Chapter 15 - Rosa Falcone Walked In FirstAt 11:58 p.m., Rosa entered Terminal Nine carrying the ledger.

Dante walked three steps behind her.

He hated every one of them.

Not because he believed Rosa weak.

That illusion had died a long time ago.

He hated it because loving someone made distance unbearable when danger was near.

Rosa stopped in the center of the warehouse.

“Elias!”

Lights came on.

Daniel sat tied to a chair near the loading dock.

Blood marked his temple.

He was conscious.

“Rosa, leave.”

“Very touching,” Elias Voss said.

He emerged from behind a shipping container.

He looked exactly as he had outside Sophia’s school.

Ordinary.

That was the frightening part.

Six armed men surrounded him.

Elias smiled at Dante.

“You look like Antonio.”

“I’m told I improved.”

“Your father would be disappointed.”

“He usually was.”

Elias looked at Rosa.

“And you look nothing like Thomas.”

“Good.”

“Your father was weak.”

Rosa’s fingers tightened around the ledger.

“My father was brave enough to leave you.”

“Is that what Carmela taught you from beyond the grave?”

“No.”

Rosa looked at Dante.

“My husband did.”

Something moved in Dante’s expression.

Voss noticed.

“So this is real.”

“What?”

“The maid.”

Rosa’s jaw tightened.

Voss smiled.

“Victor told me Dante was becoming attached to some large maid and her child. I thought grief had finally made him stupid.”

Dante’s voice became dangerously soft.

“Choose your next words carefully.”

Rosa touched his arm.

“No.”

She looked at Voss.

“Let him talk.”

Voss smiled wider.

“Doesn’t it bother you?”

“What?”

“That men like him spend their lives surrounded by women who look nothing like you?”

Rosa stared at him.

A year earlier, the words would have cut.

Years earlier, they would have destroyed her.

Tonight she almost felt sorry for him.

“You dragged me into a warehouse at midnight and kidnapped my daughter’s father.”

She held up the ledger.

“And that is the best weapon you have?”

Voss’s smile disappeared.

Rosa stepped forward.

“I spent most of my life believing men got to tell me what I was worth.”

Another step.

“Too big.”

Another.

“Too poor.”

Another.

“Too ordinary.”

She stopped ten feet from him.

“Then a three-year-old walked into the most frightening house in New York and taught everyone there that fear is mostly adults pretending.”

Dante almost smiled.

Rosa tossed the ledger onto the floor.

“So no, Elias.”

Her voice hardened.

“You don’t get to make me small.”

Voss drew a gun.

Dante moved.

Rosa shouted:

“NOW!”

The warehouse exploded into motion.

Federal agents entered through both loading doors.

Daniel had been cooperating with prosecutors for more than a year.

Before coming to the terminal, Rosa had insisted they contact his federal handler.

Dante’s security team came from the opposite side.

Voss grabbed Rosa.

The gun pressed against her ribs.

Dante stopped.

Everything inside him became murder.

Voss dragged Rosa backward.

“You think law saves people like you?”

Rosa looked at Dante.

He understood her expression too late.

She drove her heel down on Voss’s foot and threw her weight backward.

The gun shifted.

Dante crossed the distance.

One strike.

Voss fell.

The weapon skidded away.

Dante hit him again.

And again.

Voss laughed through blood.

“There he is.”

Dante froze.

Voss smiled.

“Antonio’s son.”

Dante looked down at his fist.

Then at Rosa.

She did not tell him to stop.

She did not need to.

Dante stepped backward.

Federal agents pulled Voss up and handcuffed him.

Rosa untied Daniel.

He winced.

“You took your time.”

She slapped his shoulder.

He groaned.

“I was kidnapped.”

“And somehow you’re still annoying.”

Dante approached.

Daniel looked at him.

“You okay?”

Dante glanced toward Voss.

“Yes.”

It was true.

For perhaps the first time, walking away from violence did not feel like weakness.

It felt like choice.

Then one of the federal agents opened the ledger.

His face changed.

“Mr. Falcone.”

Dante turned.

“There’s a problem.”

“What?”

The agent held up a page.

A recent entry had been written in different ink.

A payment.

Two hundred thousand dollars.

Recipient:

MARINA COSTA.

Dante stared.

Rosa stopped breathing.

Daniel whispered:

“No.”

The payment date was six days earlier.

May you like

Marina had received money from Elias Voss.

And she had not told anyone.
