Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO WALKED AWAY TWICE

Antonio Moretti had been arrested at his office at 7:42 a.m.

The charges included conspiracy, financial fraud, and obstruction of a federal investigation.

Dante watched the news in silence.

Marco stood beside him.

"Your father-in-law has been cooperating with investigators for months."

"Why didn't he tell Isabella?"

"He believed keeping her out of it would protect her."

Dante laughed bitterly.

"Everyone in this family seems to think lying is an act of love."

He picked up his phone.

Isabella answered after the third ring.

"Dante?"

"Your father has been arrested."

"I know."

"He's being transferred downtown. I'll make sure he has legal representation."

"Don't."

"Isabella—"

"I said don't."

Her voice trembled.

"He lied to me. He knew about my mother. He knew about Gabriel. He knew what happened to your mother."

"I know."

"How much of my life was built on lies?"

Dante had no answer.

She continued.

"I'm going to Chicago."

"Let me arrange a car."

"I'll arrange my own."

"Isabella, please."

There was a pause.

Then she said, "I don't need you to save me. I need you to stop making decisions for me."

He closed his eyes.

"All right."

At the courthouse, Isabella stood outside the holding area while her father's attorney completed the necessary paperwork.

Antonio looked older than he had a week earlier.

When he saw his daughter, his eyes filled.

"Sweetheart."

She approached slowly.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

He looked down.

"Your mother made me promise."

"That isn't an answer."

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of losing you."

Isabella shook her head.

"You lost me when you decided I wasn't strong enough to know the truth."

Antonio reached for her hand.

She let him hold it.

But she didn't embrace him.

"Did you know Vittorio was responsible for my mother's death?"

Antonio closed his eyes.

"I suspected."

"Did you know he was going to hurt her?"

"No."

"Did you help hide Gabriel?"

"Yes."

Isabella stepped back.

"Why?"

"Because I believed keeping him hidden was the only way to protect him."

"And what about my mother?"

Antonio's voice broke.

"I failed her."

For a long moment, Isabella looked at the man who had raised her.

Then she said, "I love you, Dad. But I don't know if I can trust you again."

He nodded.

"I understand."

Dante met Isabella outside the courthouse.

He was wearing a dark suit, but there was something different about him.

No security convoy.

No shouting staff.

No commanding voice.

Just a man standing in the cold, waiting.

"How are you?" he asked.

"I'm tired."

"I know."

She looked at him.

"Don't say that unless you mean it."

He nodded.

"You're right."

They walked toward the parking lot together.

Dante stopped beside a black sedan.

"I've spoken to my attorney. I've transferred the money from the apartment Valentina used into a separate account for you. It's yours. No conditions."

"I don't want your money."

"I know. It's not payment. It's something I should have done before we married. You should never have had to depend on me."

Isabella looked at him.

"And the baby?"

His expression softened.

"I want to be a father. But I understand that wanting something doesn't give me the right to demand it."

For the first time, she saw genuine regret in his eyes.

Not panic.

Not wounded pride.

Regret.

She reached into her coat and handed him a folded paper.

He opened it.

It was a new ultrasound.

The baby was growing normally.

A tiny shape was visible on the screen.

Dante stared at it.

"Is this—"

"Your child."

His throat tightened.

"Can I keep it?"

She nodded.

He carefully folded the paper and placed it inside his jacket.

"Thank you."

She looked away.

"Don't make me regret that."

"I won't."

Three weeks later, the family gathered at a private hearing.

Vittorio's financial records had exposed a network of illegal transfers, and Gabriel's testimony had become central to the investigation.

Valentina Greco had disappeared.

Richard Hale was dead.

And the man identified as Samuel Greco had been missing for almost two decades.

But the biggest surprise came when the attorney presented a sealed document from Dante's grandfather.

It was an original inheritance agreement.

The document named Gabriel as the first heir.

Dante was listed second.

But beneath their names was a third entry.

A child whose identity had been deliberately concealed.

The attorney looked at the room.

"According to this document, the Russo family estate was never intended to pass to either brother alone."

Dante stared at the paper.

"Who is the third heir?"

The attorney hesitated.

Then he looked directly at Isabella.

"Your unborn child, Mrs. Russo."

Nobody spoke.

Dante slowly turned toward his wife.

Isabella's hand moved instinctively to her stomach.

And for the first time, she understood why so many people had been willing to destroy her marriage.

The baby wasn't just an heir.

The baby was the key to a secret that could bring down two families.
