Chapter 9 - A Daughter Born in the Storm

Nora went into premature labor at two seventeen in the morning.

The pain came suddenly.

One moment she was speaking with Rachel.

The next, she was gripping the hospital bedrail, unable to breathe through the contraction.

A nurse hurried into the room.

“Nora, look at me. We're going to take care of you.”

Nora shook her head.

“It's too early.”

“I know.”

“She's not ready.”

The nurse squeezed her hand.

“We have a neonatal team here. You're in the right place.”

Nora began crying.

She had imagined Lily's birth a thousand times.

A quiet hospital room.

A tiny pink hat.

Someone holding her hand.

She had never imagined giving birth while police investigated a criminal conspiracy involving the most dangerous family in New York.

Lorenzo was at the hospital when Rachel found him.

“Nora's in labor.”

He stood immediately.

“How is she?”

“Scared.”

“Is the baby okay?”

“They're monitoring her.”

Lorenzo moved toward the maternity wing.

Then stopped.

He looked at Rachel.

“Does she want me there?”

Rachel studied him.

“You should ask her.”

He nodded.

For a man accustomed to giving orders, it was a surprisingly difficult lesson.

Nora was breathing through another contraction when Lorenzo entered.

He stopped beside the door.

“Can I stay?”

She looked at him.

For a moment, she remembered the snow.

The accusations.

The humiliation.

Then she remembered him standing beside her after the rescue.

She nodded.

“Just don't tell me everything will be fine.”

Lorenzo approached.

“I won't.”

She grabbed his hand as another contraction began.

He held on.

For hours, the medical team worked to manage the premature labor and monitor the baby.

But by dawn, delivery could no longer be delayed safely.

Nora was exhausted.

Terrified.

And determined.

“Come on, Lily,” she whispered. “Stay with me.”

At six forty-three, a small cry filled the room.

Nora began sobbing.

The doctor lifted a tiny baby wrapped in a warm blanket.

“She's here.”

Lily was premature and needed immediate neonatal care, but she was breathing.

Nora reached toward her.

“Please.”

The nurse brought Lily close enough for a brief touch before the neonatal team took her for evaluation.

Nora brushed one finger against her daughter's cheek.

“Hi, baby.”

Her voice broke.

“I'm your mommy.”

Lorenzo stood beside the bed.

He had witnessed violence, betrayal, and death.

But nothing had ever affected him like the sight of that tiny child fighting to breathe.

Nora looked up at him.

“She's beautiful.”

Lorenzo nodded.

“She is.”

Then he stepped back so Rachel could take his place beside her sister.

While Nora recovered, the investigation reached its final stage.

Mrs. Gable had been arrested.

Financial records linked her to Matteo's companies.

The recovered audio established that she had participated in the scheme to conceal Giovanni's recovery.

Investigators also found evidence that she had arranged unauthorized medication administration and manipulated household reports.

Isabella was questioned for hours.

She admitted knowing that Matteo was alive.

She admitted helping him gain access to financial documents.

But she insisted she hadn't known he intended to harm Giovanni or Nora.

The authorities would determine the extent of her responsibility.

Lorenzo ended their engagement.

There was no dramatic confrontation.

No screaming.

No broken glass.

He simply placed the ring on the table between them.

“I trusted you.”

Isabella looked at it.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe.”

He stood.

“But you chose to lie.”

She began crying.

“Lorenzo, please.”

He shook his head.

“Goodbye, Isabella.”

Three days later, Giovanni met Lily.

Evelyn wheeled him into the neonatal unit after the medical team approved the visit.

Nora sat beside the incubator.

Lorenzo stood nearby.

Giovanni looked at the tiny baby.

His eyes filled with tears.

The communication device clicked.

LILY.

Nora smiled.

“Yes.”

Giovanni selected another message.

BEAUTIFUL.

Nora wiped her cheeks.

“She is.”

Lorenzo knelt beside his father.

“Dad, she's going to be okay.”

Giovanni looked at him.

Then at Nora.

The device spoke.

PROTECT THEM.

Lorenzo nodded.

“I will.”

Nora looked at him.

“Lorenzo.”

He turned.

She spoke gently.

“I don't need another man making promises he can't keep.”

He accepted the words.

“Then I won't ask you to believe a promise.”

She studied him.

“What will you do?”

He looked toward Lily.

“Whatever I can to make sure you both have the freedom to choose your own future.”

Nora said nothing.

But something in her expression softened.

That evening, Marcus entered Lorenzo's office carrying a sealed folder.

“The final records from Nora's mother's Bible have been decoded.”

Lorenzo looked up.

“And?”

Marcus placed the folder on the desk.

“There's something you need to see.”

Inside was a birth certificate.

Then a second.

Two infants born on the same day.

Nora Bennett.

And Elena Romano.

Lorenzo frowned.

“I thought Elena was Matteo's daughter.”

Marcus nodded.

“That's what he believed.”

Lorenzo looked at the documents again.

“Believed?”

Marcus turned to the final page.

A genetic analysis commissioned years earlier.

It showed that Elena and Nora were not twins.

They were unrelated infants whose records had been deliberately switched.

Lorenzo stared at the page.

“Then who is Nora?”

Marcus swallowed.

“That's the problem.”

He pointed to the original hospital identification record.

Nora's biological mother's name had been removed.

But her father's name remained.

Lorenzo read it.

Then stood so abruptly that his chair fell backward.

May you like

Because the name printed on the document was one he knew better than his own.

GIOVANNI MORETTI.
