Chapter 9 - The Last Dinner at Calder Estate

For eighteen hours, nobody could tell Lena whether Vincent Calder was alive.

She sat inside a secure apartment overlooking the Hudson River, holding her phone until the battery died.

Sophie slept on the couch.

Marcus's men guarded every entrance.

The television reported a fire at a private estate in Bellweather County.

Authorities had confirmed multiple injuries.

No names were released.

Lena watched the footage without blinking.

Smoke.

Flames.

Fire trucks.

The mansion where she had spent three years working was almost unrecognizable.

She remembered Vincent standing in the kitchen.

His sleeves rolled up.

His disastrous omelet.

His quiet laughter.

The way he had asked permission before kissing her.

Then she remembered his final message.

I love you.

She pressed the phone against her chest.

“Please,” she whispered.

“Please be alive.”

At 11:43 a.m., the apartment door opened.

Marcus entered.

His jacket was torn.

There was dried blood near his collar.

Lena stood.

“Where is he?”

Marcus didn't answer immediately.

Her heart stopped.

“Marcus.”

“He's alive.”

The words nearly brought her to her knees.

“Where?”

“An emergency medical facility. He was injured during the fire.”

“How badly?”

“Smoke inhalation. A broken rib. A gunshot wound to the shoulder.”

Lena closed her eyes.

Alive.

He was alive.

“I need to see him.”

Marcus nodded.

“There's something else.”

Lena opened her eyes.

“What?”

“Nathan escaped.”

The relief vanished.

Marcus continued.

“He has people inside the estate's security network. He also has access to several offshore accounts.”

“Then he'll run.”

“Maybe.”

Lena shook her head.

“No.”

Marcus frowned.

“What?”

“He won't run.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Nathan doesn't just want money.”

She thought of the years of resentment.

The jealousy.

The way Nathan had looked at Vincent.

“He wants to win.”

Marcus considered that.

Then he nodded.

“You're right.”

That afternoon, Lena visited Vincent at the medical facility.

He lay in a private room, his shoulder bandaged.

His face was bruised.

But when he saw her, he smiled.

“Hello, chef.”

Lena burst into tears.

Then she marched to his bedside.

“You absolute idiot.”

Vincent blinked.

“I was hoping for something more romantic.”

“You sent me a message saying you loved me and then disappeared into a burning building!”

He winced.

“Technically, I was already in the building.”

“Vincent!”

He reached for her hand.

“Come here.”

She leaned down.

He kissed her.

Slowly.

Tenderly.

When she pulled back, his eyes were shining.

“I meant it,” he said.

“What?”

“The message.”

Lena's throat tightened.

Vincent brushed his thumb across her fingers.

“I love you, Lena Brooks. Or Elena Marlowe. Whatever name you choose.”

She laughed through her tears.

“I don't know who I am anymore.”

“I do.”

She looked at him.

“Who?”

“The woman who saved my life. The woman who makes the world's best omelet. The woman who refuses to let me buy her clothes without permission.”

She smiled.

“And?”

Vincent's expression softened.

“The woman I want beside me when all this is over.”

Lena leaned closer.

“I love you too.”

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Vincent whispered, “We need to finish this.”

Lena nodded.

“I know.”

The plan began that evening.

Marcus contacted federal investigators already examining Blackthorn Research's financial records.

The audio recording, laboratory documents, and offshore transfers provided grounds for a broader criminal investigation.

Vincent agreed to cooperate.

He also made a decision that shocked his attorney.

He would surrender control of every illegal operation connected to the Calder organization.

The legitimate companies would undergo independent audits.

Any assets tied to criminal activity would be disclosed.

Lena listened quietly.

“Are you sure?”

Vincent looked at her.

“I can't promise you a future while protecting the things that destroyed our families.”

She squeezed his hand.

For the first time, she believed their happiness might be possible.

But Nathan still had to be caught.

Marcus arranged a controlled meeting at the damaged Calder Estate.

Nathan received a message claiming Vincent had died from his injuries.

A second message informed him that the remaining Blackthorn evidence was hidden inside the dining room safe.

The bait worked.

At 9:17 p.m., Nathan arrived.

He entered through the service entrance with two armed associates.

The dining room was dark.

The chandeliers had been removed after the fire.

The long marble table remained.

And at its head sat Vincent Calder.

Alive.

Nathan stopped.

For the first time in his life, he looked genuinely afraid.

Vincent rose slowly.

“Hello, brother.”

Nathan reached for his gun.

“Don't,” Vincent said.

Nathan froze.

“It's over.”

Nathan laughed nervously.

“You think you can prove anything?”

Vincent placed a small recording device on the table.

“Your confession at the estate was captured by my security system before the fire destroyed the cameras.”

Nathan's face drained.

“And the Blackthorn records?” Vincent continued. “Federal investigators have them.”

Nathan looked toward the doors.

“Where are your guards?”

Vincent didn't answer.

Instead, Lena stepped from the adjoining room.

Nathan stared.

“You.”

She walked toward the table.

“Yes. Me.”

His mouth twisted.

“All of this because of a cook.”

Lena stopped opposite him.

“No. All of this because you believed a cook wasn't worth noticing.”

Nathan's expression hardened.

“You think you're better than me?”

“No.”

She looked at Vincent.

“Just different.”

Nathan suddenly lunged toward her.

Vincent moved between them.

A gunshot exploded.

Lena screamed.

Vincent staggered.

Then Nathan collapsed to the floor as armed federal agents entered from both sides of the room.

The shot had struck Vincent's protective vest.

He remained standing.

Nathan was disarmed and handcuffed.

For several seconds, Lena couldn't move.

Then Vincent turned toward her.

“I'm okay.”

She ran into his arms.

He held her tightly.

Behind them, Nathan shouted accusations as investigators led him away.

But Vincent no longer listened.

The man who had controlled his life through guilt and loyalty was finally gone.

And when Lena lifted her head, Vincent kissed her forehead.

“It's finished,” he whispered.

She wanted to believe him.

Then an investigator approached carrying a sealed envelope.

“Miss Brooks?”

Lena turned.

“We recovered something from Nathan's private safe.”

He handed her the envelope.

Inside was a birth certificate.

Her original birth certificate.

And beneath it was a handwritten letter from Rebecca Marlowe.

Lena's hands trembled as she unfolded it.

The first line made her stop breathing.
