Chapter 1 - The Name Between His Fingers

Exactly three minutes and forty-seven seconds after her emergency call, we burst into the office.
The smell of blood hit me first. Then I saw Vincent slumped in his chair, his face almost gray, while Adeline sat beside him with tears streaming down her cheeks.
“I talked to him,” she whispered when she saw me. “But Uncle Vin stopped talking back.”
Dr. Morales rushed forward and pressed two fingers against Vincent's neck. Her expression changed instantly.
“Marcus, clear this room! NOW!”
I scooped Adeline into my arms, but something caught my attention as the doctor lifted Vincent's blood-soaked hand.
A small folded piece of paper slipped from between his fingers.
I picked it up and unfolded it with trembling hands. There was only one name written inside, in handwriting I recognized immediately.
The doctor glanced over my shoulder and went pale.
“Marcus, clear this room! NOW!”
The name belonged to someone who had eaten dinner with Vincent the night before.
Someone he trusted with his life.
Suddenly, the unlocked office door made terrible sense. Whoever had attacked Vincent hadn't needed to force their way inside.
And as Adeline buried her face against my shoulder, I realized something even more frightening.
She might have seen exactly who did it.
