What?”

She took a breath.

“Before the triplets…”

She stopped.

“I lost a baby.”

My anger disappeared.

She continued.

“I was pregnant before we knew about the triplets.”

The pregnancy ended early.

Claire had been devastated.

She hadn't told me because she was afraid the stress would affect the babies.

Richard had discovered the medical records.

He used the secret to manipulate her.

“He told me if I didn't cooperate, he'd make you believe I had betrayed you.”

I pulled her into my arms.

“Claire.”

“I was scared.”

“I don't care about the secret.”

She cried against my chest.

“I thought I'd lose you.”

“You won't.”

Then we heard glass break.

Someone had entered the house.

Security rushed toward the nursery.

I grabbed Claire's hand.

Richard had one final move.

We found him in the hallway.

He was holding no weapon.

Just a photograph.

An old photograph of himself with Claire's grandmother.

“I loved her,” he said.

Claire stared.

“What?”

“She chose your grandfather.”

His voice cracked.

“I spent forty years believing everything was taken from me.”

Claire stepped forward.

“And you destroyed everyone because you couldn't accept losing.”

Richard looked at her.

“I wanted what was mine.”

“No.”

Claire shook her head.

“You wanted what you believed you deserved.”

He lowered his eyes.

For a moment, he looked old.

Not powerful.

Not frightening.

Just broken.

Federal agents entered.

Richard surrendered.

No gunfight.

No dramatic ending.

Just handcuffs.

As they led him away, he looked back at Claire.

“Your grandmother would have hated me.”

Claire answered softly:

“She would have wanted you to stop.”

The doors closed.

The war was finally over.

I returned to the nursery.

Three cradles.

Three children.

One family.

And Claire beside me.

I realized something.

We had spent months fighting to protect a fortune.

But the fortune wasn't what mattered.

May you like

It was the chance to give our children something neither of our families had ever truly possessed.

Peace.
