Chapter 9

The Mount Sinai Grand Auditorium was packed to capacity.
Dozens of medical journalists, international delegates, and corporate board members sat under the dazzling stage lights. At the podium stood Dr. Martinez, tailored, polished, and smiling charismatically for the television cameras broadcasting the event live to medical networks nationwide.
"...and so, with the acquisition by Vance Pharmaceuticals finalized this morning, Neurox-7 will usher in a new era of brain trauma recovery," Martinez proclaimed, his voice echoing through the auditorium speakers.
From the technical control booth above the auditorium, I watched through the double-paned soundproof glass.
Julian stood behind the terrified AV technician, holding his phone connected to the master broadcast console via the black flash drive.
"Upload complete," Julian said calmly into the technician's ear. "Switch the feed on three."
"Who authorized this?" the tech stammered.
"The Board of Directors," Julian said. "Hit the switch."
On stage, Martinez raised a hand for applause.
Behind him, the massive eighty-foot projector screen flickered. The PowerPoint presentation vanished, replaced instantly by high-resolution scans of suppressed coroner reports, falsified trial logs, and encrypted bank transfers bearing Martinez’s personal signature.
A collective gasp swept through the two hundred attendees.
Martinez froze, the smile dying on his face. He turned toward the screen, his complexion draining to ash.
Then the auditorium audio system boomed with an audio recording—Martinez’s own voice, captured by Sophia’s hidden wire:
*“If Sullivan’s sister doesn't survive the night, write it off as trauma complications. The merger cannot be stalled by a paralegal with a conscience.”*
Chaos erupted. Reporters leaped from their seats, flashes strobing like lightning, shouting questions over the din.
Martinez backed away from the podium, his eyes darting frantically toward the backstage exit.
The backstage doors flew open.
Four FBI tactical agents, flanked by the hospital's internal security director, marched onto the stage, weapons drawn.
"Edward Martinez, you are under arrest for corporate conspiracy, attempted murder, and evidence tampering," the lead agent announced over the microphone.
I watched through the control booth window as handcuffs clicked around Martinez's wrists, pinning him in front of twenty rolling news cameras.
Julian stepped up behind me, placing a hand on my shoulder. His touch was firm, steady, grounding.
"It's over, Mia," he murmured. "They have Marcus in custody in Midtown, too. The company's assets are frozen. You saved Sophia. You saved hundreds of patients."
Tears blurred my vision, but for the first time in twenty-four hours, they weren't tears of terror.
I turned around, buried my face into his chest, and let out the breath I had been holding since that sidewalk on 5th Avenue.

He wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight while the storm finally passed below us.
