Chapter 7 - The Inheritance Nobody Knew Existed

The trust agreement was buried in a storage unit under a false corporate name. Marco obtained the documents through a court-authorized search, and a forensic accountant spent the night reconstructing decades of transfers.

Evelyn Carter had discovered that Vincent was diverting money from legitimate family businesses into accounts used for trafficking and extortion. She had gathered evidence and planned to take it to authorities. Giovanni had promised to protect her, but he had chosen a private solution: hide Evelyn and her daughter separately until Vincent could be stopped.

The plan had failed. Nora had been told her mother died. Evelyn had been moved again and again, while Giovanni assured himself that distance meant safety.

Then Giovanni suffered his stroke. Vincent took control of the trust's administrators and trapped his brother in a mansion where nobody would believe him.

One clause in the original agreement startled Lorenzo. If Evelyn was alive, she retained control of a substantial collection of evidence and restitution funds. If she was dead, the rights passed to Nora. Vincent could not legally claim them, but he could manipulate the trustees by controlling Nora's identity, location, and records.

“That's why Brody came into my life,” Nora said.

They had met at a job fair. He had seemed patient and kind. Months later he persuaded her to sign papers he called a joint rental application. The signatures might have been used to manufacture an authorization over her financial affairs.

Nora felt sick. “He didn't just leave me. He was assigned to me.”

Lorenzo couldn't disprove it. He promised to find out.

The federal prosecutor agreed to open a formal investigation, but warned Lorenzo that his own family's criminal history would not be ignored. Lorenzo handed over the evidence anyway, including records that could implicate his father's organization.

That night, Nora sat beside Giovanni's wheelchair and told him something she had never told another person.

“I used to think if I worked hard enough, people would stop leaving.”

Giovanni selected letters slowly.

I AM SORRY.

She shook her head. “I don't know if I can forgive you yet.”

YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO.

Lorenzo watched from the doorway. He had spent years demanding loyalty through fear. Nora was offering his father the dignity of accountability without promising absolution. He wondered what it would take to become a man worthy of her trust.

Then the estate's emergency alarm sounded.

A security officer rushed in. “The west gate's been breached.”

Marco checked the camera feed. A delivery van was burning across the access road, blocking the only cleared route out.
