Chapter 7 - The Mother Behind the War

Beatrice Falcone did not run when Dante confronted her.
She poured tea.
That frightened Rosa more than denial would have.
Beatrice admitted financing surveillance.
She admitted employing Greco.
She admitted arranging Carmela’s route.
But she claimed she had never ordered Carmela killed.
She had intended to frighten her into surrendering the Pier 19 evidence.
Greco changed the plan.
Dante did not excuse her.
Neither did Matteo.
For decades Beatrice had manipulated the Falcone brothers by telling each that violence was necessary to protect the other.
Carmela had discovered the truth.
Pier 19 contained proof that Beatrice and Greco had engineered a war between two families, profiting from properties abandoned during the conflict.
Carmela intended to expose them.
That was why Sophia inherited the land.
A child outside the Falcone bloodline could not be pressured by family succession rules.
Rosa finally understood Carmela’s choice.
She had not chosen Sophia because Sophia was special.
She had chosen her because Rosa had once walked away from an abusive man with nothing.
Carmela trusted Rosa to walk away from forty million dollars too if keeping it endangered her child.
And Rosa did exactly that.
She announced the property would be transferred into a public charitable trust once the evidence was secured.
Beatrice had no leverage left.
But Greco did.
He kidnapped Eric Bennett.
Then sent Rosa a message:
Come alone, or Sophia learns what her father sounds like when he dies.
Rosa went.
Not because she loved Eric.
She did not.
She went because she refused to let Sophia inherit a murder.
What Greco did not know was that Rosa had learned from Dante.
She left clues.
Purple crayon marks.
One at the gate.
One beneath a bench.
One on a warehouse wall.

Dante followed them.
For once, the childish game that had started in a hallway became a trail through the darkness.
