Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Raised Her

Eleanor Bennett answered the door wearing the pearl earrings Chloe had given her for her sixtieth birthday.

For one absurd moment, Chloe wanted to pretend everything was normal.

She wanted Eleanor to invite her inside, make tea, and complain about the weather. She wanted the familiar comfort of a woman who had held her hand at her wedding and promised that Harrison would never have to make her feel alone.

Instead, Chloe placed the copied agreement on the hallway table.

"Why is your name on this?"

Eleanor glanced at the document.

The color drained from her face.

"Where did you get that?"

"That's your first question?"

"Chloe, please. Come inside."

"No. Tell me why you witnessed a document saying I agreed to give away my babies."

Eleanor closed the door behind them.

"I thought you understood the arrangement."

Chloe stared at her.

"What arrangement?"

"Harrison said you were helping three women who couldn't have children. He told me you had agreed to carry their embryos."

"Did you ever ask me?"

Eleanor's silence answered.

"He said you were afraid people would judge you," Eleanor continued. "He said you wanted the pregnancy kept private until the babies were born."

"I was six months pregnant before I learned they weren't genetically related to Harrison and me."

Eleanor covered her mouth.

"I didn't know that."

"But you knew I was supposedly giving them away."

"I believed Harrison had explained everything to you."

"You signed a document without speaking to me."

Eleanor sat down heavily.

She admitted that Harrison had brought her a stack of papers months earlier. He had said they were needed to protect the children's future and prevent complications after delivery. He'd assured her Chloe had already consented.

Eleanor had signed as a witness.

She had never seen Chloe sign.

"Why didn't you call me?" Chloe asked.

"Because I trusted my son."

"And I trusted you."

The words landed harder than a scream.

Eleanor began to cry, but Chloe couldn't bring herself to comfort her.

"Did you know about Audrey?"

"No."

"Harper?"

"No."

"Madison?"

Eleanor shook her head.

Chloe wanted to believe her. But wanting something to be true wasn't evidence.

She left the house without accepting Eleanor's offer to help.

That evening, Rebecca received the original document from Madison's attorney. The witness signature was genuine. The supposed signature from Chloe appeared to have been copied from an older medical form.

Rebecca filed an objection to Harrison's petition and requested an investigation into the alleged forgery.

Then she delivered another piece of news.

"There's a second agreement," she said. "It concerns the third embryo."

"Audrey's?"

"Yes. Harrison's filing doesn't identify the intended recipient. It refers to a confidential trust."

Chloe frowned.

"Why would a baby need a trust before birth?"

"That is exactly what we need to discover."

Natalie searched Audrey's estate records while Emily contacted an independent genetic counselor. They learned that Audrey had established a small charitable trust before her death. It was intended to support children who lost a parent to serious illness.

But the account had been inactive for months.

Someone had recently requested access to it.

The request carried Harrison's name.

Chloe sat very still.

He hadn't simply promised Audrey's family a child. He might have been using her death to gain control of something that had nothing to do with motherhood.

At midnight, her phone rang.

It was Eleanor.

"Chloe, I need you to listen carefully," she whispered. "I found something in Harrison's study. A file with your name on it."

"What kind of file?"

"I haven't opened everything. But there's a photograph of you, taken at the hospital, before your first IVF appointment."

Chloe's heart began to race.

"Why would he have that?"

"I don't know. And there's something else."

A door slammed in Eleanor's background.

Her voice dropped.

"He's home."

"Eleanor, leave the room."

"I can't. He's coming upstairs."

The call ended abruptly.

Chloe immediately contacted Rebecca, who told her not to confront Harrison or enter the property alone.

Then a message appeared from Eleanor.

I found a letter addressed to Dr. Vale. It says the first embryo transfer was never supposed to happen.

May you like

A second message followed.

Chloe, I think Harrison chose you before you ever agreed to IVF.
