Chapter 5 - The Man Who Left Her

Brody Hale appeared at the gates two days before Christmas.
Nora had not seen him in seven months.
He looked almost exactly as she remembered.
Expensive smile.
Carefully messy brown hair.
A face that made strangers trust him faster than they should.
Nora stood behind Dante in the entrance hall as security brought Brody inside.
Brody smiled when he saw her stomach.
“Wow.”
Nora's heart hardened.
“That is what you have to say?”
“I've been looking everywhere for you.”
“You had my phone number.”
“I made mistakes.”
“You committed fraud.”
Brody glanced at Dante.
“This is between us.”
“No,” Dante said. “You brought it into my house.”
Brody's smile vanished.
He claimed the debts had been a misunderstanding.
He claimed he had disappeared because his father threatened him.
Then he delivered the sentence designed to frighten Nora.
“My father knows about the baby.”
Nora instinctively touched her stomach.
Dante stepped between them.
“Leave.”
Brody stared at him.
“You don't know what you're protecting.”
“I know exactly what I'm protecting.”
The words affected Nora more than she wanted them to.
Brody noticed.
His expression twisted.
“You think he cares about you?”
“Enough.”
Dante's voice was almost conversational.
“Which is already more than you managed.”
Security removed Brody.
But before leaving, he looked directly at Nora.
“Ask your old friend why he really stopped talking.”
That night, John suffered a seizure.
Nora found him.
His body jerked violently in the wheelchair.
She screamed for help.
Dante arrived first.
An ambulance was called, but the estate physician insisted moving John would be dangerous.
Dante refused to trust him.
He summoned a neurologist from Manhattan by helicopter.
Dr. Amelia Warren examined John for nearly two hours.
Then she requested his medications.
Her conclusion changed everything.
“These dosages make no medical sense.”
Dante's expression went cold.
“Could they impair speech?”
“Absolutely.”
“Movement?”
“Yes.”
“Cognition?”
“They could make an alert patient appear significantly less responsive.”
Nora covered her mouth.
Five years.
Someone had been chemically imprisoning John inside his own body.
The doctor gradually reversed his medication under supervision.
Within forty-eight hours, John's improvement was unmistakable.
His hands moved more.
His eyes stayed open longer.
Then, Christmas morning, Nora entered his room carrying tea.
John looked at her.
His lips moved.
“N...”
Nora froze.
He tried again.
“Nora.”
The cup slipped from her hand.
It shattered.
John Moretti smiled.
Nora began crying.
“You said my name.”
He breathed carefully.
“Too... loud.”
She laughed through tears.
Dante appeared in the doorway.
“What happened?”
Nora turned.
“He spoke.”
Dante stopped.
For a moment, the feared head of the Moretti family looked like a little boy.
He walked toward his grandfather.
“Nonno?”
John looked at him.
His voice was barely more than breath.
“Dante.”
Dante sank to his knees.
John touched his grandson's face.
“You... came... home.”
Dante closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
John's fingers rested against his cheek.
“Late.”
One word.
It broke him.
Dante bowed his head against his grandfather's hand.
Nora quietly left them together.
But downstairs, Mrs. Gable was packing a suitcase.
Marco caught her at the servants' exit.
Inside her bag were forty thousand dollars in cash, a passport and three bottles of John's medication.
Dante questioned her himself.
For hours, she denied everything.
Then Marco placed photographs on the table.
Mrs. Gable meeting Victor Hale.
Bank transfers.
Deleted security logs.
Her composure cracked.
“I never hurt him.”
“You drugged him for five years.”
“I followed instructions.”
“Whose?”
She swallowed.
“Victor Hale.”
“Why?”
Her eyes moved toward John.
“Because your grandfather saw who tampered with Alessandro's car.”
Dante became completely still.
“He saw my father's murderer?”
Mrs. Gable nodded.
“And Victor knew that if John Moretti ever spoke again, everything would end.”
From the doorway came a weak voice.
“Not... everything.”
Everyone turned.
John sat in his wheelchair.
He looked directly at Dante.
“Your father... was betrayed.”
Dante approached him.
“By Victor?”
John shook his head.
May you like
Then he said something none of them expected.
“By... family.”
