Chapter 9 - THE NAME ON THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE

The old chapel stood on a wooded property that had belonged to the Moretti family for generations.
Alessandro had not visited it since his mother's funeral.
He remembered the white stone walls, the narrow windows, and the oak pew where his father had sat with his head bowed while relatives offered condolences. He remembered Vivienne holding his shoulder and telling him that grief was a burden he would have to carry privately.
Now he wondered whether she had been comforting him or keeping him quiet.
At eleven forty-five, Alessandro, Meline, Laura, and a small security team approached the chapel.
Nobody had agreed to the instruction to bring Meline alone.
Nobody intended to obey the rest of the message either.
They entered through the side door.
A single candle burned near the altar.
Beside it stood an elderly woman in a dark coat.
Alessandro stopped.
The woman turned.
Her face had aged, but he recognized her instantly.
"Mother?"
Elena Moretti began to cry.
For several seconds, Alessandro could not move. Then he crossed the chapel and pulled her into his arms.
She held him tightly, her hands trembling against his back.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
He pulled away just enough to look at her.
"You're alive."
"Yes."
"Why didn't you come home?"
Elena looked toward the chapel doors.
"Because I believed I was protecting you."
Alessandro's expression hardened.
"Everyone says that. Everyone uses those words to justify abandoning the people they claim to love."
The accusation made her flinch.
"You have every right to hate me."
"I don't know what I feel."
"Then listen before you decide."
Elena explained that the accident had been arranged by people inside the Moretti organization. She had survived, but the injuries to her face and spine required months of treatment. While she recovered, she discovered evidence that Vivienne and several senior associates were diverting money from the family businesses.
Worse, they were using those funds to finance a private network that controlled judges, police officers, and medical officials.
Elena had tried to expose them.
Instead, she was told that Alessandro would be killed if she returned.
She went into hiding.
"I thought I could gather enough evidence to destroy the network," she said. "I thought your father would understand when the time came."
"And did he?"
"He never knew I was alive."
Alessandro looked away.
Twenty years of grief could not be repaired by a single explanation.
Meline stood beside Laura, listening as two families' secrets converged in the chapel.
"Who is my father?" she asked.
Elena turned toward her.
"His name was Daniel Cross."
Meline felt the name settle into her mind.
Laura reached into her bag and removed a folded document.
"Daniel worked as an accountant for the Moretti shipping companies. He discovered that the family was being used to move money through legitimate businesses. He fell in love with Isabella, and they planned to leave Chicago together."
"Why didn't he come for me?" Meline asked.
"Because he was killed three months before you were born."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"He was murdered after he tried to expose the network. The official report called it a robbery. But he had no money on him, and his briefcase disappeared."
Alessandro clenched his fists.
"Who killed him?"
"We never found out," Elena said. "But Daniel's records were the reason Isabella wanted to leave."
Meline looked down at the document.
It was a copy of a birth certificate.
Her original name was not Meline Pierce.
It was Anna Isabella Cross.
The room seemed to narrow around her.
"Why did Grandpa call me Meline?"
"Because Samuel believed the people hunting Daniel's family would never look for a girl under another name," Laura replied. "He chose Meline because it was your middle name, the one Isabella had written in her diary. He wanted you to keep a piece of her without giving away who you were."
Meline closed her eyes.
All her life, she had believed she was an ordinary girl raised by a stubborn old man who loved her too much to explain his silences.
Now she knew that her life had been built around a desperate act of protection.
But one question remained.
"Why is someone still trying to kill me?"
Elena answered.
"Because Daniel left behind evidence that could expose the network. The original records were hidden somewhere only Isabella knew about. When she died, the people responsible believed the secret had died with her."
"And now?"
"Now they know you're alive."
A sound came from outside.
The security chief rushed through the chapel door.
"Mr. Moretti, we have a problem. Two vehicles have entered the property. They're not ours."
Alessandro reached for his phone.
Before he could issue an order, the chapel lights went out.
A gunshot rang through the darkness.
Meline felt someone grab her arm.
"Run!" Laura shouted.
They moved toward the side exit, but a figure blocked the doorway. Alessandro struck him hard enough to send him crashing into a pew. Another man rushed forward.
The chapel erupted into chaos.
When the lights returned, the intruders had fled.
One of Alessandro's guards lay injured near the altar, and the elderly woman who had delivered the message was gone.
So was Elena.
Alessandro ran outside, calling his mother's name.
Meline found a small envelope beneath the candle.
Inside was a photograph of Daniel Cross standing beside a young man.
The young man had Alessandro's eyes.
On the back, someone had written:
DANIEL DID NOT DIE THAT NIGHT.
Meline stared at the words.
Then she looked at Alessandro.
"If Daniel was alive, where has he been for twenty years?"
Alessandro took the photograph from her.
For the first time in his life, the feared head of the Moretti family looked completely lost.
"I don't know."
His phone rang.
The caller ID displayed a number that had been disconnected for twenty years.
He answered.
A man's voice spoke through the static.
"Alessandro, if you want to know what really happened to Isabella, stop looking for your enemies."
May you like
A pause.
"Start looking at your father."
